final monster WIP

Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, Painting with tags , , , on June 20, 2011 by Daniel Allyn Lee

I’m only calling this a “work in progress” because there are still a few small tweaks and touch-ups to do here and there. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. I wish the purple in the lines would have come out more; they really look black unless you look at them in the right light. Otherwise I really like the colors.
I will definitely be making more paintings like this soon; although, they will all probably be smaller.

Just got done, this last weekend, with an arts and crafts fair. I was busy the last month preparing for it. It went great and I had fun, but I’m also glad its over. Now, I can work on some paintings; I’ve been staring at this roll of canvas for a month in anticipation. I did start a painting last week, that I was hoping to get done to use at the fair, but I didn’t have time to finish it. Now that I do have time, I’ve changed my plans a bit for it and hopefully I will post some finished pics soon. For now, here’s a couple WIP shots:

monster painting

This is one of the pieces I did for the Meth & Hot Dogs 2 show at Lift designer toys and gallery in Royal Oak, Michigan, which is near Detroit. It opened on Saturday and from the photos it looks like a great show with a fun opening.

This is a little more straight forward then I plan on working on in the immediate future, but I like it. I just bought a bunch of canvas and stretchers, and after a craft fair coming up in may I plan on concentrating on painting more. Til then, its sew, sew, sew, monsters, monsters, monsters, with maybe a little sketching in between.

I didn’t really have anything new to post this week until I remembered this. Here is the image I submitted to the latest edition of Brown Mega Corp. arts newsletter.

I was inspired to try using the preview/detail photos by Steph to make a monster digital collage. The colors are a bit on the dark side, but I think it works. One of the drawings I used is an interior a tavern. I also included a sketch of some beer steins, just to be silly. (I didn’t get Steph’s permission to use her photos; I hope she doesn’t sue me.)

I think, I’m getting closer to what I want to do and where I want to be with these. Next, I want to use this particular approach in a painting, a paper collage, and maybe a quilt and see where it goes from there.

test dolls

I made a couple test dolls. One of which is a custom mighty muggs monster; I got a bunch of blanks for cheap recently. The second is a Wizard I made from scratch using polymer clay, fabric, and batting all on a wire armature.

With the monster I wanted to try out my paint on, and gluing pieces onto a DIY doll like this. Its sort of like a munny, but by Hasbro. Then, with the wizard I wanted to try making a doll like this. I wasn’t too concerned with how he turned out I didn’t really do too much planning on him. The sculpting is pretty basic but he’s kind of cute. now that I know how thses will turn out I wall definitely attempt more involved designs for both.

buy some paintings

I’ve been trying my hardest to get new items in my etsy store for the holiday season. I finally put some paintings up that I had been meaning to for a while.

monster family study

A recent study on monster families concluded that the majority of them get along better than human families. If a disagreement does arise someone usually gets eaten alive so monsters just try to get along.
Here’s another study painting; some fun with color and a simple circle pattern.

I’m working on about five new paintings for a small show in Ohio this October. These are a couple sketches for them. I wanted to do a few small grouping of monster and them a couple of the paintings will have large crowds of them. All of which will be surrounded by plush monsters on the wall.

I’ll post some of the actual paintings when they are finished.

I’m still working hard on stuff for the upcoming craft show, I’ll have a booth at. This is just a fun lil sketch I decided to play around with in the computer. I’m hoping to concentrate a bit more on drawing and writing after this show next month.

This sketch reminded me of something so, I decided to add the star and red background on the compooter to kind of play it up just for fun.

here’s another monster. I was concentrating on the composition and using collage with paint for this one. He’s not very cute; I think he’s funny. I’m guessing people like cute more than funny, but whatever.

another cartooney drawing

monsters
Here’s a fun little drawing of a group of monsters, drawn in ink pen and colored on the computer. I’ll probably paint in the original with acrylic washes. Its kind of nice to be able to play around with the color first on the computer screen first. For some reason I love using the halftone filter on the color.

Idol

wooden idol
Here is a peek of the wooden idols I’m working on. They’re acrylic on wood and all around 12 1/2″ tall.  I had three different designs cut and I’m close to being finished on all of them. I wanted them to be brightly colored, with lots of pattern and decoration and have a definite hand-painted look. I was loosely referencing Aztec, Indian, Asian, and Pacific northwest American Indian motifs with these and some other designs, I still plan on having cut out down the line.

Here’s another experiment in illustration. I’m thinking about moving into paper collage and paint soon. Although I still <3 digital.

painted monsters

I finally got those art doll monsters sewed together (well, most of them).  I took a quick snap of them. I used canvas covered buttons for the eyes.  I was thinking of doing some abstract soft sculpture in this same vein, but that idea has evolved into something more, that I don’t want to get into right now.

The art dolls I had planned on posting today still aren’t finished, next week for sure. Instead here is a little experiment combining digital collage and a monster drawing.

I’m not sure if this works that well; it kind of feels like the illustration is just slapped on top off the collage. I need to work on integrating the two more. It is still fun and i really do like the background though.

mixed monster

Teal Monster, mixed media on paper, 9″ x 12″, 2009
I’m doing some experimenting on how to mix painting, illustration, and collage into one big ball of goodness. This is my first effort. I’m rather pleased with it. I will definitely make more of these. I think they could go a little more sophisticated and dynamic; I want to use drawings with more action and/or narrative. I kind of want to go really big with these, but I’m going to hold of on that impulse for now.
