So I was thinking, maybe you’ll have some extra cash hanging around after the holidays and decide you want to invest in some art. Well, the age old medium of encaustic would certainly be a great place to start, and I just happen to have a bundle of lovely little encaustic paintings for sale in my Etsy shop here. Prices are very reasonable, too! Nothing over $300!

Or maybe your budget is even less elastic and small gestural paintings are really more your thing. I can help you in that case as well. I have a second Etsy shop where the price limit is currently $25 or less! Wow indeed! You really can’t beat that.

In case you’re curious, most of the proceeds from the sales I make will be going directly to pay off an ever-expanding vet bill. My feline companion Stumpy whom I’ve introduced you to in the past has fallen ill, and, as a result, he’s moved in with us. He’s suffering from a disease of the mouth which is apparently not understood all that well yet. That makes treatment a bit hit or miss. At times (like now) he’s in too much pain to even eat. He’s had four teeth removed and the remaining ones cleaned, polished and treated with fluoride. He’s had several courses of antibiotics, a steroid shot and we’re currently trying to manage his pain with a topical opiate we rub into his little ears three times daily. It doesn’t help that he’s FIV positive. So you see, buying art from me right now is like killing two birds with one stone. Add to your beautiful art collection and help out the sweetest little Manx you could ever meet! Really. He even snuggles up against me on his side under the covers for bedtime stories! Stumpy the spooning wonder!

Thanks for reading.

Encaustic Icon: Dead Vespa WIP

6 x 6 inches
hornets and encaustic on cradled panel

Still in progress, this is another in the series of encaustic icons I’m making that incorporate remains of once living things. This one has a couple of hornets in it at present. Not sure what else I’ll add.

So I haven’t made it back to take photos of the exhibit where I’m showing the other two icons I posted here before. Hopefully, that will happen soon because there’s some really great work in the show this year. There seem to be some complications with my foot/ankle sprain combo. For some reason, it isn’t healing properly, and getting around has been tough. But I start physical therapy Monday so wish me luck. Fingers crossed! On the bright side of things, both the snake and the moth icons seem to have gone over really well. I got a ton of compliments at the reception which made dragging my sore, throbbing foot out for the night worth it. And I found out this week that they both sold! Yay!!!

I’ll add a couple of detail shots of the above piece after the jump. Read more »

Encaustic Icon: Lepidopteran Still

Another in the encaustic icon series, this one will probably require more work. There are times when I seem to find dead moths everywhere. Unfortunately, I’ve lost some of my best finds–I’ve somehow misplaced all of my big pale green luna moths and the perfectly preserved face complete with spiral tongue of the Sphinx Moth I found was eaten off by hungry ants. Damn ants always ruining the picnic.

Encaustic Icons: Herpetological Relic

Yup, that’s a tiny little dead snake I found flattened on the road.

This is an example of a series of encaustic works I started a couple of years ago and am about to pick back up. I’ve never gotten around to deciding how to present the work. I thought I wanted to build fancy guilt frames for all the pieces, but at this point I’m thinking that might be a little unnecessary, and maybe I should just stick with something simpler–no framing at all. I’ll let you know when I decide for sure.  There are more in the works.  I think so far I have started pieces using this snake, a moth, a frog and some hornets.

Some of you may be wondering, “What’s with the dead things?”  Here’s the explanation I wrote for my website where I still haven’t posted any of the actual work: Read more »

Round Things Roll (and I roll with ‘em)

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , on September 26, 2009 by ssstephg

So I was looking back through some older photos of art I’ve made and I realized I’ve been on this circle kick for a while now. Here’s a handful of roly-poly stuff.

I gave these two pieces to my friends Christine and Sarah a few Christmases ago. They’re both about four or five inches square (the paintings, not the friends), encaustic on all rag board, plus wire in that second one.

The two below are both encaustic and wire on birch plywood, tiny–about 2 inches square. I gave these to my friends Dan and Shana.

And this next one I gave to my sister, Sam. It’s about, oh… I dunno. Let’s say it’s about 7 Read more »

Prelude to Autumn in Wax: More Encaustic Bites

Four more paintings from the Passing February series. *Three of them after the jump.
3.5 x 5 inches

Technically, it’s still summer for what? Just over a week right? Yeah. Well, as true as that is, I’m just not feelin’ it. The past few days have been downright chilly here in Western Mass. Last night, I snuggled up under a down comforter to keep warm. Pedaling home from a bike ride the other day, I watched a smattering of bright yellow leaves fall to the ground. Crap! I’m not ready for autumn yet! Our extended cold, wet spring barely left time for any serious summer weather. I hardy even had time to complain about the blistering heat! Grrr… I’m angry.

