In the interest of expanding categories until they become so inclusive as to mean almost nothing, this week’s edition of Sunday Sidewalk Doodles features an artcar I stumbled upon in the Whole Foods parking lot yesterday! The hell’s that got to do with sidewalk doodles you may ask. Welll, the car’s trunk was painted with chalkboard paint and the owner had affixed a container of chalk for anyone so inclined to doodle on the board, and doodle we did! Just a small bit of doodling was done actually. The real point of interest is the car which was decorated in rough glittery pink paint punctuated by puffy, frosting-like script that spelled out sayings like “put peanut butter on your pancreas” and “It’s not who you love but how you love that counts” and “PLUR” and stuff. I suspected the owners might be the handsome stylish young gay couple I noticed in the cheese aisle because of the one’s snappy colorful but understated ensemble complete with stripey socks. And I kinda wanted to wait out in the blazing parking lot to confirm or allay this suspicion, but my chauffeur has even less endurance for such stalker-ish nonsense than I and so the artist/s remain/s a mystery. Now, pics! Enjoy!

If you have a chance, stop in and see this show. It’s a quiet little gem–the kind that continues to creep back into your consciousness and alter your internal dialog for days. The title of the show, Call and Response, refers to the musical pattern which consists of an initial phrase or melody followed by a different phrase or melody that acts as a sort of answer or response to the first, much like a conversation. The lines are usually played by different musicians. In this exhibit, Diane Simard has paired 16 visual artists and writers. Each of the eight pairs has created two sets of works, one with a visual call and written response and one with the opposite. Included is a wide range of styles, subjects and media. The works vary from subtle and cryptic to straight-forward and remarkably human. The result is a somewhat eclectic show with a strikingly intimate tone.
Well yeah, you’ve already missed the opening reception because… er, well I meant to mention it before now. Anyway, no sense crying over spilt milk. Now you know and it’s up for a while yet.

Art Church! my favorite kind! Have you seen “Consumed” yet? As promised, it’s a show worth seeing! This Sunday will be a great opportunity to revisit (or visit for the first time) the work before, during and after a discussion with the artists. Sarah Bliss and Petula Bloomfield will sit down, talk about their work and answer questions in a friendly, casual gallery setting. Hope to see you there!
