WIP – My Yard

Posted in Art, design, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on June 8, 2011 by Toni Tiller

I’ve been busy busy busy lately. My friend has decided to get rid of one of his houses and invited me to raid it for plants/rocks/supplies and since all those things, especially plants, are expensive I’m going to happily take him up on it. What it means is I spend most days right now loading up The Pig (my Chevette) going over to his house digging up plants and rocks and moving them to my house. Repeat.

So far I’ve moved about 60 plants, and I probably have another 70 or so to go, and since this doesn’t leave a lot of time to cut paper and make collages I am going to label this a design project and post it here. Title – My House, Size – 2.25 acres, Medium – Mixed Media.

This is my little cat house, which I have posted on Twitter before, but it’s had some changes and has now been landscaped with some variegated shrubs and a lot of Hosta, which hopefully the deer won’t eat. I swapped out the previous “deck” for a more natural wood plank. I’m thinking a few more plants and rocks, and maybe a slate walkway leading up to the plank.

This is a piece of woven metal that was gifted to me which I have decided to incorporate as a lattice for some climbing plants and a little Vinca will be coming soon too.

And this is where some new shrubs, Rhododendron and Azaleas were dug in and now I need to make a rock retaining wall along that dark dirt line. Hopefully it will be finished today.

I think Toni might appreciate this. Talk about ambitious paper slicing folk. Kinda makes me want to hone my scissor wielding skizzles.

test dolls

Posted in craft, Daniel Allyn Lee, Painting, Textile with tags , , , , , , , on January 31, 2011 by Daniel Allyn Lee

I made a couple test dolls. One of which is a custom mighty muggs monster; I got a bunch of blanks for cheap recently. The second is a Wizard I made from scratch using polymer clay, fabric, and batting all on a wire armature.

With the monster I wanted to try out my paint on, and gluing pieces onto a DIY doll like this. Its sort of like a munny, but by Hasbro. Then, with the wizard I wanted to try making a doll like this. I wasn’t too concerned with how he turned out I didn’t really do too much planning on him. The sculpting is pretty basic but he’s kind of cute. now that I know how thses will turn out I wall definitely attempt more involved designs for both.

A mixed media study:

10/27/10 nude
ink, graphite, gouache on paper, 10 x 14

….and more stuff about my dad. He deserves it. A fine and fun blog out of England called Existential Ennui(<click in the hyperlink) pays tribute to him and his paperback book art. The blogger, Louis XlV, even mentions our blog.

Psychedelic Sunday

Between working on other things this Sunday I plyed around with photoshop, making designs in designs. These are the fruits of that:

Part of this is idle playing around, but I figure its still more productive than a video game, and allows me to play with some ideas. I’ll post more iterations and the source “drawings” I was using after the jump. Read more »

Super Dorky Supercomputers

Posted in Art with tags , , , on November 30, 2009 by jdhastings

Newscientist has a slide show of the worlds fastest computers today. What I learned from said slideshow is that Oak Ridge Ntional Labratory totally dorks out with its super computers.

This is an image of the current fastest computer in the world. Guess what they call it? Give up? Its the “Jaguar,” and its used by the department of Energy.

Here’s the previous fastest computer ever, now third fastest. It’s called the Kraken, and is used by the National Institute for Computational Science:

Images produced by these badboys follow after the jump.

patterns

Posted in abstract, Daniel Allyn Lee, design, digital with tags , , , , on July 13, 2009 by Daniel Allyn Lee

I opened a new etsy shop. I have so much older art just taking up storage space, I figured I might as well see if anyone wants it. Its nice that etsy lets you run two different shops and it doesn’t cost that much to list. I was going to try ebay, but I wasn’t very impressed with the art I saw there and I already have experience with etsy.
This shop will be filled with mostly art, but I was also considering making some decorative pillows. I made a few quilted pillows for gifts and I really like the way they turned out.  I also plan to get some custom printed fabric from spoonflower.com to make some pillow from.  Here are a few patterns I was considering.  I’m not sure which to try out first.
