Quick Painting: Under Water & Short Of Breath

18 x 9 inches
acrylic, purple flocking fiber, red ballpoint pen and graphite on all-rag board

I did this sketch the other day while the paint on what I really wanted to work on stubbornly refused to dry. And although I was irritated at the time, I really do understand. Extreme humidity can suck the energy to do anything out of anyone… or anything. Hell, I was barely able to muster the energy to breathe that day. Gills might have helped, but wearing mine always reminds me of that awful movie Waterworld so I generally keep them tucked away–out of sight, out of mind. Also, I didn’t manage to stay dry myself so how can I possibly expect more from my art? Right. It makes no sense, any of it. Flocking hell.

Art on Paper: Crescent Memory 2

painting by steph gerolimatos
30 x 22.5 inches
oil, charcoal, flocking fiber, gold leaf, collage on archival paper

You ever have what seems like a never-ending work in progress? This is one of mine. I had this up on the wall for literally years. I’d work on it now and then. There was always something I liked about it, but not enough to call it finished. There’s was something missing. Then one day I finished it in maybe a half an hour. And here it is. All done.

I’ll post some clickable detail pics after the jump so you can get a better idea of what it looks like. Shrinking it down to 500 pixels kinda loses much of it’s point. It’s a work on paper but there are lots of textures and details that just get lost in the repro. Read more »

Five Minus One Is Still

“Five Minus One Is Still”

Here’s another one from a while back. I worked on this one at the same time as and finished it shortly after the one I posted last week, makes sense, huh?  The color doesn’t translate the best in this photo, so I’m including a few detail photos to help convey a better idea of what it looks like in the flesh.  The plexi that’s placed behind the holes has a very slight greenish cast but it’s much more subtle than it appears in the image of the whole piece.  When I took the overall photo there was a warm light coming in the windows behind the painting.  The light caused the plexiglass to look more intensely greenish-yellow.

Five Minus One–More Old Art

From the Surface series:

Five Minus One
acrylic on panel with blue flocking
24 x 24 inches

I tend to gravitate toward verticals when I work so I was a little unsure about how this piece would work out. I half expected it to end in frustration. Surprisingly, it was fun and involved pretty much no struggle!

Sunshine, Pseudopods & Minidramas

That’s the title for another series I’m working on.

Sunshine Pseudopods and Minidramas 4
24 x 18″
acrylic and oil on canvas

These paintings are about gestures and suggested relationships. The work I’d been doing for years had sort of dropped gestural mark-making in favor of all over crunchy textural surfaces that provided a space to feature simple sculptural elements such as a row of nails or an opening in a canvas with contrasting fabric behind it. The color and tone of that work tended to be somber. Ok using the past tense there is a little misleading since I’m actually still working in that vein, too. I can’t seem to close veins, just open new ones. That being the case, let’s assume I’m using a mining analogy and not referencing human anatomy when I say vein.
