The Life And Times Of Matvey Matveich

I actually worked on some art this week, but not enough to show you all anything. A likely story, I know, but I swear it is true. But in other news I’ll be participating in a show next week (along with Tom Bennett), and I will also be hanging it, and by hanging it I mean pointing at walls and telling sweaty guys to “put that one up there…no, more that way, um yeah. wait. no, lets put it back over here…”

Here’s the run down on the show, a fun idea built around a fictional person.

“DUC presents a pre-launch affair celebrating the Life and Times of Matvey Matveich, with original art pieces and performances.

We found the old suitcase behind an abandoned train station in Stavropol containing an old VHS, a damaged journal, and some bank statements. Upon viewing the tape we realized we had come across the belongings of a very mysterious individual.

Who is Matvey Matveich? Where is he now? Eleven artists, assembled under the order of the grand Duke, set out to discover just that.

Guest List: Co-hosted by Patrick Duffy, Jason Thome, Geoffry Payton, and Fixx Invictus.

Featuring: Alexcalibur, Fixx Invictus, Bretlan Weaver, James Curtright, Jazmine Catasus, Joanne Weaver, Therese + Joel, Toni Tiller, Tom Bennet, Paul Cupo, Gio Black Peter, Emil Martirosian, Nikita Shoshensky.

Live performance by: Alexcalibur, Joanne Weaver, and Fixx Invictus.

Theatre Bar, located in TriBeCa, is Albert Trummer’s cocktail fantasy world where Moulin Rouge meets Death & Co. A true playground for artists, and drinkers alike to meet and create the moments that make New York the extraordinary city that it is.”

Let’s Go To The Movies

Back when I was doing self portraits I got compared to Cindy Sherman about 8 million times, which was initially frustrating because I had no idea who she was, but I suppose later flattering because when I saw her work I really liked it. Anyway, there is a movie about her playing at Cinema Village in NYC opening today and I want to go see it, so if any New York d’Arte Board readers wanna go with me then hit me up.

Links Du Lapin #19

This link combines my love of several things, art, subways, irreverence, and outlaw parties. Improv Everywhere is a group dedicated to causing “scenes of chaos and joy in public places”, and they decided to have a gallery opening in the 23rd street subway. Check it out.

An art collective I belonged to years ago, Blueprint, did something similar about 15 years ago, but instead of treating what was there as art we went down and hung our own. It took about a month of planning, measuring out and allocating billboard spaces to about 25 artists, who then had the rest of the month to make something according to size. Then on the appointed date we swarmed the station with a bucket of wheat paste and a makeshift bar. I can’t say any of the art hung was particularly good or groundbreaking, but we had a hell of a time. Considering the strict vandalism laws it was surprising only one person got arrested and they had to work really hard to get that to happen. I guess if you strip off all your clothes, wrap yourself in paper and paste and then roll around on the hood of a police car eventually they have to give in and arrest you.
