I’m Back!!

Posted in 35mm, Art, Jason Gray, Photography, St. Louis with tags , , , , , , , on August 26, 2012 by Jason Gray

Not really, but I wanted to take the opportunity provided by a sleepy Darteboard Sunday to announce my new photo venture, Photo Flood Saint Louis.

Photo Flood STL is a group of photographers (currently 50 strong and growing) whose collective aim is to create a sort of photographic map to St. Louis. At our events, we set a map with parameters for where we can wander, and then we go forth and shoot. Later on, the best of our shots are added to the blog. Click on either link to see the results of our first Photo Flood, which took place in Downtown.

Now, back to your regular programming….

Flesh In Pixels

digital collage
Because of things and stuff, I spent far too much time this week. I spent it and now it’s gone. If time were money, I’d be broke. I have no idea what it means in this context that I AM broke. Anyway, as you can see,I fucked around with pixels instead of paint.

columbus day …

Posted in Art, digital, laelia e. mitchell, Photo-Impressionism, Photography, Work in Progress with tags , , , , , on October 10, 2011 by laelia e. mitchell

so this is the day that good ole chris columbus invaded the native peoples lands, brought all manner of disease and claimed ownership of said property.  sounds like our financial industry!  so in honor of that, i’m going to close my bank of america account and find a credit union, get outside and embrace my liberation … and not celebrate columbus’s rapacious ways.

This is a little digital sketch I made by screwing around in Photoshop with a scan of a pretty autumn leaf. It ain’t Hokusai but whatever. I think it’s kinda pretty. I think YOU”RE kinda pretty!

That’s all I have to say.

end of times

Here’s something I was messing with this week. I think it turned out alright. Of course, what does it matter, the world will be gone in a couple years anyway.

Digi Wooly Willy

Remember Wooly Willy, the magnetic toy where you picked up the metal shavings and used them to draw hair all over Willy’s face? Man, I loved that game! I actually found one a few years ago and still play with it sometimes. Well today I got wondering if there were a digital version of Wooly Willy, and lo and behold, of course there is!  FreeLancerFox has a version in his Deviant Art gallery.  I also found a Wooly Willy application at Paze Interactive that’s available for your iPhone or iPod Touch.  This second one looks more like the original game.

Have fun!

TOO LITERAL?

unfinished

Unfinished, digital collage, 10″ x 13″, 2009

I’ve been very busy making dolls. I had this piece unfinished on my computer and decided to throw some words on it that I feel are relevant to me. I dunno if it comes across too heavy handed, sickeningly rainbow colored, or overly-literal but I don’t have time to think about it too much. I gotta go make some toys!

Update on my “Photo-Impressionism” Series

This is an update to a series (part 1, part 2) of photographs that I have been working on since December of 2008. Though “Impressionism” may no longer be an appropriate term for this series, I’ll continue to use it to refer to my previous photos already described under this moniker. In any case, I am making some progress in building a mechanism to make taking these photos portable, and these latest few are testament to that progress. In the meantime, I have also failed over and over again in trying to align my means with my goal. Hope you enjoy these; please view them as stepping stones.

things I’ve done before

Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital with tags , , , on May 4, 2009 by Daniel Allyn Lee

I was working on a new collage. Well, a reworking of an older collage that would result in a new digital collage, but it just isn’t coming together yet and I want to spend more time with it.  So, I’m a bit late today in posting an old piece.  New work next time, I hope.

Distortion: recalling André Kertész

Posted in Art, art on paper, figurative, homage, monotype, Photography, printmaking, Tom Bennett, work on paper with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 30, 2009 by Tom Bennett

I was thinking of the hungarian photographer André Kertész, when I was pushing the ink and paint around. He made a series of distorted nudes, inspired by the properties of water on the human form, but using mirrors to metamorphicize the figure. My father Harry had a book of these photos and I recall first browsing through it as an 11 year old.

I’m playing around a bit with the word art thing. I’m not sure how long I’m actually going to stick with it. I think I need to switch to paper collage for these. Digital is great and has a lot of possibilities but I think taking the time putting together a paper collage gives them more weight in comparison. Its kind of like the difference between a handwritten note and an e-mail.

trying out some words

So, here’s my first stab at some new word art. I wasn’t sure if I would use found phrases or the more snarky comments from my old pieces or write new stuff. So , I’ve decided to do a mix of everything; try out a bunch of different approaches. I went with the collaged together, ransom note style for this first collage. I like the connotations of anonymity it gives, like the statements are meant but not owned. I think I have to resolve how the imagery in these is going to relate to what’s written, but I think that will result in some fun experimenting that I’m really looking forward to.

Urban Art Awakening

I was recently included in this event at the Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Art Gallery in St. Louis. I have no idea who else is showing, but it was juried by Kate Poss of Art St. Louis and Washington University, so I expect that it should be interesting. I won’t actually be in attendance for the opening, but I am thinking about sending my brother down there to stand in. If anyone makes it there, please let me know how it went.

Primitive Mythology

primitive mythology
Primitive Mythology, digitally altered paper collage, 10 1/2 x 14 in., 2009

This is an old collage that I reworked on the computer.  Even though it includes a little text its not part of my planned series of word-art pieces. I also changed the title of the piece. Its in reference to something I heard Deepak Chopra say on Nightline last week.  I thought it was amusing, but hope its not too offensive to anyone.

The hand is from a photo of my own hand after I nearly cut off my finger whilst de-pitting an avacado.

I like the way this piece turned out.  I went down the crossdresser road on a whim and I probably won’t make it a reoccuring theme, but it is what it is.  I was really happy with the way the background turned out.  It was kind of an experiment in its self, one that I will have to try again.

backpedaling promise
Backpedaling Promise, paper collage, 5 ½ x 7 ¾ in, 2008

This is the first collage in the series of figurative pieces that I’m currently working on. It was made back in June of this year. I think the themes of the series are basically man, masculinity, and nature.

I had done a series of digital collages based on mythological figures the previous year. Its kind of interesting to compare.
