Une Autre Sketch in pastel & acrylic

acrylic and pastel on matboard
prolly about 17 x 11 inches or so-ish, i dunno

Much denser and fussier than the ones I’ve been doing recently, this one I did quite a while ago. I remember that I had mixed feelings about it at the time. I couldn’t make up my mind. I kind of liked it. I kind of didn’t like it. Then i put it in a box for a long time and forgot about it. I happened upon it the other day and added that big green stroke. Now I’ve decided that I’m no longer undecided about how I feel about it. I was right to begin with. I kind of like it. I kind of don’t like it.

Painterly Gestural Sketch: A Good Disembowelling

12 x 9 inches
acrylic on matboard

To me, this one seems very related to the orange nipple sketch I posted previously on darteboard. A friend of mine saw a small image of this and associated it with innards. I didn’t set out to do that but I can see what he meant. Maybe the bodily references are subconscious. Probably. Regardless, painting these makes me happy.

8 x 10 inches
acrylic on archival mat board

I have two paintings on panel in the works right now which I’ll get to posting about soon. In the meantime, here’s a small gestural sketch I made with leftover paint at the end of the day. It’s related to these and these.

Sketchy Stuff

8 x 10 inches
nails, gouache and acrylic on matboard
blubbityblubbitybluh. I don’t have much to say today. The sketches I’m posting today are related to this one I posted a while back. For these photos, I placed something white behind the holes, but really, I don’t think white looks best behind them. Unlike my larger paintings where I always place something behind the openings, I sometimes like to leave the holes in these sketches open or empty. If I were to frame them, I’d probably float them on top of a darker matboard. One more after the jump. Read more »

This sketch reminded me of something so, I decided to add the star and red background on the compooter to kind of play it up just for fun.

This is not pretty, but not all sketches happen on paper. This is another post about process.

This is a physical, 8″ x 8″ sketch of the type of “Flower” pieces I’ve been posting lately.

Because I hadn’t made on of the Flowers in a couple years I needed to remind myself how to make them. Additionally, while its hard to tell, I figured out how to construct layers of these around each other for an effect like this, but with the different shape.

This one turned out ugly because I used whatever scraps I had laying around regardless of color and used too small of a frame to adequately house the thing. I will likely un-stretch it once I start working on bigger versions and use the pieces in something else. However, the lessons learned in making this turd make it far more valuable than it appears.

8.5 x 11″
gouache, acrylic, soot and wax paper on all rag matboard

Here’s a quick sketch from this week. I like working on this matboard. It has a great almost spongey density and a fine toothy texture. I think this particular board is 4-ply Alpharag which is made by Bainbridge. I made those vertical strips by incising parallel lines in the matboard with a knife, tearing out a layer or two of paper from between them and then rubbing soot into the fuzzy texture of the torn board with the backside of a spoon. The soot I collected by holding the spoon over a candle flame. Isn’t that how they used to collect the pigment to make Lamp Black paint? So romantic. I mention these things because they interest me, aka I’m a materials and process whore. I was considering just how true that is last night while leafing through an art supply catalog fantasizing aloud about finding exciting new materials that would inevitably lead my work in fabulous, new directions. My friend told me I had “Gear Acquisition Syndrome” or GAS, a condition from which he himself suffers. I think a more accurate term in my case would be “Supply Acquisition Syndrome” or SAS. Anyone else in the same boat? I’m not alone here, am I?

Ah Hell, I got nothin: Nonsense Post Number 13,001

How bout this sketch from an old journal?  Chronic insomnia self portrait.

Yeah sorry I didn’t post at a reasonable hour today but you know, it’s the holidays and I’ve been busy hanging out with people I rarely see and eating like a pig and stuff.  I’m sitting in my living room right now while three friends are playing “Take On Me” on guitar, bass and accordian.   Good times.  Let’s see, what else?  Um…  Here’s a slightly blurry photo of Dermott,  my pet turtle from a few years ago.  He’s nine now so he’s about six or seven in the pic.  Handsome devil, isn’t he?

Ever wonder what the ratio of fur to body is on your cat?    It’s about eight parts fur to two parts body on my pal Buster.  I found that out when he had to have his foot shaved one time.

Coincidentally, eight to two is the ratio of beeswax to damar resin I use when mixing encaustic medium and here’s a detail from another encaustic icon work in progress.

Alrighty, I’ll stop now. Sorry bout that. I promise this sort of nonsense post won’t become a habit. Hope you all are having a great holiday season.

Big Hearts,

When the storm came in at Woodstock. Anyway, I spent time this week down in old Baltimore with the rents and did some drawing with Harry. His concentration tightens and his energy accelerates when he draws, which doesn’t happen as much as it should, as far as I’m concerned. Here are Harry’s drawings:

Um, so this is a REALLY rough sketch…

Posted in Art, Collage, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , , , on August 4, 2009 by jdhastings

I made this the first weekend after I’d owned my Pazzles machine. It was my first attempt at tesselating tiles together, which explains why I used a lot of truly disposable materials. I suppose I didn’t have to subject you to it, but some people like seeing early stages of development and experimentation, and this is that. It really is a sketch by the strict definition. Laying out ideas roughly to get an idea of how they work.

I promise my next post will be more… refined.

17 x 11 1/2″ sketch
acrylic, oil and dry pastel on all rag board

A while back, I included some sketches in a post which some of you seemed to appreciate seeing.  Since I tend to accumulate these quick little works, I thought I’d post a few more today.  So here’s another look at some of the stuff that hangs out in the background of my studio.
