Here’s A Project I Am Enjoying

Posted in Art, Painting, portrait, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on June 2, 2009 by Toni Tiller

We’ve seen the photographic portrait-a-day sites (I linked one I liked a few weeks ago) and the painting-a-day sites, and here the two happily meet. Send Me Your Head takes the photos of people’s heads and depicts one a day (maybe) in paint, with the added bonus of what music and literature accompanied the artist while painting. I like the simplicity and polaroid feel they have and am enjoying them immensely, so have sent in my own head for consideration, if you would like to then you can email the artist at kschmidt@sendmeyourhead.com. Here’s a few of my favorites.

Old Man Take a Look at My Life

I made a monotype for my father on his 90th birthday celebration.

It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academicism. There is no such thing as good painting about nothing.

I got my new camera but am still working it all out so until then here is another Bennett/Tiller, and looking back I think this may have been the first. I’ll be down in the subway this weekend and am eager to see what I get, but for now here is Echo.

A New Take On An Old Idea

Posted in Art, Photography, portrait, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on May 18, 2009 by Toni Tiller

We’ve all seen those “a photo a day” projects where someone takes the same posed image of themselves everyday for whatever length of time, but here Russell Higgs adds a little something new to the mix by adding objects to his head. They are frequently things we all just have lying around the house, but his combinations and use of them often makes for surprisingly stylish results.

O.k., so I’m posting late this week….In all earnestness, this is not going to be much of a post at all.  I spent this last weekend in St. Louis, which is to be my new home, come May 1st.  From all perspectives, this will be a good move, as it will allow my wife and I to save money, revolve around a smaller nucleus, have more space, do more things, etc.

Nonetheless, this post is centered around the photographs that I took while doing other things, this weekend.  It is image heavy, so be forewarned… Read more »

Some Attention

I recently had a photograph featured in print for Shore Bride Magazine. The article features information on a client of mine who selected the image. I generally make it a practice to sneak some 35mm shots in on all of my digital shoots, and it turns out that this happened to be one of those! Who says film is dead? Drawing with Harry

My father, Harry Bennett, has been an illustrator and a painter all his life. Over the last year and half he has experienced some physical, neurological and life-style upheavals and he had stopped painting or even drawing. I have been spending more time with him in the last few months and I am trying to coax him back to drawing on a more regular basis. The other day we spent some time doing gesture drawings and blind contours of each other. He was so energized and he loved it.

These are some of his drawings of me. ink on paper:

In With The New

And now everybody get on the Hope Train! Here we’re looking at the art looking forward to the Obama administration.

“Obama Plush” by Bisbee Stitches

To me this is the perfect place to start because America does have a particularly warm and fuzzy feeling towards President Obama, like he’s simultaneously our security blanket and teddy bear (so named after Theodore Roosevelt). With everything coming apart at the hinges, I hope it’s all justified, but for today I’m satisfied to bask in the plush goodness. Read more »

Out With the Old…

So, here we are, President Bush is officially an ex-president, and it’s time for us to consider what we’re moving forward from. Hopefully we will update this over the course of the day, as well as another post celbrating the inauguration and the art of what’s going forward.

But for now, a montage of the past 8 years…

Because I’m using spent masking tape in the art cards I’ll be sending out I thought I’d show one of the first pieces I did in this style. It is a portrait of Jazz Trumpeter, Booker Ervin.
