I don’t have any new art to share this week, so I will take a moment to remind anyone local to head on over to my studio and see me on the 30th.

In the last two weeks, I have switched from focusing on the small patch of woods in the urban park where I work to the more industrial side of St. Louis. My city is a strange place that still makes things, all kinds of things, from chemicals to jet planes. This reality means that there is a lot of space (most manufacturing centers stopped building up and started building out at least by the 1940′s), and since most of my city’s population had left for the suburbs by the end of the 1970′s, that means a lot of empty space. So “space” is what I have been concentrating on lately (with a few exceptions). Enjoy!

2010 has been a looonnng year, or at least it’s sure seemed long. This year, I have experienced innumerable highs and lows, which is strange because the entire time while they were happening, I felt sort of distracted. Realizations in hindsight… Anyway, here are 25 of my favorite pictures that I took this year (kind of a tradition now for me). Enjoy!
I decided that I would return to an old, photo subject for me on Darteboard, the ongoing construction at the Saint Louis Art Museum. Enjoy!

If you have moved away from St. Louis in the last 10 years or so, it is your time to miss home. The home zone is now host to a growing array of exciting contemporary arts venues, and given the cost of living, it is a good time to be in the Lou. Of the burgeoning scene, few have the pedigree of Los Caminos, a new joint venture between Cole Root (producer of shows at the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis and Boots Contemporary Art Space) and Francesca Wilmott (fellow Chicago transplant and former co-director of Chi’s Concertina Gallery, as well as, organizer for displays at Hyde Park Art Center and Art Chicago). The grand opening exhibition (10/2-11/20) features work by Los Angeles’ own, RJ Messineo. If you can make the October 2nd opening at 7-10pm, I highly recommend it!
36 Hours in St. Louis

With its green spaces, varied night life and restaurants, plus a mix of Midwestern sensibility and Southern charm, St. Louis is a city looking to the future.
So who is coming to visit??
My wife, Mandi Gray, will have her design (pictured above) featured in FORM 2010, at the Luminary Center for the Arts in August. This is a project that she did back when we lived in Chicago, and it is near and dear to her. Her words:
“As an interior designer, it is always fun to work on unique and sometimes unexpected projects. This was definitely the case for me when Rachel Carlson walked into my design firm and asked for information on bamboo. The connection between myself and this soon-to-be client was instant. As our discussion of her motor coach progressed, a remodel project came to fruition. We both believed this project would not be for ourselves soley, but one that could inspire others. A project that was a bit outside the norm that would allow others to think creatively about any space and make design visions come to life.
The motor coach was a typical 1970’s space, filled to the brim with orange shag carpeting, orange velvet upholstery, and orange plastic side and back splashes. All of this began to change once Rachel and I put our heads together and decided to focus on environmental concepts and a “martini lounge meets zen garden” theme. Our desire was to keep the feeling of traveling in a motor coach alive, but introduce a lush, comfortable, and nature-inspired space for her family to enjoy while vacationing.
Bamboo, chocolate burl cork flooring, eco-resin side and back splashes, jelly bean rocks, and mohair were all used to create the desired look for the space.
Overall, this is still my favorite design project to date. I had an amazing time working on not only the project, but with such kind people. This project may be a bit unusual, but it is definitely a functional, beautiful space for her family to enjoy for years to come.”
The motor coach will be driven down to St. Louis and parked out front of FORM, and everyone is invited to come and check it out!

Posting has been a real chore for me lately, which is why I missed contributing last friday. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t want to post anything, it’s just that my internet connection has been all messed up, ever since the big power surge that killed all of my favorite distractions a few weeks ago, so uploading anything picture-wise takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R. Anyway, I’ll get everything sorted out, but until then, my posts might be a bit scarce. Nothing personal…

I was kindly invited to participate in this exhibition featuring new work by Galina Todorova, an emigrant of Bulgaria. For it, I was asked to include one piece of artwork, and I chose a small, oil painting from my “Thread of Theseus” series. If you are in the area, you should definitely stop in and check out the show!

What can I say, Polaroid is the Jello of camera gear; everyone loves them, they’re both easy to make, and they are both more fun than the alternatives. Over the years, I shot with two Polaroid cameras, a 600 and a Spectra, and it was always with the spirit of adventure that I took them into the street or around the house. I have read that Fuji will be producing “Polaroid” film in the wake of Polaroid stopping the manufacture of their own. It is news that excites me, because no matter how instant digital has made things, there is still something to watching the magic (or chemistry) of traditional photography unfold into an image right in front of your face that posting pictures on the computer can’t compete with. These shots are of old me and now me, old wife and now wife, Carbondale, Chicago and St. Louis. Enjoy, and sorry about the dust!

My friend Curt, single father of five (two are out of the house) and all around awesome, let me style him and his family’s faces like the band KISS recently. The two littlest ones were impossible to sit still, for the makeup or the portrait, but I was expecting their moving around to be part of the shot, anyway. Two outtakes after the jump.

Ok, not literally. Actually, St. Louis is finally approaching a city-wide ban on smoking in restaurants and bars, and listening to all of the resultant bickering led to the creation of this little work. A few years ago, when I was still living in Chicago, I experienced all of the same sort of back-and-forths that I see here today. Chicago was another city that seemingly couldn’t “see” itself as a non-smoking town, and a lot of establishment owners were worried that they’d be closing down. Guess what happened? Smoking was banned, and business actually went up. To be honest, I am mostly ambivalent to the topic; I have been a smoker and I am now a non-smoker. However, I do think that it is important that everyone is provided with a smoke-free workplace, but on the other hand, I think that laws that restrict smoking outside, or in your own apartment, are a bit oppressive.
Their statement: “White Flag Projects presents the Provincial Gallery Simulator. White Flag believes that negligent provincial art galleries operate with undue pretense, and abuse their inflated authority to routinely betray the good will of their patrons by exhibiting art they know to be compromised, by misrepresenting their motives and expertise, by effectively defrauding both their artists and clients, and by generally diminishing the environment for meaningful contemporary art as a result of their perverse curatorial behavior.
This video documents those patrons abused by the provincial gallery system between February 14th and February 17th, 2008, in the Front Room of the Contemporary Art Museum-St. Louis.”

I finally developed the five rolls of film that I’ve had sitting around since the end of summer, and here are some of the highlights. They were all shot in the St. Louis environs with the obvious Chicago exception. Viva la 35mm!
All Nikon N65, N80, or N8008s with either the Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, or Nikkor 35-135mm f/3.5-4.5 AF Lens attached and Fuji Superia ISO400 Film.
Me and Leslie Hall from Leslie and the Lys (I picked her up in the lobby).
Last night was the opening for the Big Ass Indie Art and Craft Show, and it was undoubtedly the most fun that I have ever had at one of my own art shows. There were performances by Clownvis Presley, burlesque dancers (Lolla Van Ella, Michelle Minx), and Leslie and the Lys, plus, a ton of art. The place was so jam-packed last night, that I’m going to have to go back today and really check everything out. More pics after the jump.
All Nikon D50 with 50mm f/1.8D Lens attached.
I was recently included in this event at the Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Art Gallery in St. Louis. I have no idea who else is showing, but it was juried by Kate Poss of Art St. Louis and Washington University, so I expect that it should be interesting. I won’t actually be in attendance for the opening, but I am thinking about sending my brother down there to stand in. If anyone makes it there, please let me know how it went.
