I Need Photoshop

Posted in abstract, Art, Collage, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , , on February 22, 2012 by Toni Tiller

On my last computer I had one of the oldest versions of Photoshop that it could possibly run, and that was fine because all I ever need to do is cropping and little color adjusting most of the time, no big deal. Unfortunately when I upgraded to my shiny new laptop it decided it wanted nothing to do with that PS7, something about incompatible bits, I don’t know, all I know is it doesn’t work so I downloaded GIMP and figured how bad could it be?

It’s bad. It sucks.

It’s clunky, unresponsive, and doing the simplest things takes forever. In short, I hate it. Scanning work is the only way to get it correctly colored, but then all the magazine dots show up, something you don’t see in person, photographing pieces is superior, but without color correction the look washed out and odd. Today the colors I am presenting are subtle in their interaction, so I chose pixely scanning.

Does anyone want to take pity on me and rip me a copy?

Glimpse of Things to Come

I finally finished the Baudelaire related project I’ve been toiling at the last few weeks last night. I’m not quite ready to post the final images of it though, so here’s just an example of the type of crap I’ve put myself through with it.

This is a crappy stencil of one of the poem’s passages. It’s hard to read, but that’s not it’s only problem.

materials207

The other problem is that “Discontended” is misspelled. I made 10 of these stencils before realizing that. So I then had to create a new stencil just with the corrected spelling. I through in a few “redeems” because that was the hardest word to read throughout most of the stencils.

materials204

I ended up cutting everything apart and sewing the corrected pieces together, but now I have a pile of 20 misspelled “Discondendeds” that I have to find something to do with.

what happens to me when I’m away from the studio

Posted in digital, Drawing, laelia e. mitchell, Work in Progress with tags , , , , on February 20, 2012 by laelia e. mitchell

for long periods is that I forget I’m an artist. I forget I have a creative language and I forget to articulate this language, as evidenced by my lack of anything to share. this is quite alarming. plus I leave tomorrow for a mini vacation …. I also know there’s an element of laziness involved. I’ve made mention of the need to do something everyday … advice I need to be more in line with, clearly. all this said, at least there’s a phone picture to post!

I am taking a sketch book and my oil sticks/graphite case with me. I’m intend (operative word “intend”) to sketch. I hope to forget that I’ve forgotten how to be an artist. I hope to forget that I’ve not practiced my creative language and I hope that this time next week, I’ll have a sketch to share. til then … bon voyage

Just one postcard this morning but I may post more later. I have a few more finished. I just haven’t had a chance to photograph them. Note to self: buy stamps and start mailing these. This one is watercolor, graphite and acrylic on lovely archival matboard.

Incrementally yours,

Nod to Basch

Here I’m publishing the 1st stage – an original monotype – and the finished overlaid painting. Looking at the two images now I can see what choices I would make differently. The energy of the 1st state has been redirected distinctly.

I’m working on some monotypes dedicated to Jeremy Lin, the phenom of the NY Knicks. I hope to post the results later.

With or Without?

Posted in Art, Collage, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on February 15, 2012 by Toni Tiller

I like this springy swirly shape that has come up a few times, and usually I stick with a pretty simple formula, black background with two cut pieces on top in two subtly varying values. Then I thought it might be a good opportunity to deviate in color, use the set pattern to put that part of the thinking aside and focus on the color combinations. In theory this was fine, but when I applied my usual formula it looked a little…what? Too spare? I don’t know, but it just isn’t really working for me.

So I added another layer, and now wonder if it is too busy?

Any thoughts?

