Strawberry Letter 22 or 23

Here are just a few recent life drawings done on the MTA, the NYC subway. I take the D, N and R lines to and from Brooklyn and Manhattan; most of the sketching is done at night on the train from Rockefeller Center in Manhattan to Sunset Park, Brooklyn. I have a smallish sketchbook right now, about 8″ x  5.5″. The  challenge is to draw the subjects quickly and hope they don’t catch your eye. That kills it.

I grew up 70 miles from NYC, in the rural town of Ridgefield, Connecticut. I started visiting Manhattan from the age of 2 or 3, driving down the Saw Mill Parkway with my parents as my father delivered art to the publishing houses who hired him to do book cover illustrations. One of the main clients was Pocketbooks, a division of Simon & Schuster, whose offices are on 6th Ave, right across the street from the subway station I use now every day.

The music that speaks New York to me is particular and special to my history of NY as visitor then a 25-year resident. The attached song by the Brothers Johnson will forever conjure up trips to New York in 1978 that invariably ended up with bar-crawling, party-crashing and public debauchery.subway 3-27-13 a

New York is Tough

I’ve lived in NY city for a long time and have experienced this city through many crisis both natural and man-made. It may sound like a cliche but I have found it absolutely true: NYers are  best when circumstances are worst. Hurricane Sandy, the most destructively powerful natural disaster in recorded city history slammed the the northeast causing devastation through the boroughs, not to mention the whole tri-state area. Fear and destruction played out through the last several days but individuals steel through it.

Below is a photo I took several blocks from my house in Brooklyn, as the storm was slowly heading towards us.

Below is a monotype I made later that night, as the city was flooding and i was fortunate enough to have electricity and a dry house.

summertime laziness

Posted in Art, art on paper, Drawing, laelia e. mitchell, MOMA, work on paper with tags , , , , on June 25, 2012 by laelia e. mitchell

as with all summertime seasons since i was a munchkin, my efforts to stay focused and carry on with ideas and projects get sidelined by bicycle rides and visits to farmers markets and all manner of warm weather exploits.  i ultimately find these activities enormously vital to my art making life, as they help to clear my mind from the minutiae of unimportant shit.  these seemingly unrelated to art making pursuits inform my visual dialogue almost as much as museum visits.  last week i was in NY and went to MoMA and saw some inspired work … came home rode, my bike to the studio and on that ride a particular idea evolved.  so people … if you think the summertime fun endeavors you undertake take away from your art practice … think again  ….

It’s Been Awhile

I haven’t done one of these subway abstracts in quite awhile, mostly due to the fact that I rarely take the subway any more. Last week my boss called me into the office and I found myself back on the G line, my old home away from home. I was sorry to see that in the last year the city has finally taken an interest in the G and there were very few dilapidated billboards where there used to be plenty. I went home with a grand total of 5 images, none of which I was overly in love with while shooting, but in uploading I found this friendly face.

I like him alright, but in the process of looking at the images I realized I had lost connection with whatever process I used to use to make these. I felt a little rusty, so this may not be my best, but it felt like good exercise.

Like Any of My Shit is that Important: Matisse, Monotypes and Moma

I ran over to MOMA ( the Museum of Modern Art, for all those neophytes) the other night and zipped right in with a membership card through the thousands of tourists and what seems like -every friday night at MOMA- a holiday weekend at JFK. I visited a great show from their Contemporary collection, and a mind-blowingly large retrospective of Henri Matisse. Among the intense range of his paintings and drawings from his years in Paris, Morocco and Nice were some monotypes which he obsessively did for several months in 1914. He made 70 that year, 10% of his lifetime total. The simple, rich, heavy, flat yet deep black with contours drawn to reveal stark white lines against said black were powerfully elegant.

I came home and played around with the black that I had drifted away from. Here is a figure I made using tools like a screwdriver, pencil, knife and razor blade. I’m also including a related but tonally very different image, one from a series made with india ink, pencil and letraset ink on paper.

Virility, Sterility, Puerility. Andro Pause is Coming to Town.

