Span of Sunshine on The River Sunday Night

Posted in Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , on May 1, 2009 by ssstephg

Span of Sunshine = lovely music made by lovely people.  I know this first hand because Span spends most Thursday nights practicing in my basement.  The band of four Western Mass musicians–Steve Koziol, Dan McGrail, Hilary Weiner and Mark Bodah (live)–just recorded a radio spot for WRSI The River‘s Sunday night show “Turn It Up Til Eleven” hosted by Roger I’m still waiting to be informed of his last name.  The show airs Sunday nights from 9 – 11 pm.  The Span broadcast is scheduled for this Sunday, May 3rd.  It will include an informal interview with the band members and a few pared down versions of Span songs that were recorded last night at the station.  WRSI broadcasts to New England’s  Pioneer Valley 93.9 FM and Brattleboro, VT 101.5 FM.

Span of Sunshine’s debut album “This Must Be The Present” produced and engineered by Norm DeMoura at Harmonium Studio, Haydenville, MA is available for purchase online at CD Baby.

Span of Sunshine on Myspace

The band’s website ( in need of an update)

A short description from The Daily Hampshire Gazette on gazette.net May 8, 2008:

“Span of Sunshine is the latest project from onetime Dingo Roi guitarist/vocalist Steve Koziol, and the quartet is yet another indescribable quirky pop band that works weird magic with harmonies and arrangements. If you’re a fan of The 5th Dimension, The Free Design or The Negro Problem, “Waiting for No One” will make you very happy, while more electric songs like “Radish” might be just what old XTC fans are jonesing for. Koziol is no doubt working hard on the band’s magnum opus debut, but until it exists as an object you can proudly blare in your car (or download as a file), your only chance to experience Span of Sunshine in full-frequency fidelity is at the Rendezvous in Turners Falls on Saturday at 9 p.m. They’re a great band.”

Right so, go give a listen.

Friday Night Music Post

Posted in Art with tags , , , , on April 24, 2009 by jdhastings

Back in our old Myspace Group hangout, the World Artist’s Network we had a friend named Joey Thibault.  It is impossible to explain the joy that Joey’s unique brand of insanity brought to us all in this small space, so I’ll save its own post.  Joey kind of disappeared from online a while ago, but he left the group one of it’s most enduring threads, The Friday Night Music Thread, wherein each friday people would post beloved, hilarious or otherwise inane music videos to celebrate the coming of the weekend.

In Joey’s honor, we’ve decided to bring a form of that to d’Arte Board to help kick off the weekend while sending a psychic shout to a ^^an dear to our hearts.

Happy Friday, everyone.

A Tribute To Stevie Wonder…’s Guitarist

Posted in Art, J. D. Hastings, news with tags , , , , on February 26, 2009 by jdhastings

Last night, February 25, 2009, Barak Obama rightly honored Stevie Wonder for bringing untold amounts of awesomeness to Earth.

The entire performance will be broadcast at some future date by PBS.

On it’s own, that would be worth reporting, since there have been few musicians as influential or important in the late 20th century as Stevie. Hip hop, R&B and even Rock wouldn’t be what it is today without his work from the early 70s.

However, I am posting this as much from a personal indulgence as a worthy tribute. You see, the goateed guitarist standing over Stevie’s right shoulder as he performed last night happens to be my good friend, Errol Cooney.

R.I.P. Lux Interior

The Cramps were a huge part of my Jersey teen years, a band who’s sound and aesthetic paved the way for the legion of rockbilly disciples that exists today. They did it way back when this kind of retro was just not cool, and they did it with their own psychotic edge. Unfortunately Lux Interior passed away last night of a pre-existing heart condition in California. I have a lot of fond memories of him in a vinyl cat suit and a pair of stilettos destroying himself at City Gardens (Shitty Gardens for those in the know) and though I haven’t seen them play in years I will miss his warped and fearless spirit. The world needs more Lux Interiors.

Musical Veggies by Heita3 on Youtube

This fabulous gentleman makes musical instruments out of food–mostly vegetables. On his Youtube channel, you can watch and listen to him performing such delightful tunes as “London Bridge Is Falling Down” on a Carrot, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” on a pepper and “Silent Night” on a daikon radish. The vid below features his stunning rendition of “Angels We Have Heard On High” on a broccoli.

Here’s his own description as an introduction:
A big broccoli ocarina can have been done. The tune is “Angels We Have Heard On High. ” My wife is accompanying it.

If you enjoyed that, you should really check out the rest of his videos. There are over 40 in all, including an instruction vid for making your own carrot ocarina. In some of the performances he’s also accompanied by his adorable little daughter. Great stuff!!!
