In the interest of expanding categories until they become so inclusive as to mean almost nothing, this week’s edition of Sunday Sidewalk Doodles features an artcar I stumbled upon in the Whole Foods parking lot yesterday! The hell’s that got to do with sidewalk doodles you may ask. Welll, the car’s trunk was painted with chalkboard paint and the owner had affixed a container of chalk for anyone so inclined to doodle on the board, and doodle we did! Just a small bit of doodling was done actually. The real point of interest is the car which was decorated in rough glittery pink paint punctuated by puffy, frosting-like script that spelled out sayings like “put peanut butter on your pancreas” and “It’s not who you love but how you love that counts” and “PLUR” and stuff. I suspected the owners might be the handsome stylish young gay couple I noticed in the cheese aisle because of the one’s snappy colorful but understated ensemble complete with stripey socks. And I kinda wanted to wait out in the blazing parking lot to confirm or allay this suspicion, but my chauffeur has even less endurance for such stalker-ish nonsense than I and so the artist/s remain/s a mystery. Now, pics! Enjoy!

The geometric painter, Carmen Herrera, has been painting since the thirties and is finally getting some long due recognition. Read the New York Times article here.
My favorite quote from the article is Herrrera’s response to the idea that her husband who passed on shortly before her career began to take off is up in heaven orchestrating her success: “Yeah, right, Jesse on a cloud.” “I worked really hard. Maybe it was me.”
Right the fuck on.
Oh and thanks to Bruce McD for passing on the link!

New Art: A Gift From WABU! :)
Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags Art, awesome, Drawing, gift, stephg on August 23, 2009 by ssstephgAs I’ve mentioned, our fair weather sidewalk habits have had the unforeseen benefit of introducing us to some of the most entertaining young gentlemen I’ve met in a long damn time. One sparkling gem among these new friends and acquaintances is my pal WABU. WABU is kind, considerate, hilarious, adorable, Talented and Generous! Proof positive of those last two adjectives, I’m now the proud owner of an awesome original WABU drawing which was given to me by the artist earlier this week! It’s away being archivally framed at the moment but as soon as it’s back I’m going to hang it in a very prominent spot. Check it out!
happily,
-Steph