I went on a bit of a painting binge last month. The result was a lot of used masking tape. Usually I use the tape to get simple line patterns like this:

But this time I also used the odds and ends to make patchwork stuff like the pieces below. I generally like the effect. These will end up collaged into some quilt some day.

fun and struggles in the studio

Posted in Art, art on paper, laelia e. mitchell, Work in Progress, work on paper with tags , , , on February 13, 2012 by laelia e. mitchell

that’s the sum total of my experiences in the studio as of late.  i go … i draw … i have fun.  i go … i draw … i struggle.  and it’s like that, all the time.  some days the ideas flow with grace and fluidity like it’s a gift from the ether.  other days (like saturday) i draw and i might as well be dumping the cat box on the paper it’s so horrendous.  there seems to be no way i can gauge the day or my temperament.

the drawing below is from one of the studio days that left me feeling like i know wtf i’m doing.  my mark making is developing into some weird language of repetition and movement and it seems to make sense to me.  i used a charcoal pencil then smudged.  i made 4 pages of this.  one page i added a gel medium to each mark and topped it with some oil stick.  i’ll photograph it and share next time.

They Might be Giants

Unless you’ve been having a pedicure under a rock the last few days, you’ll know the football NY Giants beat the NE Patriots to win the superbowl for the 2nd time in 4 years. Without going into an analysis of the season and the game itself and bore most of you, I’ll just say, as a New Yorker, this team is cardiac-arrest-fun with its habit of coming back from the dead and pulling out a win at the last minute.

Mario Manningham came up with, arguably perhaps, the game-changing catch along the sideline. The play was expressionist in its execution.

A Recent Mini Magnet And A Trade

Posted in Art, Collage, Photography, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , , on February 8, 2012 by Toni Tiller

I recently sent out some pieces to my Twitter friend Tim Severson, who has photography, video, and design company he shares with his wife Melissa in Texas. I really enjoy their work and they were kind enough to send me 2 prints (it was supposed to be one, but I couldn’t decide and they surprised me with two) which I am looking forward to hanging. I have the spot already picked out.

and here is one of the mini magnets I sent them.

What’s up, Darteboard? Here are a couple of examples from a photographic experiment that I have been working on.

The Fat and the Thin in the Corner

More paintings made from monotypes. These two pieces I finished a couple of days ago and I’m of two minds about them. The first, In the Corner, may be a tad too defined in the figure. I’m not sure I’m pushing the abstraction enough. The second painting I’m on the fence about as well. How’s that for mixed metaphor cliches?

F-yeah Tumblr!

Posted in Art, Toni Tiller with tags , , on February 1, 2012 by Toni Tiller

I’ve had a Tumblr account for awhile now but never really used it until a few weeks ago, because quite frankly I couldn’t figure out what the fuck it was for.

Is is a blog? I have blog. Actually I have two, so what do I need another blog for? But then in one of my late night fits of insomniatic boredom I started checking out other people’s Tumblrs and things kind of clicked. It doesn’t have to be a blog where I think about stuff, and then write it, and add images and links and whatever…I mean, it could be, it has all those options, but I found myself using it as just a straight image aggregator*. Somewhere to just grab and share images that amuse my brain with no real rhyme or reason, a place to please myself with creepy gifs, art I like, and a shit ton of cats.

*This is similar but different from Pinterest, which is another blog post in itself.

Woven Watercolor Cross

Posted in Art, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , on January 31, 2012 by jdhastings

Last night instead of preparing art for today I ironed shirts. I have no regrets, but I also have nothing to post. I don’t know if I’ve ever posted this before.

doug38
“Woven Watercolor Cross” 2005 It’s like 30″ wide or something. Watercolor soaked through canvas, woven.

This is a woven piece made out of a dropcloth that I used a lot of watercolor on. I then flipped the dropcloth, where you could see where the watercolor soaked through. Toni hates me for this because it’s so light sensitive I won’t allow it out of my closet.

a late post

spending a couple days in the studio this week has refreshed my soul.  even though i didn’t really make any art on one of those days, i was able to putz around and feel that creative movement is steadily chugging along.  it’s really about the little movements towards making work that eventually end up with work getting made.   huh?  well … you know what i mean.  just something everyday eventually gets a big pile of art made.   i have a few drawings done and some canvas on the wall in the studio with a first pass of mars black … where it’s going?  not effing clue
