Here’s a bit of progress on this one. Remember what it looked like before? Well, here it is now. It’s not a big change, but what with the holidays and feeling as if I’d rather hide in a dungeon than open my eyes most days lately, I figure any progress is good.

Hope you’re all enjoying your days more than a sharp stick in the eye and fingers crossed for a positive start to this next year!

Oozing WIP Update: Round 2

This week, I started painting on it. There will be much, much more paint before it’s finished. It will likely end up with little resemblance to what you see here. But I thought it might be fun to share progress shots of this one along the way. You can see a photo of it at an earlier stage after the jump.

Think bonbons. Think icing. Think sugar. Think of that awful sick feeling you get when you eat too much, because that’s what I’m thinking while making these. Provided all things fall into place in such a way that I end up satisfied with the end result, these will be displayed in a group show in December at The Northampton Center For The Arts. The show is a yearly invitational exhibit curated by the lovely and talented Jane Lund. This year’s theme is “desserts.” I threw around the idea of a more literal approach since I do actually enjoy switching gears to representational painting every now and then. But in the end, I decided that since the work I’m currently making already fits the bill in a slightly off-beat way that I should just roll with it. Might as well appreciate serendipity when it lands in your lap like a warm cat on a cold night, right?

Three more images and a link to more after the jump.

Slow Rowing & No [n] Sense
Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags Art, help! something is melting, ice cream, loose associations, sculpture, smashing pumpkins, steph gerolimatos, stephg, wip on September 24, 2011 by ssstephg
Here’s another closeup shot of a work in progress. It looks like ice cream, doesn’t it? Well, it ain’t so don’t eat it. God I’m tired! And I have very little to say. And I am in need of a shower. And I apologize to you as well as to myself for beginning these sentences with the word and. It’s just not proper.
Let’s see if this post is salvageable. We could spend some time talking about the relevance of the ice cream resemblance. OK. Well, I’ve spent a good long time looking at images of food to fuel my brain for this series. What else can I say about that? Oh, things and stuff I’m sure, but what’s the point really? The point is just one of many that I have no energy to make.
And so, (there I go again with the and) I will, instead, leave you with a favorite old video of mine. Who wants to steal an ice cream truck and drive off into the desert with me to make out? I have buckets of paint and if you’re half as cute as James Iha in a dress I’ll let you play with my gun.

Your Spleen Is Vacationing In My Studio, See Look!

Oh to be prolific in an orderly way, as in, to begin and complete specific things within a foreseeable time frame–what I wouldn’t give for that! OK well, as nice as that would be (and when that is my goal I am even capable of doing it), sometimes it’s just nicer to dive in and jump around in the mess without caring so much about presentable finished pieces. And that is precisely what I am in the midst of doing these days. Thus the sporadic bits and pieces views I continue to share here and there, on and off. Today, I give you more bits.
The first image off to the left there is of a sculpture in progress that I have since continued working. It may or may not be done now, decision pending. The photo below here is a closeup shot of another sculpture. This one is finished. I will also include a complete view of it after the break.

I feel a bit guilty for not sharing much of what I’m making here on the blog for a while now, but let’s see if I can avoid sinking into an apologetic tone today. The thing is, sometimes I find it difficult not to just keep everything to myself. It’s like I have to wait until I fall into a more solid state of mind when working out vague ideas that are still forming and changing and reforming before I reach a point where the ideas and objects feel worked out enough to share. Otherwise, I risk losing interest and wanting to completely abandon the work right after. If you can forgive the lame metaphor, it’s like there’s a germination period during which I have to be especially careful or what I’m growing withers up. I’m fickle I guess… fickle and moody and I have fragile, slowly evolving ideas.
I feel good about what I’m making now, but even after several months, it’s all a bit less than solid. So I’m mostly keeping it to myself and the few visitors who happen to stop by in the hope that I can work out something more realized and satisfying. Man, I kinda feel self-conscious talking about this. Am I the only one it happens to? Have you ever just lost interest in something you were doing as soon as you shared it with others?
Well anyway, above is a tiny peek into my studio right now. I know it’s not very telling–sorry. But it’s something, right?
Slightly Uneasily,
-Steph
Some Changes
Posted in Toni Tiller, Work in Progress with tags Toni Tiller, wip on June 29, 2011 by Toni TillerThis week we’ve had a change with the blog, I’m sad to say that Daniel (aka Happy Cloud) is leaving us. He said his work and interests were going in a different direction and this wasn’t a good fit for him anymore. We’ve enjoyed his company here immensely and wish him the best in his pursuits, we were lucky to have him for as long as we did.
At the same time I kinda get it because I have struggled with the same thing. I’ve got about a million projects going right now and most of them are not directly art related, at least not art with a capital A, you know fine art, the good stuff. These days I’m trying to get things renovated, start a freelance business, and just keep up with the ridiculous pace I’ve set for myself that I don’t see changing any time soon. If anything it is only going to get worse.
So I ask myself if I still fit in here too. Maybe, maybe not. I like being here, the other authors have been my friends for years and I’m really reluctant to give up this blog, I enjoy the deadline even as I bitch about it in my head every week. So now I wonder if there is a way to make this work for me even without a fine art post every week. I could link to other people’s work, that’s always a quick option, but what I’m leaning toward more than that is seeing if I can find the art in what I’m doing from week to week, because for me it’s all about the approach. The same thoughts, questions, critical processes, and design decisions take place if I am making a print, a collage, working on my house, or doing a big clean out job for someone else. More time is needed to see if it can play out or if I’m just going to bore the pants off of you with my domestic projects and potential lack of visuals. I guess we’ll find out.
another monster WIP
Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, Painting with tags acrylic, Art, cartoon, Painting, wip on June 13, 2011 by Daniel Allyn LeeHere’s another WIP pic of the painting I’m working on.

