about 5 x 5 feet square

My pal Mark and I had fun doodling on the sidewalk at the third Great HolyokeBlock Party in Heritage Park last weekend. We brought a couple of boxes of chalk and with very little urging, convinced a bunch of kids to help us cover the concrete. More pics after the jump! Read more »

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles: Not An Octoanything

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on June 19, 2011 by ssstephg

I started out with the intent of filling a Tumblr request for an octopus attacking a boat. Problem was, it was way too hot for eight legs that day. I quit after three legs and no boat. Then later when it cooled off a bit, I came back and finished up what I could before it got too dark to see. I’ll have to give this one another shot soon.

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles: Incorporeal Patterns

kpao! sidewalk drawing

We brought sidewalk chalk over to the park the other day and made a big collaborative drawing. We traced our bodies in overlapping positions and then filled in the shapes with various patterns. The kids loved that it looked like a crime scene to begin with. There were at least nine body outlines. The drawing ended up being lots of fun and pretty cool to look at. Two more pics after the jump!

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles Return From The Abyss

Cute Freaker

It’s SPRING!!! That didn’t prevent it from snowing here Friday though, Friday… which was April Fool’s Day. Mother Nature is a practical joker. Although I didn’t appreciate the cold wet slush, I admit that given the power of climate control, I’d have done the same. Still, earlier in the week it was nice enough for sidewalk doodling so that’s what we did.

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles: November Is A Nice Day For Ice Cream

“November Is A Nice Day For Ice Cream”
by StephG

It’s been a while since I posted a sidewalk doodle. I’ve been busy with things and stuff and haven’t felt much like drawing on the walk. But the other morning the urge hit me. The concrete was wet and the sky was grey and misty. Perfect? Well no, but whatever. I felt like it.

Happy Sunday!

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles: Eyeballing the Bargain Bins

This week, WABU and I tried out these new (to us) Crayola Sidewalk Crayons. I’ve seen them around for a while and wanted to give ‘em a try because the colors looked so much more intense than the regular sidewalk chalk, but I’ve held off til now because the price for the amount you get seemed steep. They retail at more than three times the cost of the same brand of chalk. So when I found them marked waythehelldown on superendoftheseason sale, I of course, snagged a box to test them out.

Verdict: I’m glad I didn’t pay full price.
Compared to the chalk, the crayons are harder and feel almost a little waxy. That’s not a bad thing. It’s kinda cool actually. The disappointment was that the color saturation wasn’t quite as intense as I’d expected. Most of the crayon colors are more pigmented than their chalk counterparts. The acid green in particular is very nice. But some of the colors didn’t seem that much, if at all, brighter than the chalk. The medium blue, dark blue and medium pinkish purple colors are nearly the same in either crayon or chalk form. Meh. Oh well. I may still pick up a few more packages from the bargain bin. A buck twenty-five seems fair.

Over and out,

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles: Friday’s Festival & Frosted Fuchsia Flames

Posted in Art with tags , , , , , , , on September 12, 2010 by ssstephg

Frosted Fuchsia Flames

I drew this for the first annual Northampton Chalk Art Festival this past Friday which I told you about here. Actually, this is just before I finished it, but it’s mostly done minus a detail or two. There were five other artists who contributed drawings. I’ll add images of their work as I find time to edit photos from the day. Maybe I’ll even write more about the experience. I was really psyched to be a part of this event since I spend so much time drawing on the concrete already and people seem to respond with such positivity. It was a great day! Good good stuff!

Big thanks to the Northampton Center for the Arts, the city of Northampton, Northampton Business Improvement District and Chartpak Inc. for making this festival happen! I’m looking forward to next year’s already!

Out for now,

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles in Northampton: Upcoming Chalk Art Festival

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2010 by ssstephg

Northampton, Massachusetts is holding a chalk art festival. And I’m in it! You should come if you’re anywhere near Western Massachusetts on Friday September 10. I’ll be drawing in downtown Northampton along with five other artists. We each get a 5 x 5 foot concrete square to adorn. The chalk art festival is being presented as part of Northampton’s monthly Arts Night Out.

I know I’ve been lax with the Sunday Sidewalk Doodles lately. See, even the drawing above isn’t a finished piece. Apologies, but oh gee I’ve been super busy, first with KPAO! and now getting everything ready for a solo show in October at The Northampton Center for the Arts. Yay! Linklinklink come see my art in the flesh! All good stuff so I’m not complaining, just letting you know why and promoting my art in the process.

Biglove,

My very sweet neighbors’ tiny tot across the street turned one this week. There was a backyard party and I was flattered when asked if I’d decorate the sidewalk for the big fete. It was a blazingly hot day and I had too many other obligations to dedicate as much time as I’d have liked, but I think it came out cute nonetheless. The theme of the party was ladybugs and the invitation which was super cute served as a great inspiration. Analia’s adorable older brother Joey (age six) and his adorable friend Angel of about the same age helped me by “planting a garden” along the walkway leading to the backyard party site.

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles: Buzz Melvin, Peter Pan & Daffy Duck

Posted in Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , on July 4, 2010 by ssstephg

I’ve mentioned the whole KPAO! thing here before. This week’s sidewalk doodle comes courtesy of a KPAO! outing in the park where our August fete is to be held. We normally draw on the sidewalk outside mi casa, but for a change, one evening early this week, the posse sauntered over to Kennedy Park and covered the concrete with chalk. This one was a collaboration between myself, Bodart and our friend Ida. Daffy in the upper right was drawn by Sir Edwin.

Oh yeah, did you hear? The Melvins finally hit the charts! I love The Melvins.
