Old Habits

Posted in abstract, Art, Collage, J. D. Hastings, Toni Tiller, Work in Progress with tags , , , , , on May 30, 2012 by Toni Tiller

After getting all jazzed up last week about the new materials and all that color and pattern oh how exciting because boy don’t I love new challenges,  went upstairs, spread everything out, and picked…

that.

It’s so boring.  And if you add a swipe of teal in there it becomes the exact same color scheme as the Ramada Inn circa 1984.  I think I must have been terrified when I was looking down at everything, all those pieces, 87 total, and just selected the colors that were safest to me.  On the other had there were some successful elements, it was another clarification of how the white thread changes and pulls together the designs, and the actual sewing of the shapes came much ore easily.  Not sure if it is worth finishing though.

Well, I flipped it upside down, and it might be done. The jury is still out. Do I want to leave it soft and chewy? Or do I want a crunchy cookie? Depends on the mood, and I am nothing if not moody. Whaddaya think, Fini or get back to work?

Basketball and Sex

Jeremy Lin is the the cinderella story of the NBA this season. He was a no-one who came out of Harvard and was on the bench for the New York Knicks when he was chosen to come on the court where he went on an electric run to rejuvenate the team. I had made a couple of monotypes dedicated to him but both were unsuccessful, poorly formulated attempts. Here I took one of these flat prints and I’ve begun the process of reforming a composition with a slightly sexualized nude, utilizing bits and pieces of the underlying marks and forms. It is only fitting, I think, to honor this injured basketball player, who has had surgery on his leg and will be out the rest of the season. Baseball and sex are the usual analogies, but I’m throwing up a three pointer and lets see if it misses. This is a work in progress.

Your Own Dander, Your own Sunbeam

work in progress by StephG

Here’s a work in progress. Below is an earlier version I posted a week or two ago. Painting is going pretty well right now. I sometimes wonder why I ever leave the studio. Not much else seems worth the bother. My cat just entered the room, shot me a perfunctory stare, then laid down in his own personal sunbeam. He knows what’s up.

Above is a closeup of what’s happening with one of the pieces I posted last weekend. Below is another work in progress. It’s another of the two foot square panels.

Don’t let the title of this post mislead you. I’m no math geek. I mean, I do think math is great. I love math geeks. It’s just that there is a ton of math I haven’t actually used since high school. As a result, there is much that I have forgotten. I’m still good at measuring and fractions because that’s handy for building things. But honestly, in the interest of creating a convoluted post title, I looked up the square root of eight today in lieu of even trying to figure it out.

Back to art! My very special pal built for me this week, eight fabulously-crafted two foot square panels. That’s him above alongside the panels with his blue ball and his blue yoga mat. Thank you, handsome, beardy Bodart! Each panel is cradled with one by twos which leaves a little room in the back for things like squishy foam and velvet or whatever else strikes my fancy once I start cutting into these suckers. I haven’t started any subtractive work yet, just additive. See a couple of works in progress below.

WIP: Limbs

Living in NY requires money. I have little time to eat or breathe. I suppose I’ll have to learn to live on 4 hours of sleep to give myself enough space to paint and do my laundry. What ends up happening is I’m left with beginning projects that require blocks of time to conceptualize, think, sit and allow to grow. I don’t have those blocks. This is another piece that may very well ferment like so many others have over the past few months.

Oozing WIP Update: Round 2

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on December 31, 2011 by ssstephg

Here’s a bit of progress on this one. Remember what it looked like before? Well, here it is now. It’s not a big change, but what with the holidays and feeling as if I’d rather hide in a dungeon than open my eyes most days lately, I figure any progress is good.

Hope you’re all enjoying your days more than a sharp stick in the eye and fingers crossed for a positive start to this next year!

work in progress by stephg

I’ve had this piece sitting around, waiting for paint for months. This week, I started painting on it. There will be much, much more paint before it’s finished. It will likely end up with little resemblance to what you see here.  But I thought it might be fun to share progress shots of this one along the way. You can see a photo of it at an earlier stage after the jump.

Think bonbons. Think icing. Think sugar. Think of that awful sick feeling you get when you eat too much, because that’s what I’m thinking while making these. Provided all things fall into place in such a way that I end up satisfied with the end result, these will be displayed in a group show in December at The Northampton Center For The Arts. The show is a yearly invitational exhibit curated by the lovely and talented Jane Lund. This year’s theme is “desserts.” I threw around the idea of a more literal approach since I do actually enjoy switching gears to representational painting every now and then. But in the end, I decided that since the work I’m currently making already fits the bill in a slightly off-beat way that I should just roll with it. Might as well appreciate serendipity when it lands in your lap like a warm cat on a cold night, right?

Slow Rowing & No [n] Sense

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , on September 24, 2011 by ssstephg

Here’s another closeup shot of a work in progress. It looks like ice cream, doesn’t it? Well, it ain’t so don’t eat it. God I’m tired! And I have very little to say. And I am in need of a shower. And I apologize to you as well as to myself for beginning these sentences with the word and. It’s just not proper.

Let’s see if this post is salvageable. We could spend some time talking about the relevance of the ice cream resemblance. OK. Well, I’ve spent a good long time looking at images of food to fuel my brain for this series. What else can I say about that? Oh, things and stuff I’m sure, but what’s the point really? The point is just one of many that I have no energy to make.

And so, (there I go again with the and) I will, instead, leave you with a favorite old video of mine. Who wants to steal an ice cream truck and drive off into the desert with me to make out? I have buckets of paint and if you’re half as cute as James Iha in a dress I’ll let you play with my gun.

Loveandjunk,

Your Spleen Is Vacationing In My Studio, See Look!

Oh to be prolific in an orderly way, as in, to begin and complete specific things within a foreseeable time frame–what I wouldn’t give for that! OK well, as nice as that would be (and when that is my goal I am even capable of doing it), sometimes it’s just nicer to dive in and jump around in the mess without caring so much about presentable finished pieces. And that is precisely what I am in the midst of doing these days. Thus the sporadic bits and pieces views I continue to share here and there, on and off. Today, I give you more bits.

The first image off to the left there is of a sculpture in progress that I have since continued working. It may or may not be done now, decision pending. The photo below here is a closeup shot of another sculpture. This one is finished. I will also include a complete view of it after the break. Read more »

A little because that’s all I got. Here you get to see the artist at work kinda like a monkey at the zoo. Like my heat wave work smock? It matches the art. Pretty stylish, eh? And here is a detail of part of the WIP.