I’m not yet decided if I’m going to keep the star bursts white, or fill them in with color. I added them to break up the color a bit, but while I like them in the painting, I kind of miss the impact of all that color and how with the lines it confused the eye.
I’m really hoping to make some paintings that, while using cartoon elements, don’t only elicit the response, “Oh, that’s cute.”
WIP – My Yard
Posted in Art, design, Toni Tiller with tags Art, design, landscape, Toni Tiller, wip on June 8, 2011 by Toni TillerI’ve been busy busy busy lately. My friend has decided to get rid of one of his houses and invited me to raid it for plants/rocks/supplies and since all those things, especially plants, are expensive I’m going to happily take him up on it. What it means is I spend most days right now loading up The Pig (my Chevette) going over to his house digging up plants and rocks and moving them to my house. Repeat.
So far I’ve moved about 60 plants, and I probably have another 70 or so to go, and since this doesn’t leave a lot of time to cut paper and make collages I am going to label this a design project and post it here. Title – My House, Size – 2.25 acres, Medium – Mixed Media.
This is my little cat house, which I have posted on Twitter before, but it’s had some changes and has now been landscaped with some variegated shrubs and a lot of Hosta, which hopefully the deer won’t eat. I swapped out the previous “deck” for a more natural wood plank. I’m thinking a few more plants and rocks, and maybe a slate walkway leading up to the plank.

This is a piece of woven metal that was gifted to me which I have decided to incorporate as a lattice for some climbing plants and a little Vinca will be coming soon too.

And this is where some new shrubs, Rhododendron and Azaleas were dug in and now I need to make a rock retaining wall along that dark dirt line. Hopefully it will be finished today.

monster WIP
Posted in Art, art fair, Daniel Allyn Lee, Painting with tags art fair, monster, Painting, wip on June 6, 2011 by Daniel Allyn LeeJust got done, this last weekend, with an arts and crafts fair. I was busy the last month preparing for it. It went great and I had fun, but I’m also glad its over. Now, I can work on some paintings; I’ve been staring at this roll of canvas for a month in anticipation. I did start a painting last week, that I was hoping to get done to use at the fair, but I didn’t have time to finish it. Now that I do have time, I’ve changed my plans a bit for it and hopefully I will post some finished pics soon. For now, here’s a couple WIP shots:

35″ x 35″, acrylic on canvas.
Leisurely Patterned AKA I haven’t forgotten, JD. I’m just slow.

Drippy WIP
Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags abstract, Art, drippy, let's go for a bike ride, paint, sculpture, steph gerolimatos, stephg, Tunng, video, wip on April 30, 2011 by ssstephg
Another HD video of stuff I’m making. Here’s a link in case you missed the last one. The music in this one is by the band Tunng. I love Tunng. I wish they’d tour America so I could quit life which I’m not very good at anyway and follow them around on my bicycle. I have a helmet and a bell so all I’d need are handlebar streamers and I’d be set.
Also, this three minute video literally took hours to upload to Youtube. I’m not sure how many hours it took exactly because I had to leave it uploading overnight, but I started the upload at about 1:00 in the afternoon. This is a recurring problem for me whether the video is HD or not. It just seems absurd. I dunno if it’s a problem with the site or my connection or my computer machine, but I figure I’ll try a different site as a test. So now I’m wondering if anyone has a video hosting site they really like. I hear good things about Vimeo. Any other suggestions?
Also also, after it took so very long to upload, I feel I should urge you to watch the full screen version. It’s much more effective at that size anyway.
OK, I guess that’s it for now.
Love,
-Steph
Spinning WIP
Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags Art, motion sickness, process, steph gerolimatos, stephg, video, wip on April 16, 2011 by ssstephg
Here’s a new view of one of my works in progress. What’s weird is that watching this gives me motion sickness. Editing nearly made me upchuck. Who says upchuck anymore? …me, I guess. I also can’t watch those amusement park rides that spin and the bottom falls out and leaves people stuck to the wall. I shot this in HD so you can watch it full screen if you like. Doing that makes me even sicker.
And for those of you with s-l-o-w internet, here are a couple of still photos.

As for not so sharp photos, well, you be the judge of that. I’m still working on this one. It’s sort of a sketch to figure some things out. It measures 17 x 10 x 3/4 inches and is acrylic and stuff on wood. Figuring is proving difficult this week though. I’m sick and my everything hurts. Not to mention, I have one of those barking goose coughs now. It’s distracting.

Yes, that’s a hole through the center of the top part. It’s a diptych at this stage, acrylic on cradled panels. And it stands about 40 or a little more inches tall altogether. It may turn out to be two separate pieces. It will look much different in the end. But that’s half the fun of WIPs, right? I guess.
