Lilliputian Bedspread

Posted in Art, J. D. Hastings with tags , , , , on March 29, 2011 by jdhastings

These quilts are each 3″ x 3″ or smaller. I need to practice before getting to the major task of quilting and binding the larger quilt I’m making so these are good exercises.

These are bigger on your screen than they are in life. My rush job to scan and editing last night didn’t do them much justice either.

Mini Quilt 1

Not much decoration here, but the binding is hand sewn.

Mini Quilt3

Machine applique, with machine binding.

Mini Quilt 2

My first attempt at hand applique. Not quite circular, but whatever, I’ll get better, and the small size made it more challenging. This will be hand bound but is currently held with pins.

These five paintings (last one after the jump) are all from the February ’07 series I told you about not too long ago.  It’s fun to look back through these and organize them into groupings.  I think these five work pretty well together.  They all have a similar linear  thing going on.

Three Little Gifts

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on July 17, 2009 by ssstephg

The three paintings below were Christmas gifts I made for my lovely friends Carol, Sarah and Christine. They’re kind of a set–both the paintings and the friends. This one’s made out of wax…

Sorta Old, Sorta New, Three Encaustics All In Blue

Marriage never agreed with me, but corny rhymes? Well, that’s a different story. Yeah anyway…

not sure if it’s obvious or not, but the yellow areas are actually a metallic gold.

I seem to make a good amount of fairly inconsequential art, inconsequential in that it doesn’t quite fit in the context of my main body of work. Instead of being a manifestation of any seriously focused ideas or themes, this work tends to be more a record of my scattered ideas and experiments. In this regard, I think of works like these as sketches, and as they accrue in inconvenient spaces, my studio is transformed into a kind of unkempt old sketchbook. Periodically, I go through the mess, filter out the excess and reorganize everything into a more workable space. That hasn’t happened for too long which is probably why I’ve been posting stuff like this lately. I can feel another purge brewing. Maybe I’ll list some of this stuff on etsy.

Random Little Encaustic Stuffs From The Past

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on June 15, 2009 by ssstephg

I don’t think I’ve posted these here yet and they’re not on my website so let’s just pretend they’re new, k?  Alrighty!

encaustic on panel
largest measures something like 2.75 x 3.5 inches
smallest measures roughly 2.25 x 2.25 inches

I made these a coupla years ago and have shown them a couple of times. the first was for the Inaugural WAN Gallery Exhibit. WAN Gallery was an ambitious solo undertaking by the inimitable, and may I say lovely, Tom Brown of Baltimore. It was a brick and mortar gallery which featured work from a variety of artists from around the globe. The gallery is now a fond memory as Mr. Brown, like the rest of the world, continues changing and evolving with the ever forward motion of time. And although I never had the pleasure of setting foot in the door, I believe WAN Gallery was indeed a sweet enterprise while it lasted. The second time I showed these little bonbons was at The Hosmer Gallery in Northampton, MA. And that’s where they sold! WooHoo! $$$ (actually, a cent sign would be more accurate)… ah well. I probably spent the money on awesomely cute but really uncomfortable shoes in a feeble attempt to command a larger presence with a few more inches in height anyhow. meh, “Nothing is forever” said the squirrel. So I let go of my balloon and it floated away.

Steph, Will You Paint Me A Landscape?

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on May 2, 2009 by ssstephg

“No.  I don’t paint landscapes.”

“But you can.  Remember that time when you did that landscape at the beach?”

“Mom, I was 13 years old.  I don’t paint landscapes.”

The above is one of many permutations of what I thought would be a forever recurring conversation between me and my mom.  I love my mom, but I’d rather contract swine flu than paint a landscape.  That said, I presented her with the following encaustic paintings for Christmas about two years ago which proves just how much I love her.  I’m pretty sure these were not what she’d had in mind, but she gracefully accepted the gift nonetheless.

“Landscape For Mom”

something like 5 x 5 inches

“Landscape triptych for Mom”
encaustic on ragboard
each roughly about 3 x 3 inches