However, in a conscious effort to be a more positive person, I’m attempting to quell my displeasure by concentrating on all the fabulous facets of fall. Lists are useful, right? (Nevermind the growing collection of undone To-Do Lists scattered randomly around my abode.) Let’s make a list!

These five paintings (last one after the jump) are all from the February ’07 series I told you about not too long ago.  It’s fun to look back through these and organize them into groupings.  I think these five work pretty well together.  They all have a similar linear  thing going on.

One more painting after the jump!

Back in February of ’07 I was feeling really beat down by the cold dark oppressive hell of another typical New England winter. What with the craptastic weather, my natural moodiness, and an un-winterized studio I was finding it nearly impossible to get any art made, and of course, the lack of art making just magnified my misery. By the end of January, things were sucking out too hard not to do something about it. Remarkably, in atypical Steph fashion, I made a plan! Read more »

Three Little Gifts

Sorta Old, Sorta New, Three Encaustics All In Blue

Marriage never agreed with me, but corny rhymes? Well, that’s a different story. Yeah anyway…

I seem to make a good amount of fairly inconsequential art, inconsequential in that it doesn’t quite fit in the context of my main body of work. Instead of being a manifestation of any seriously focused ideas or themes, this work tends to be more a record of my scattered ideas and experiments. In this regard, I think of works like these as sketches, and as they accrue in inconvenient spaces, my studio is transformed into a kind of unkempt old sketchbook. Periodically, I go through the mess, filter out the excess and reorganize everything into a more workable space. That hasn’t happened for too long which is probably why I’ve been posting stuff like this lately. I can feel another purge brewing. Maybe I’ll list some of this stuff on etsy.

Random Little Encaustic Stuffs From The Past

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on June 15, 2009 by ssstephg

I don’t think I’ve posted these here yet and they’re not on my website so let’s just pretend they’re new, k?  Alrighty!

encaustic on panel
largest measures something like 2.75 x 3.5 inches
smallest measures roughly 2.25 x 2.25 inches

I made these a coupla years ago and have shown them a couple of times. the first was for the Inaugural WAN Gallery Exhibit. WAN Gallery was an ambitious solo undertaking by the inimitable, and may I say lovely, Tom Brown of Baltimore. It was a brick and mortar gallery which featured work from a variety of artists from around the globe. The gallery is now a fond memory as Mr. Brown, like the rest of the world, continues changing and evolving with the ever forward motion of time. And although I never had the pleasure of setting foot in the door, I believe WAN Gallery was indeed a sweet enterprise while it lasted. The second time I showed these little bonbons was at The Hosmer Gallery in Northampton, MA. And that’s where they sold! WooHoo! $$$ (actually, a cent sign would be more accurate)… ah well. I probably spent the money on awesomely cute but really uncomfortable shoes in a feeble attempt to command a larger presence with a few more inches in height anyhow. meh, “Nothing is forever” said the squirrel. So I let go of my balloon and it floated away.

Steph, Will You Paint Me A Landscape?

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on May 2, 2009 by ssstephg

“No.  I don’t paint landscapes.”

“But you can.  Remember that time when you did that landscape at the beach?”

“Mom, I was 13 years old.  I don’t paint landscapes.”

The above is one of many permutations of what I thought would be a forever recurring conversation between me and my mom.  I love my mom, but I’d rather contract swine flu than paint a landscape.  That said, I presented her with the following encaustic paintings for Christmas about two years ago which proves just how much I love her.  I’m pretty sure these were not what she’d had in mind, but she gracefully accepted the gift nonetheless.

Cells 3
encaustic on panel
10 x 10 inches

I finished this yesterday and photographed it this morning. It’s the newest painting in a series I call “Cells”. The series description from my website:

One basic shape, repeated as many times as fits on a single support, is allowed to vary in size, color and shape. The changes in each cell both force changes in and accomodate for changes in surrounding cells. The overall pattern is enriched by the variation. This is interesting to me both as a vehicle for formal concerns and as a metaphor.

The text is a fairly accurate description of how this series began. The original cell work, though much larger at about 6 feet tall by Read more »
