Black and White Part Two

Posted in 35mm, abstract, Art, art school, Jason Gray, landscape, St. Louis with tags , , , on March 11, 2011 by Jason Gray

In the last two weeks, I have switched from focusing on the small patch of woods in the urban park where I work to the more industrial side of St. Louis. My city is a strange place that still makes things, all kinds of things, from chemicals to jet planes. This reality means that there is a lot of space (most manufacturing centers stopped building up and started building out at least by the 1940′s), and since most of my city’s population had left for the suburbs by the end of the 1970′s, that means a lot of empty space. So “space” is what I have been concentrating on lately (with a few exceptions). Enjoy!

Andy Holman

Andy Holman is a St. Louis-based photographer, whose work has had a big impact on me. I first came across Andy’s art in an internet forum dedicated to Classic Cameras, of which I was just beginning to learn about. His photography has a very quiet, very introspective quality that instantly fascinated me. What’s more, Mr. Holman only shoots film; this, eschewing the popular trend in photography towards digital sensor cameras.  This man is a master of what he does, and deserves some D’ArteBoard love.

A short interview with Andy, and some more of his photos (all are untitled, BTW), after the jump.

Third Place in Contest!

Posted in Jason Gray, Photography, St. Louis with tags , on September 11, 2009 by Jason Gray

The exhibition for the Irv Schankman Memorial Photo Contest, titled, “St. Louis: Through the Lens”, opened tonight, and I was awarded Third Place for a photograph of my grandmother, Dorothy Bergmann. I am both extremely grateful and very excited about this recognition of my work. As for the rest of the awards, Honorable Mentions went to William Stage and Alex Pollitt, while First Place went to Amanda Pfister’s “Carondelet School XIV” and Second Place went to Andrew Raimist’s “Ando’s Ghost: Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts”.

At the reception, I was able to meet and speak to some really inspiring folk from the St. Louis art scene, some were artists and some were supporters. The exhibition will be available to view through December 5th at Gallery 210, and I hope that you’ll go out and see it!

From the printed brochure:
“The Irvin Schankman Memorial Photography Contest Exhibition includes 36 images by 19 photographers, selected from over 400 images submitted by contestants from throughout the region. Contest criteria stipulated that each entry be a photograph of St. Louis taken within the past fifty years, that the work reflect the essence of St. Louis, and that photo enhancement be minimal.

A blind jury process was used to select the 19 finalists and to award the three major prizes of $1000, $500 and $250. The jurors for the 2009 competition are Ellen Curlee, Director of the Ellen Curlee Gallery; Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, Director of the Sheldon Art Galleries; and Bob Little, President of Allied Photocolor Imaging Center.”

I will post some pictures soon!

Happycloud Thunderhead Monsters at Cranky Yellow

The “Meth and Hot Dogs: A Collection of Unscrupulous Characters” show at Cranky Yellow was one part thrift/craft superstore, one part art gallery, and two parts fun!  Daniel’s paintings were hung in a great location with a lot of traffic, and even though we’re biased, they were the show favorites of my wife and I.   Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship was there to perform, which was pretty hilarious and great.  In any case, it looked like a good turnout, and people were having a good time, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if a lot of the work sold before the exhibition comes to a close.  Daniel, we’re planning on going back when there’s less of a crowd, so if there are any other shots that you’d like, just let me know (I figured that you had these each documented, so I didn’t concentrate on getting the paintings individually).  More after the jump.

os2009blogheader

Every year, the Contemporary Art Museum of St. Louis organizes this event that showcases the artwork and working environments of many of the city’s artists.  Emerging or established, they don’t discriminate; you just needed to have moved here before May of this year to participate (I’ll make next year’s).

This Saturday and Sunday, 10am-4pm; the Starving Artist BBQ is on Sunday, from 4-8pm, at the Royale.  Everything is FREE.

A Stroll Through the Park

The largest urban park in St. Louis is Forest Park.  It is where the World’s Fair was held in 1904, and where the city’s art museum, zoo, municipal opera, and history museum all live, among other things.  In terms of scale, it is a bit more than 50% larger than NYC’s Central Park, and a bit less than 75% smaller than LA’s Griffith Park. Big Ass Indie Art and Craft Show

I just found out that I was approved to participate in the above event.  Double-click on the pic for more info. The Mad Art Gallery is one of the most unique concepts (a former police station, with some exhibitions held in former jail cells) in art galleries around St. Louis. I’m looking forward to it, and, if you are in St. Louis at the end of July/beginning of August, you should drop by and see me!

O.k., so I’m posting late this week….In all earnestness, this is not going to be much of a post at all.  I spent this last weekend in St. Louis, which is to be my new home, come May 1st.  From all perspectives, this will be a good move, as it will allow my wife and I to save money, revolve around a smaller nucleus, have more space, do more things, etc.

Nonetheless, this post is centered around the photographs that I took while doing other things, this weekend.  It is image heavy, so be forewarned… Read more »
