Fuck It. Giving In To Possible Correspondence

Despite a lack of snow, this bleak cold, dark winter has been kicking my ass. Even art making doesn’t seem to be enough to make me want to get out of bed in the morning. And the prospect of spending hours closed up alone in my cold studio, without even the company of my sweet, warm cats, is no motivation. So this last week, I moved production to the cozy inner sanctum of the living room. Of course, this meant scaling down and adapting working methods to something a bit tidier than my usual paint-slinging. So I’m making postcards. They are small and easy and I can manage making them. Sometimes you just have to say fuck it and keep going no matter how or why. Fuck it. I may even mail them. That’s one above. Here are two more:

A Shaped Matrix, Round & Oozing (WIP)

work in progress by stephg

I’ve had this piece sitting around, waiting for paint for months. This week, I started painting on it. There will be much, much more paint before it’s finished. It will likely end up with little resemblance to what you see here.  But I thought it might be fun to share progress shots of this one along the way. You can see a photo of it at an earlier stage after the jump.

From The Archive: 1994 Paint & Relevance

For a while now, I’ve been thinking quite a bit about some art I made a long time ago. It’s been moldering in a portfolio (some of it folded in half) in a corner of my studio for years. Lately, art making has me feeling antsy, as it does sometimes, and my mind is searching for ways around it. What I used to do when I hit a stage like this was gesso a bunch of papers, tape them to the wall or the floor and just fucking work without giving a fuck, make a mess, play with whatever was around until I’d worked out whatever was itching up my britches.

Well today, I dug out a handful of the rumpled old works that were on my mind. Above and below are two from the vault circa 1994. It’s fun to look back at this stuff. There are things I still like about them and things I’d do differently now, but I’m thinking the approach is something I need to revisit. Specifically, I want to be careless and make a mess. No, I want to make a bunch of really big messes and see what comes of it. Wish me luck. No… wish me fun.

Think bonbons. Think icing. Think sugar. Think of that awful sick feeling you get when you eat too much, because that’s what I’m thinking while making these. Provided all things fall into place in such a way that I end up satisfied with the end result, these will be displayed in a group show in December at The Northampton Center For The Arts. The show is a yearly invitational exhibit curated by the lovely and talented Jane Lund. This year’s theme is “desserts.” I threw around the idea of a more literal approach since I do actually enjoy switching gears to representational painting every now and then. But in the end, I decided that since the work I’m currently making already fits the bill in a slightly off-beat way that I should just roll with it. Might as well appreciate serendipity when it lands in your lap like a warm cat on a cold night, right?

Pink Circle Chain Link

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on November 12, 2011 by ssstephg

sketch by stephg
8 x 10 inches
ballpoint pen, acrylic and soft pastel on all rag matboard

You may remember that I default to circles. Here I am doing it again. If you think of the outline of a circle as a route that ends where it begins (and you are me) you may also be able to see the circle as a metaphor for acceptance, and a reflection of a recurring pattern of existence. This helps explain (to me, at least) why I return to the shape again and again.

Again and again,

Your Spleen Is Vacationing In My Studio, See Look!

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , on September 17, 2011 by ssstephg

Oh to be prolific in an orderly way, as in, to begin and complete specific things within a foreseeable time frame–what I wouldn’t give for that! OK well, as nice as that would be (and when that is my goal I am even capable of doing it), sometimes it’s just nicer to dive in and jump around in the mess without caring so much about presentable finished pieces. And that is precisely what I am in the midst of doing these days. Thus the sporadic bits and pieces views I continue to share here and there, on and off. Today, I give you more bits.

The first image off to the left there is of a sculpture in progress that I have since continued working. It may or may not be done now, decision pending. The photo below here is a closeup shot of another sculpture. This one is finished. I will also include a complete view of it after the break. Read more »

Here. This is another abstract video featuring one of my hard working sculptures. I am learning something new and (hopefully) getting closer to figuring out how I want these to function every time I work on a new one.

Thanks for looking!

