Virility, Sterility, Puerility. Andro Pause is Coming to Town.

I’m continuing this series of the male figure. Here’s a new word I came across: Andropause. I find this an amusing attempt by some to excoriate the more complex feminine process of midlife aging. As a member of the male gender class, I admit we are the weaker sex emotionally, psychologically and, considering our place in the biosphere, physically. Lets face it, men are deep down scared shitless. That’s why we bluster and play the the macho door-busting hero. The Male mid-life crisis might as well be call boyopause.

Oil on Canvas With Nails from Last Century: Sharps & Fragile Shells

Posted in Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , on February 6, 2010 by ssstephg

oil on canvas with nails
22.5 x 27″

This one’s from about ’98 I think.  I painted it over an older painting–a self portrait.  So my head’s hidden under the egg there, and the title is “Egghead”.  OK, not really.  It’s not titled. Something I like about this painting is how the image kind of illustrates the life of the painting. The painting started off as one thing which I then destroyed to make something else in the same way the egg breaks to allow something new and more interesting to grow out of it.  That’s pretty much how paintings evolve for me.  I build them in layers that get covered up along the way in order that the end result is (hopefully) a more interesting whole.

*hmmmn, that pic’s a little blurry.   I’ll see if I can find a better one later to replace it.  Right now, I have to sign off and head to physical therapy.

Later,
-Steph

*EDIT: I found a better pic and switched it. This one’s much clearer and can be enlarged by clicking.

Self Portrait with Stargard

The word “Genius” is bandied about far too often in our mediocrity infused society. The word has become watered down to the point that it can no longer do justice to works like this one, which deserve more than simple, Earthly praise.

Obviously a work like this transcends our regular notions of art and I wouldn’t blame you if you asked if you could make pilgrimage to worship in its divine presence. Unfortunately, I have to deny you the opportunity. I fear that too much exposure to humanity will weather it, so that future generations would be robbed of it. None of us want that.

You may, however, donate as much money to me as you like for giving you the opportunity to view this here, for free. Contact me for my Pay Pal info.

If you are interested in the two ladies (who I believe stand about 9 feet tall each, if I’m gauging the scale here properly), I’m including a video from them after the jump Read more »

Sister Silhouette: Again From The Archives

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on August 22, 2009 by ssstephg

never officially titled but today I’m calling it “Sister Silhouette” which may or may not stick
48 x 36″ (aka 4 x 3 feet)
oil on panel

So this is the painting I mentioned earlier. It has existed in this state for a couple of years, but I dunno, I may work on it more at some point. Til then, I s’pose it will continue to molder, face to the wall, in the corner of my studio. Oh yeah, and it’s a self-portrait. Some of you may recognize those pretty pink and blue pills floating around the halo as Depakote and Wellbutrin respectively. If so, I feel for you. It ain’t no fun poppin’ pills when it’s this particular Rx. Or maybe it is–everyone’s different, right?

I Made This 7 Years Ago

The sentiment still stands.

She’d Heard Them All 1000 Times

Posted in Art, Photography, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , , on July 1, 2009 by Toni Tiller

This week I was playing with the scanner again, and at first I was experimenting with more natural materials, but to mixed ends. I might post some of the more successful of them anyway even thought I am still working on them, but before that I’ll post this one. Of course with my addiction to narratives this one told me a story right away, I just had to sleep on it to find out what it really was and I had to truncate the title that was in my mind to keep it from becoming too imposing. As it is it may already be. As usual, all comments and crits welcome.

Protecting Intellectual Property

Posted in Art, Photography, Toni Tiller with tags , , , on June 10, 2009 by Toni Tiller

This is from about a year ago, but I find it relevant to current situations, am I trying to keep things on the inside protected, or keep the outside from getting in? Changes from day to day I suppose.

Either way, later on this afternoon JD Hastings might treat us to a re-mix.

More Interpretations

I got my new camera but am still working it all out so until then here is another Bennett/Tiller, and looking back I think this may have been the first. I’ll be down in the subway this weekend and am eager to see what I get, but for now here is Echo.

A New Take On An Old Idea

Posted in Art, Photography, portrait, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on May 18, 2009 by Toni Tiller

We’ve all seen those “a photo a day” projects where someone takes the same posed image of themselves everyday for whatever length of time, but here Russell Higgs adds a little something new to the mix by adding objects to his head. They are frequently things we all just have lying around the house, but his combinations and use of them often makes for surprisingly stylish results.

I’m going to be on a plane all day tomorrow though, so I’m going to post my first self portrait in a long time now.
