I made a couple test dolls. One of which is a custom mighty muggs monster; I got a bunch of blanks for cheap recently. The second is a Wizard I made from scratch using polymer clay, fabric, and batting all on a wire armature.

With the monster I wanted to try out my paint on, and gluing pieces onto a DIY doll like this. Its sort of like a munny, but by Hasbro. Then, with the wizard I wanted to try making a doll like this. I wasn’t too concerned with how he turned out I didn’t really do too much planning on him. The sculpting is pretty basic but he’s kind of cute. now that I know how thses will turn out I wall definitely attempt more involved designs for both.

I’ve been stuck, yes literally stuck what with the humidity, to this chair all week so I haven’t been able to paint. Instead, because it’s been within arms reach (and well, what material could be more appropriate in this sweltering heat?), I’ve been making things with felt. Silly little pins like these, and um, I made some beards…
Yeah, these are totally inspired by Erin’s awesome work at imadeyouabeard. And yeah, this is KPAO! related stuff.
I like the unshorn look. I mean I really like it. I’m seriously attracted to a good beard. Yes, a nice chin curtain is hard to resist. It’ll be practical once winter rolls around again, too.
More beard pics after the jump! Read more »
C’Orque Board
Posted in Art, J. D. Hastings with tags Art, corkboard, craft, J. D. Hastings, woodworking on February 9, 2010 by jdhastingsThis local art co-op I belong to recently asked if I would provide some of my art cards and mini-paintings for them to sell. Obviously I was happy to oblige but after delivering some of them, it became clear that the gallerey and prospective buyers would need a way to display them.
I’m still trying to find a cheap and effective way to attach a tab the cards can be hung by, but did manage to make a few cork boards for the gallery this weekend:
Each framed corkboard is 12″ x 12″
This allows the cards or mini-paintings to be hung without putting new holes in the wall all the time, as well as prividing some flexibility in the size of the pieces displayed, arrangement, etc.
I’ll explain the process of making them after the jump, with closer shots of the corkboards themselves. Read more »
I Made A Crafty Trade
Posted in Art, craft, Toni Tiller with tags Art, craft, gilding, printing, skull, Toni Tiller on July 22, 2009 by Toni TillerA little while back (too long really) our friend Scott, the proprietor of Bellevue Fine Art Printing made an exceptionally generous trade with me for printing one of my pieces. In return I gilded a dog skull with silver leaf that had belonged to him for a very long time, to me it seemed like a more than fair trade and in the end I am rather pleased with the results.
Scott’s company does great work and as an artist himself really understands the needs of the people he is working with, I encourage anyone who needs prints to have a consultation with him.
Oh and Scott, the dog’s in the mail.

Posted in Art, craft, Photography, Toni Tiller with tags Art, chandelier, craft, Photography, Toni Tiller on June 24, 2009 by Toni TillerOk I didn’t have time to make art this week because I spent the majority of it building this enormous chandelier but I think I can sneak this in because not only did I help build it, but I did all the photographing too. So I think maybe it can almost pass as art, craft certainly, and in the end it came in at about 5 feet in height and around 100 man hours total. As far as day jobs go it really is a nice one I think. If you click on the picture it gets really big!
We Like Knitted Things
Posted in Art, Textile, Toni Tiller with tags Art, craft, knitting, Textile, Toni Tiller on May 17, 2009 by Toni TillerIt’s not my birthday, not even close, but if anyone felt like getting me a present I wouldn’t mind one of these demented knit objects by Patricia Waller. I mean really, who among us does not need a fully knitted buffet, a set if false teeth, or an unfortunate accident?

I have no idea what Easter is for but one of my favorite things in the world is playing with eggs. I used to do pysanky which is Ukranian egg dying with wax, but I never did the kinds of traditional designs, I liked stuff more like this, but right now I am intrigued by this method and I thought I would give it a try and let you know how it turned out. Here are two other cool things you can do with eggs, dye them with onion skins, or go to the toolbox and grab your Dremmel and see how steady your hand is.
