Saturday Morning Cartoons: This Is Not About Self-Loathing (or maybe it is)

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags animation, cartoon, family, grief, humor, love, mother's day, StoryCorps, sweet on May 7, 2011 by ssstephgI love this animation! The dialog is from a Story Corps interview with 87 year old spitfire Kay Wang and her son and grand-daughter. Kay is none too happy about answering her family’s questions, but her answers are very entertaining. She passed away just weeks after the interview and her family returned to record some of their thoughts which are also included. It’s funny and very sweet.

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags 3-d, Art, humor, revealed, secret, stephg, tasteless, technology on April 24, 2010 by ssstephgA new 3-D technology has revealed incredible, never before seen details of old masters paintings. Judging from this video, these new discoveries will likely bring about a broad shift in perspective from both a formal and cultural perspective.
Also, I guess we’re kind of expanding the definition of what constitutes a cartoon here on d’Arte Board. Alrighty. Thanks for the link, Bodart!

How To Vid of the Day: The Japanese Art of Kancho
Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos, video with tags Art, how to, humor, japanese, JuneDidGood, kancho, Sensei Flower, stephg, video on November 28, 2009 by ssstephgFrom JuneDidGood’s Youtube channel:
Kancho is a proud Japanese tradition that has touched millions of people in the birthplace of the Hello Kitty. For years, the sport has remained Japan’s best-kept secret.
Now Sensei Flower, the 39th master of the Clasped Way of the Kancho Clan, unlocks the mysteries of this sport so that more may be touched by its joy of life. The practice is rooted in kindness and love and practitioners will find that doing kancho often will lead one to clarity of mind and bowel.
“Kancho is a gift because it is always a present (pleasant?) surprise.” – Sensei Flower
Okaasan is Japanese for mother. You’ll need to know that late in the vid at the part where he pulls out the photo.

My favorite quote from the article:
“Sometimes you have to go that extra mile to grab people’s attention,” said Campbell, the Met director. “Sometimes it takes more than curating exhibits that bring meaning and context to our complex cultural heritage, more than preserving works of art that capture the spirit of transcendence unique to humankind.”
Continued Campbell: “Next year we’re going to let people grab any masterpiece they like and just take a shit on it.”
Consumer Detritus: Regretsy
Posted in "But Is It Art?", Links, Miscellaneous, Tom Bennett with tags bad art, etsy, humor, Links, Tom Bennett on October 7, 2009 by Tom BennettA huge number of artists and craftspeople worldwide market their handmade creations on the online site Etsy. A lot of it, most of it, like most man-made stuff in general, is crap. Regretsy is my new favorite blog. Some of this is art. Well maybe very little of it is. The rat is kinda tasty.
