Out Of Context: Small Strips Of Paint

Alongside my sculpture, I’m also making making these quick word paintings on strips of really nice scrap mat board. Some are bits of conversations taken out of context. Some are text I made up based on awkward interactions or silent insecurities or the sort of internal dialog that begins when the external dialog wanders into that confusing realm of “Whatever the fuck is going on here I will never understand.” These are sort of like what you might see if you opened one of my journals and I didn’t bust your head open before you had a chance to read a bit. I was inspired, in part, to turn them into paintings by my friend Daniel Allyn Lee who has a real knack for word art. So far, it’s been a fun project for me.

Saturday Morning Cartoons: Animated Paint

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , on February 26, 2011 by ssstephg

As so often is the case, today’s cartoon is not a cartoon. It is, however, art and eye-candy! This video of artist Holton Rower’s process has been circulating around the interwebs for a while now. If you haven’t seen it, take a look. If you’ve watched it but haven’t checked out his website, get clicking! He has a number of interesting projects to see there.

That’s what I’ve been doing. I’m making a fire pit! I spent the week digging the hole and removing the sod. Today, we laid out the landscaping fabric and started laying stones on the patio. Here’s what it looked like this morning.

and a proper soundtrack…

Love & Flames,
-Steph the all-time fire starter cuz i called it first!

Maybe it’s just the state of my life right now, but this is hands down the best damn animation I’ve ever seen. Ever.

KPAO! Art Party in the Park

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 21, 2010 by ssstephg

was a bit fat hit! Even the Holyoke Canal Creature came out for the day!

Remember I told you about how I was organizing an arts festival in our local park?  Well, I did.  And it happened. You may have noticed my unexplained absence last weekend.  Aheh, sorry.  Saturday I was busy hauling tents and tables and chairs and art supplies and answering questions and directing wonderful volunteers and happy kids.  And Sunday I was busy returning tables and chairs and tents and various things and stuff.  And the previous week was spent frantically doing all manner of last minute organizing and procuring and whatnot.   And it was all worth it!  The party was tons of fun and loads of people came and made arts and crafts and listened to music and ate hotdogs and complimented us on the fabulous event and suggested we do something similar every couple of months.  Handmade buttons and origami and BEARDS and painted faces as far as the eye could see!  HATCHAH!  D’Arte Board’s own Toni Tiller  even made a very much appreciated appearance!  Thanks, Toni you sweet little lady!  It was great to see you!  The photo below is of the handful of us leftover after the fete and before the cleanup.  Follow the jump to see more photos from the day!

So what next?  Now that the festival is over, what will become of Kennedy Park Arts Outreach?  Well, we’re going to continue meeting up and being creative, of course!  We have tons of projects we haven’t even begun yet!  We still have dragons and pinatas and juggling sticks to make!  We have more Haiku to write and more parties to plan!  To find out what we’re up to or to get involved, email Artspit@gmail.com.  You can also find us online at the following URLs:

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles: WABU Chibi + High Pollen Count on Shrooms

Posted in Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 13, 2010 by ssstephg

Today’s temporal gallery consists of a trio of sidewalk drawings snuck in between downpours. None of these lasted longer than a day. Such conditions precipitate an itchy trigger finger–Ol’ Quickdraw Gerolimatos–that’s what they call me round these parts. And so, from the growing archive:

Saturday Morning Cartoons: The Melvins Visit Pancake Mountain

Posted in Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos, video with tags , , , on February 13, 2010 by ssstephg

Alright, it’s not a cartoon and the sound quality sucks harder than Punxatawny Phil, but it’s got a puppet, The Melvins (doing karaoke!) and a buncha little kids thrashing to The Melvins.  See now, I was right–even tots love these guys.

Potassium, Balance & Things That Don’t Suck

Posted in Links, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on November 28, 2009 by ssstephg

Like most normal people*, I LOVE bananas.  As part of a balanced diet I eat upwards of four a day.  They’re a good source of potassium in a neat, tidy package.  They come with their own durable, biodegradable wrapping in a lovely cheery yellow and are the perfect snack matrix for peanut butter–the greatest food invention ever.  And bonus of bonuses, they come with stickers!  Stylish stickers that will stay in place on your sleeve for days and days.  If you’re a banana fan, you’re no doubt as excited as I am about Chiquita’s recent sticker line expansion–so many delightful new designs!  But have you visited their website yet? It’s a fun waste of time where you can design banana stickers, alter photos and waste loads of time doing other time-wasting nonsense! I’m really diggin it since (due to my lack of balance) I’m all laid up with a fun new injury.

