Consideration in Paint. Consider Painting.

To Whom It May Concern,

painting by stephg
You may or may not recall a post I published last fall with some fairly atypical (for me) work. Well, I’m still making that work, albeit sporadically. These are a couple of pieces from that series that I finished the other day. Both are acrylic on really nice, archival mat board.

When I have enough of these (in about thirty or forty years) I’m going to transform my under the front stairway closet into a gallery, plaster them all over the walls and have a party. Leave your address in the comments below if you’d like me to send you an invite. The postcards are sure to become collectors items in century or so. Trust me, you’ll want one. I’m not collecting addresses to sell. Really.

Sincerely,
Steph

Hues Lost In The Mail

Two more postcards, both acrylic on all rag mat board. I’m going to have to use regular stamps to send these since the board is so thick. The thing I learned, or re-learned actually, from the second card here is that neon does not reproduce accurately in photos. I have these great neon acrylics that I just can’t get to look the same in pictures of the work as they do in real life, damnit.

Long Weekend Itinerant

14 x 11 inches
acrylic on 4 ply all rag mat board

Seeing as this is Columbus Day weekend, I am probably off being very busy picking apples, finding my way through corn mazes and searching out Columbus. In the spirit of the holiday, take a look at this sketch and let me know what you discover. Apparently, it is harboring such delights as a heart, a hematoma, porn, mammal meat, aquatic life, extreme weather, and unholy nods to the birds and the bees. What do you see? Say dead people and I’ll squish you like a bug.

another monster WIP

Here’s another WIP pic of the painting I’m working on.
another wip
I’m not yet decided if I’m going to keep the star bursts white, or fill them in with color. I added them to break up the color a bit, but while I like them in the painting, I kind of miss the impact of all that color and how with the lines it confused the eye.
I’m really hoping to make some paintings that, while using cartoon elements, don’t only elicit the response, “Oh, that’s cute.”

Leisurely Patterned AKA I haven’t forgotten, JD. I’m just slow.

Of the batch of dropcloths I recently finished, this may be my favorite. I don’t have much more analysis to provide.

Sketchy Subconscious Unearthed

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , , on March 19, 2011 by ssstephg

sketch by steph gerolimatos
gouache, acrylic, charcoal and pastel on mat board
16.5 x 10.5 inches

I found this sketch the other day in a pile in my studio. I did it a few years ago and then forgot all about it. When I found it, I was surprised at how relevant it seems to what I’m doing now, but then I figured that’s how things work. I concentrate on one thing while another part of my brain sorts through other stuff. I never know what the hell’s really going on.

With amused acceptance,

Details On How To Stop Chewing On Paintbrushes When You’re Hungry

Above are some detail shots from a few of the things I’m working on right now. I’ve been spending a good deal of time looking at images of food and other stuff with physical properties that induce some sort of something in me that probably adds up to more than would make sense if I tried to explain it in words right now so I won’t try. I have a slideshow of mostly food related photos I play in a loop while I’m painting, and foodgawker.com is fast becoming a favorite destination. As an unexpected perk of this image sourcing, I’ve discovered a few wonderful recipes. This tomato sauce/soup is probably my favorite so far. It makes a perfect sauce for so many meals! Hope you’re all happy and well fed this weekend.

Reflections On The Drying Rack

drying rack
Here’s a photo of paint drying. This is one of the things I’m working on right now. It’s kind of slow going I think because I’m trying out some new ideas. Right now, it’s all still fermenting. I’ll keep you posted as it goes.

WIP: Flaming Pink Hole

Posted in Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , on January 8, 2011 by ssstephg

AaaaaaaaaaaandNo, this has nothing to do with goatse.
painting diptych WIP
Yes, that’s a hole through the center of the top part.  It’s a diptych at this stage, acrylic on cradled panels. And it stands about 40 or a little more inches tall altogether. It may turn out to be two separate pieces. It will look much different in the end. But that’s half the fun of WIPs, right? I guess.

monster family study

Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, Painting with tags , , , , on November 8, 2010 by Daniel Allyn Lee

A recent study on monster families concluded that the majority of them get along better than human families. If a disagreement does arise someone usually gets eaten alive so monsters just try to get along.
Here’s another study painting; some fun with color and a simple circle pattern.

Closed Fist Kiss (an exercise in expanding your imagination)

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on September 18, 2010 by ssstephg

Here’s a detail photo of larger painting.

It’s acrylic on panel. It measures 48 x 24 x 2 inches deep. There are five black shapes that are holes cut through the panel, and there’s black velvet and foam behind the holes–soft and squishy.  Let me provide a little more info to give you a better idea of what the painting actually looks like.  The drop outs from the holes in this one are the masonite shapes floating inside the circle on this painting, and it’s related to this painting I finished not too long ago.  I don’t have a decent photo of the finished piece yet because of technical difficulties. So all I can offer is a handful of detail shots this morning. If by some miracle, I find myself with enough time and energy and light to photograph the full painting this weekend and crop it and readjust the levels in photoshop and upload and post it here, well then, I’ll probably spend that time instead working on getting invites made for my show that opens in two weeks. Aheh, yeah.

Three more detail shots after the jump.

I’m thinking about calling this one “Fruity Five Finger Closed Fist Kiss”

Posted in Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on July 31, 2010 by ssstephg

acrylic on panel
29 x 18 inches

Finished this the other day and I’m pretty happy with it. I showed you details of it recently, and thought at the time that in the final piece the saturation would be knocked down much farther than this. Well, I was wrong.  !  Upon closer inspection of my most recent work, it seems my palette is shifting.  For quite a while, I wasn’t able to call a painting finished until I’d glazed the hell out of it and brought it to a fairly monochromatic state.  As you can see, this is changing.  I wonder if it’s due partly to the fact that I’m now working much more with acrylics and fun acrylic mediums that allow me to simultaneously build dimension AND impart translucence into the paint.  Or maybe it has something to do with environmental factors.  It’s no longer just me and the cats all day.  Our relative silence is now shattered several times a day by veritable tornadoes of young visitors. Maybe it’s just that I’m eating so much fruit. I’ve enjoyed some amazing peaches lately. And HOTDAMN! if cherries didn’t go on sale! You know how I love cherries. Well, Jason knows anyway. I dunno.  Regardless of why, this is where I’m at.

New WIP Up Close/ Fun & Fruity

WIP detail by StephG
detail, acrylic on panel

I’m surrounded by works in progress right now, so I figured I’d post a handful of detail shots today. I often start a painting by laying down highly saturated layers of paint. The final piece rarely ends up being so intensely bright as the initial stages, but it’s fun to start this way and reshape things as I go.

Pazzles Superbun! (A Sketchy Portrait)

Posted in Art with tags , , , , , , on June 26, 2010 by ssstephg

about 8 x 10 inches
collaged pazzle pieces a la JD and acrylic on matboard

I was delighted a few months back when Mr. Hastings sent me a package that included a stash of pazzle pieces, the likes of which we’ve seen in many of his works. I was even more delighted to find among the pieces several silhouettes of our favorite cottontail. Above is one of the collages I’ve made incorporating said lapin.

Whelp, time to hit the bunny trail. I may (or may not) return later with more sketchiness.

Painterly Gestural Sketch: A Good Disembowelling

Posted in Art with tags , , , , , on May 22, 2010 by ssstephg

12 x 9 inches
acrylic on matboard

To me, this one seems very related to the orange nipple sketch I posted previously on darteboard. A friend of mine saw a small image of this and associated it with innards. I didn’t set out to do that but I can see what he meant. Maybe the bodily references are subconscious. Probably. Regardless, painting these makes me happy.
