I’m working on some new stuff for a show next month
But here’s an old collage I’ve been thinking of a lot lately while working on quilt piece for the show.

I’ve wanted to try this for a while to get some fabric printed with my characters in the pattern. The pattern doesn’t match exactly, but close enough. I’ll probably just have a swatch printed with this exact pattern. I’ve had some fabric printed with monster faces before, that I made into dolls, but not an original drawn pattern. I’ll have to experiment more with.

Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital, Drawing, Illustration with tags drawings, Illustration, monsters on August 9, 2010 by Daniel Allyn LeeThis week, I started to concentrate on embracing my weird a bit more. I think, I need to stop editing my ideas, trying so hard to be cute, funny or clever. Maybe its not a perceivable difference to anyone but me, but I’m really digging it and will probably continue for a while.

I ordered some new pens and I think they are helping me remember to vary my line weight.

drawing a day
Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, Drawing, Illustration with tags Art, Illustration, line, monsters on July 5, 2010 by Daniel Allyn LeeIn an effort to become better at illustration I’ve decided to commit to making at least one drawing a day for the next year or more. If I get stuck on what to draw, I’ll randomly select a word from the dictionary. I plan on posting my favorite drawing once a week online.
for this drawing the word was ‘eleventh’.

dance party
Posted in Art, art on paper, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, Illustration, Painting, work on paper with tags Art, Collage, Illustration, monsters on June 14, 2010 by Daniel Allyn LeeWell, I did my first craft show last weekend. It was fun but it rained a lot and I didn’t sell as much as I’d hoped. This last week I’ve been doing a little relaxing, organizing stuff, taking pictures and listing it on etsy and putting together some shipments to a couple of consignment shops. Now, I want to make some art and try and write a story book.
Anyway, here is something I started a while back with plans on finishing for the show but instead I finally got to today.

monster talk
Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, Illustration, Painting with tags Collage, Illustration, monsters, paint on April 12, 2010 by Daniel Allyn LeeThis, I started a few months ago and I just decided to put the finishing touches on it yesterday. I think its funny. the background got a little dark on me. I’m definitely running with this collage, acrylic, illustration combination. I think, I just need to get comfortable with it and loosen up a bit.

Monsters rule!

I’m tired of being conflicted about working on character illustrations. I like it and I’m going to concentrate on it. I think I gained a snobby attitude about illustration back in college, where it seemed really important to differentiate art, design, and illustration with very clear lines. I think I’ve been a bit self conscious about not making ‘serious art’. I think you can make really interesting art using more populist themes. lowbrow, pop-surealism, reduced figuration, or whatever ya call it…
This painting was a little experiment in reusing a segment cut from and old painting in a new way. I think the characters are a bit stiff and the composition stinks, and it could use more dry brushing and washes in the background, but the colors work and I see potential. I’m calling it a first pancake and moving on.

Instead here is a drawing I did last week. I was experimenting with colored pencils on top of an acrylic wash and ink. It turned out better than I expected, but I don’t think I will be using colored pencils for anything other than sketching for now on.

Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, Illustration with tags cartoon, Illustration, monsters, zine on August 3, 2009 by Daniel Allyn LeeI’ve finished my second version of a cover for my Monsters zine. The first one was far too simple featuring only one sad monster, so I decided to beef it up a bit.

I think, I’m finally finished with the whole thing, other than some final proofreading and minor tweaking here and there. I should have a few copies made sometime this week. I already have plans for my second volume, which will utilize my preexisting character descriptions and some new sketches.

I decided to put them together with some other stuff into a little monster themed zine thing. I’m hoping it will be funny and cute. Here’s one of the pages.

Also, an update on that fabric I ordered last week. It already arrived! Man that spoonflower.com is fast. The colors did shift a little bit but that’s kinda why I went with primary colors, anyway.

monsters of my youth
Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, Painting with tags circles, high school, monsters, old old art on June 8, 2009 by Daniel Allyn LeeI just finished making a big ol’ pile of dolls and plush toys, and photographed them. I’ll be editing and uploading the pics for a few days. Its a lot of pictures and I have a pretty slow internet connection.
I also need to start working on a bunch of monster related art for an upcoming show in St. Louis in August. Which kind of makes me laugh cuz when i was starting to become interested in painting back in high school all I did were monsters; they were terrible overly dramatic dreck, but its funny how life comes full circle.
I happen to have pictures of a couple of them.

Hopefully, the stuff I do in the upcoming week or two will be better than these, but who knows.