How’s that for a contrast to Jason’s lovely black and white photo series? This stuff I’m working on now I’m really having fun with, but it won’t be done for some time. I may finish other things sooner which I’ll show you, but I’ll be uploading details like these in the meantime. I think they’re kinda fun to look at.

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles in Northampton: Upcoming Chalk Art Festival

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2010 by ssstephg

Northampton, Massachusetts is holding a chalk art festival. And I’m in it! You should come if you’re anywhere near Western Massachusetts on Friday September 10. I’ll be drawing in downtown Northampton along with five other artists. We each get a 5 x 5 foot concrete square to adorn. The chalk art festival is being presented as part of Northampton’s monthly Arts Night Out.

I know I’ve been lax with the Sunday Sidewalk Doodles lately. See, even the drawing above isn’t a finished piece. Apologies, but oh gee I’ve been super busy, first with KPAO! and now getting everything ready for a solo show in October at The Northampton Center for the Arts. Yay! Linklinklink come see my art in the flesh! All good stuff so I’m not complaining, just letting you know why and promoting my art in the process.

Biglove,

Saccharine Cartography Sketch: Orange Nipple In Leftover Paint

I have two paintings on panel in the works right now which I’ll get to posting about soon. In the meantime, here’s a small gestural sketch I made with leftover paint at the end of the day. It’s related to these and these.

Shiny and New! Work in progress is now “Alluvium”

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on April 17, 2010 by ssstephg

Yeah. All freaking titled and everything. Here it is competed.

Alluvium
48 x 24 x 2 inches deep
acrylic on pine-cradled masonite panel with a big hole through the top and cellophane sandwiched between frosted plexiglass behind the hole

I’ll post a couple of detail photos after the jump.

You can click on the photo to see it bigger. If you’re interested in seeing process shots from along the way, I’ve been posting them as I worked here and here and here. Finishing this was a bit of a pain in the butt. I had an idea of what I wanted to happen behind the hole but my attempts kept falling short. In the last couple of days, I changed my mind a handful of times and there were a number of fruitless trips to drug stores and art supply shops. I can’t tell you how many times I assembled and reassembled various combinations of materials behind that hole. It was a little like the story of Goldilocks and the three bears–everything I tried was just too something or other. In the end, I went back to the original idea and my final trip was to the hardware store right around the corner where, of course, I found exactly what I needed. Yay!

Happy Endings to you all!  What?  I didn’t mean that, you bunch of perverts!  I meant happy endings like I’m happy about how this piece has ended.  But whatever you’re in the mood for I guess.  Good luck finding it!

Paint and Indecisive Oriention

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , on March 6, 2010 by ssstephg

Two views of one painting, although now I’m looking at the pics side by side I’m thinking it might work better if there were two paintings.
just under 24 x 16″
acrylic on panel

Here’s an unfinished work in progress. I’m still working on it. It’s not finished. Wait, are we stuck in a tautology? Well, I’m starting to think I’m stuck in a never-ending painting hell. No no, I’m fine with pre-completion infinity. In fact, I’m starting to fancy myself a sort of neo Jay DeFeo. (Not.) Too romantic for words. I should shut up, huh?

The black circle is a hole through the panel. There’s nothing behind it yet. I’m considering several options. Two views because well, how to orient? I am currently undecided. Feel free to weigh in on the matter. I’ve been working on this for oh hell, I’ve lost track… a year maybe. My inability to finish art is most certainly a reflection of a deep seated fear of commitment. That short-lived marriage really messed me up! Just kidding. I’ve always been indecisive. It’s one of my more charming traits I’m sure. Anyway, I have DETAIL PICS! See them after the jump! Read more »

Yeah so, maybe I’ll see you there.

