This term was coined in the early nineteenth century by the Romantic Poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He originally coined it to describe the action readers must partake in to enjoy most fiction, particularly poetry, which must simplify or exaggerate reality in order to present it in written form. In exchange for their faith, the reader will be entertained.