I’m continuing this series of the male figure. Here’s a new word I came across: Andropause. I find this an amusing attempt by some to excoriate the more complex feminine process of midlife aging. As a member of the male gender class, I admit we are the weaker sex emotionally, psychologically and, considering our place in the biosphere, physically. Lets face it, men are deep down scared shitless. That’s why we bluster and play the the macho door-busting hero. The Male mid-life crisis might as well be call boyopause.

Gratuitous Laziness

I’m a contradiction. I work very hard and I am lazy. I have a deep desire for luxury and comfort: whether its an old drafty shack on Cape Cod or a Parisian 5 star Hotel, as long as I can sleep and play the lay-about. Until, of course, my buried catholic-induced guilt and Swedish-bred work ethic kick me in the ass.
Here is a monotype in a series of self-portraits as a beached ne’er-do whale.

Peruvian Gold

Posted in abstract, Art, Photography, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , , on December 9, 2009 by Toni Tiller

Sometimes I go back through old files of unused pictures and see something new, and that’s pretty much what happened here. I was working on something else entirely and this one just happened to be mixed in, this little landscape was just a small section of a much larger all and it almost slipped past my eye. I’m glad it didn’t because I kind of like this one.

I’m Learning Photoshop (Very Slowly)

Posted in abstract, Art, Photography, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , on November 18, 2009 by Toni Tiller

I don’t have a very good grasp of technical things. I have a camera, and even though the whole aperture/f stop/shutter speed thing has been explained to me about 4000 times and it all makes perfect sense while it’s being explained it goes clear out of my head as soon as 3 minutes passes. It could appear to be willful, but I am also the same person who took algebra 3 years in a row and failed every year and then spent my senior year in remedial math learning how to move a decimal point. I got a C and I was thrilled. I’m not sure why but certain types of information just won’t stick, while other seemingly useless information rattles around in there forever.

I’m not much better with Photoshop (layer? what’s a layer?) but I am hoping that it has less to do with a techno block and more to do with lack of repetition in applying what I have learned. Today I took an image and split it in two to make a diptych. Granted, I had to refer to the notes Mr. Hastings thoughtfully wrote down for me (last March), but I still did it and I am pretty excited. I don’t know if I am finished working on this, but it’s finished enough for now. Maybe next I will re-learn the coloring lesson I got the other day, expect finished results sometime in 2011.

Jeff Youngblood Exhibit NYC: Reception Oct 26

Missouri artist/gallerist and d’Arte Board friend Jeff Youngblood is exhibiting a fun new series of paintings at Spina Restaurant in the East Village.  Visually, the work is an exploration of bold blocks of layered pattern and texture rendered mostly in flat dimension, punctuated  occasionally by areas of thick drippy paint and found images.  There will be a reception with the artist Monday October 26 from 6 – 8 pm at Spina.   Partial proceeds from art sales will be donated to Mwangaza International, a charitable organization that helps to rescue and rehabilitate child soldiers who have been kidnapped and ravaged by the war in The Congo.  A good cause, free wine, hors d’ouevres, great art and fun people–it should be an awesome night!  Hope to see you there!

Getting On The Couch

Posted in Art, Photography, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , , , on September 23, 2009 by Toni Tiller

A few people have seen this back when I first made it and wasn’t sure what I thought of it. I’m still not sure what I think of it, but I am sure that I need to post something new today.

Being unsure seems to be a general theme for me in recent weeks. I am unsure about what I want to work on, or if I want to work on anything at all. New ideas seem good while they are fresh but then when I sit with them a bit they begin to fray and I reconsider, some of them are labor intensive and I’m uncertain what role that has in my ambivalence when time for large projects is scarce. I make images because they help me feel connected and as I move through a period of tautness I wonder how much I have left over to give to that, how much do I really feel like sharing at the moment? It is more appealing to go into a bubble and I wonder how much of the urge to withdraw and recharge is genuine or am I just being a big chickenshit? I’d rather get lost in mindless physical activity, move boxes, clean toilets, dig holes in the garden, anything except think about art. Did I mention that I wasn’t breast fed as a child?

I see we are out of time. Same time next week?

I Almost Forgot Myself There

Posted in Art, Photography, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , on July 8, 2009 by Toni Tiller

This is one of the most simple compositions I’ve worked with in this series, but one of the more complicated ones in my head, it’s based around several conversations I had over the week all connecting in one place. That is all I have to say about it for now.