Bubblegum Icon: a collaborative painting/sculpture hybrid

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on January 2, 2010 by ssstephg

Bubblegum Icon
Stephanie Gerolimatos & Mark Bodah
26 x 21 inches
durabond, wire mesh, acrylic, dryer hose, foil, pink flocking

You know how it is when you start a piece and everything seems fine for a while and then somewhere along the way you realize you’re just not feeling it? Sometimes, the answer is to ignore it for a bit and come back later with a fresh perspective. Sometimes the answer is to chuck it in the dumpster. And sometimes the answer is to leave it for dead in your friend’s studio until she decides to try and resuscitate it McGuyver-style with some aluminum foil and pink flocking. Option number three is how “Bubblegum Icon” was born.  When my pal Mark Bodah abandoned this piece I just couldn’t stand to let it die a peaceful, dignified death. Well I mean, it was sitting there all bones and pale as a ghost. So like a well meaning mother, I force fed the child til it was fat and rosy. Remember, it’s the thought that counts.

To see a detail photo of Mark’s and my bastard love child, please follow the jump! Read more »

Prelude to Autumn in Wax: More Encaustic Bites

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , on September 12, 2009 by ssstephg

Four more paintings from the Passing February series. *Three of them after the jump.
3.5 x 5 inches
encaustic on panel

Technically, it’s still summer for what? Just over a week right? Yeah. Well, as true as that is, I’m just not feelin’ it. The past few days have been downright chilly here in Western Mass. Last night, I snuggled up under a down comforter to keep warm. Pedaling home from a bike ride the other day, I watched a smattering of bright yellow leaves fall to the ground. Crap! I’m not ready for autumn yet! Our extended cold, wet spring barely left time for any serious summer weather. I hardy even had time to complain about the blistering heat! Grrr… I’m angry.

However, in a conscious effort to be a more positive person, I’m attempting to quell my displeasure by concentrating on all the fabulous facets of fall. Lists are useful, right? (Nevermind the growing collection of undone To-Do Lists scattered randomly around my abode.) Let’s make a list!

New Art: Wheels Within Wheels

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on June 20, 2009 by ssstephg

acrylic, red flocking and gold leaf on panel with three holes
holes are lined with red foam-backed velour
24 x 16 inches

It’s all about the circles lately. But why? I dunno. Maybe it means I’m travelling in circles, spinning my wheels, never really getting anywhere. Maybe it means I’m particularly centered and approaching wholeness and enlightenment. Maybe I just really really like the gesture required to draw a circle, the circle’s symmetry and simplicity, and the flexibility afforded by the shape.

At any rate, click read more to see more photos after the jump. Oh, and as usual, all pics will enlarge when clicked. Read more »

Scott Tulay @ Wunderarts Update

Posted in Art, art on paper, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , , on April 27, 2009 by ssstephg

The gallery reception on Saturday night was lots of fun! The art, which was even more exciting than I’d expected, found a perfect setting in the refined but not overly slick space that is Wunderarts.  The gallery, a beautifully transformed former auto parts shop, has a high-ceilinged, wide open interior that is partitioned by a simple configuration of low movable walls.  The overall effect is neutral and elegant with definite spatial character–the sort of place you walk into and say, “What a great space!”.   In Tulay’s series of charcoal, pastel and ink abstracted drawings he uses geometric forms suggestive of architectural elements against renderings of sky to define ambiguous moody spaces where form and formlessness shift seamlessly. The drawings, which were all cleanly floated on white mat backgrounds within narrow white shadowbox frames, manage to suggest both interior and exterior space within a single composition.   Tulay stuck to a limited palette of black, grey, white and either warm or cool blue for every work. As I’m a sucker both for art that finds that sort of wonderfully tense balance between representation and abstraction and art that successfully uses a minimal color scheme, I found myself contemplating whether the soon to be new half a roof for my little old house could wait another few months so that I could hang this diptych in my living room:

charcoal/pastel diptych 22″ x 60″

Reality won so as of 9:00 Saturday night this gem was still available at a very reasonable price.

I didn’t manage to get many decent photos as my camera blows in anything but perfect light conditions. So in lieu of posting a bunch of dark, blurry pictures, I’m going to point you all to the artist’s site where you can see his work in as full glory as pixels on a monitor Read more »