*I realize not everyone loves bananas. I once had a startling conversation about fruit with my pal Karen who I’d always considered normal (ok that last italicized bit is a lie which just proves my point). She explained that her favorite fruit was the orange and that her least favorite was the banana because it’s so inconvenient. She complained about the messiness of peeling them, having to remove the damn stringy bits and pull out the “little black buttplug” at the bottom. Funny thing is, I have all those complaints about oranges… except for the buttplug, with oranges it’s the white bellybutton thing where the segments meet at their ends. And then there’s this nutjob I know from the hardware store around the corner who actually hates bananas. Just goes to show, people are freaks.

Quite normally yours,
-Steph

New Art: A Gift From Mr. Brown!

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , on September 12, 2009 by ssstephg

Remember a couple of weeks back when I posted that awesome colored pencil drawing given to me by my friend, WABU?  Well, WABU’s delightful younger brother, Mr. Brown, came over the other day to paint a Fimo sculpture that he’d made on a previous visit.  ‘Cept he never got around to painting the sculpture because while we were collecting the supplies from my studio to set up a painting station at the dining room table (current studio condition = chaos) Brown noticed a big ol’ piece of nice white matboard.  The lure of a flat painting surface was too much and plans were modified.

Brown didn’t title it but since he gave it to me I’m calling it “Sun Obscured By Sky”.

Check out those expressive brushstrokes!

Thank you, Mr. Brown!

Morph Thing: What Do You Get When You Cross A Rabbit With A Clown?

Posted in Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2009 by ssstephg

Morph Thing is a fun site where you can combine two faces into one–not unlike those science museum contraptions where you and a friend sit on either side of a screen and adjust a knob to see what your children would look like.  You can upload your own photos or chose from a selection of celebrity photos.   Yeah so if Ms. Tiller and I ever decide to procreate we’ll all know what to expect.

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles 7/26

Despite the fact that the rain inches are stacking up at such an alarming rate as to tempt even the most stout-hearted atheist into ark-building mode, we’ve continued to adorn the sidewalk with all manner of temporary ornamentation, and have even succeeded in recruiting a few enthusiastic participants.  We draw while the sun shines.  The rain washes it all away.  The sun returns.  We draw again, ad infinitum (or at least until something more entertaining comes along).

Below drawings by WABU, MarkieB and Mr. Brown respectively.

Even more from this week after the jump! Read more »

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on May 17, 2009 by ssstephg

So we’ve been playing with sidewalk chalk at my place this spring. We doodle on the walk in front of the house and leave the chalk out for passers-by to use if they feel like it. The chalk has only been stolen once. Most people just walk by, but a few people have drawn a little or left covert messages. One day, two of the little girls who live a couple of houses down actually spent quite a while covering our walk with cool drawings of things like clouds and sunshine, cool environmentally conscious phrases and messages about equality. That was pretty rad. Anyway, I decided the other day that it might be fun to start documenting some of these temporary images. Above is a doodle I made and below is one by my pal, Mark.

Hopefully, we’ll convince more people to join in. Stay tuned.

How NPR Ruined My Art Career aka “Crayon Physics Deluxe” Is Awesome!

Posted in animation, Drawing, Links, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , on January 9, 2009 by ssstephg

NPR doesn’t usually interfere with my art making. but tonight, i’m blaming Melissa Block for curtailing today’s studio session. her interview with Petri Purho sent me almost immediately to my computer.

Purho, a 25-year-old independent games designer from Finland has released for sale this week what i’m predicting will be the biggest time-eater i’ve encountered in a good long while. it’s a computer game called “Crayon Physics Deluxe”. the object of the game is to find a way to send a little red ball rolling or flying or bouncing into a golden star. you do this by drawing objects that are then animated and behave according to the laws of physics. you’re presented with ever more complex problems that you must solve with the aid of a crayon and your imagination. the game was inspired by Crockett Johnson’s children’s book “Harold and the Purple Crayon” in which Harold, armed with a purple crayon, draws himself an adventure that comes to life.

the game is downloadable for only $19.95. oh, and i forgot to mention, it won the 2008 Independent Games Festival grand prize. not convinced you want it? you can start by downloading a free demo.

here’s a vid to make up for my poor explanation.
