Another Installment of d’ArteBoard Test Kitchen: All Aboard the Cupcake Cart

Posted in Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on February 20, 2010 by ssstephg

Yes, I’m painting. I just don’t have anything finished to show you so…

Fine confections, not fine art–that’s what I completed this week–two batches of cupcakes to be precise. The first was chocolate with coconut frosting. The second was vanilla almond with coconut frosting. Have I mentioned that I tend to be a fly by the seat of your pants sort in the kitchen? Well yeah, I like to improvise rather than adhere to a strict recipe. So for both batches, I sorta wung it. I looked at alotta recipes from various sources, made some notes and then got to baking. It worked out A-OK. Everyone who came by to stuff their cute little faces with sugary treats reacted with nothing but smiles and yums and thank yous. I was surprised and delighted to find that the vanilla almond cupcakes came out on top in a purely non-scientific taste test. Delighted because I reallyreally wung it with these. Know what else I did? I actually wrote down what I did! Exclamation point because I rarely do that. I think this is only the second time I’ve bothered to record a recipe I came up with. For all you bakers and cupcake junkies I’ll include the winning recipe after the jump.

Saturday Morning Cartoons: The Melvins Visit Pancake Mountain

Posted in Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos, video with tags , , , on February 13, 2010 by ssstephg

Alright, it’s not a cartoon and the sound quality sucks harder than Punxatawny Phil, but it’s got a puppet, The Melvins (doing karaoke!) and a buncha little kids thrashing to The Melvins.  See now, I was right–even tots love these guys.

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles: Noodlerina

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on February 7, 2010 by ssstephg

Friday was nice. I hauled the buckets of chalk out to the walk and pretty soon, a small crowd had gathered. I executed this drawing with some much appreciated guidance from my pal Mr. Brown. He suggested “noodle hair” and the ballerina body. The armpit hair, which I thought was brilliant idea, I happily added at 11 year old Jordan’s suggestion. Kids are pretty awesome.

Not the best pic, I know, but the sidewalk was still pink from the last drawing and there were patches of snow here and there. Whatever. I’m defying nature here. I think it’s easier to see if you click it for a larger view.

Super Scientific Online Art Quiz Reveals The Mind’s Inner Workings!

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , on January 17, 2010 by ssstephg

Because everybody loves an online quiz!

We’re in transition here at d’Arte Board.  We’ve brought in professional marketing  jackholes to assess our audience’s desires.  After careful study and consideration we’ve decided to shift our focus to better accomodate what you all want.  Instead of continuing as a mere art related blog, the Board will soon expand to include an art related print tabloid.  In the meantime, I’ll work on developing MAd hEadLiNE sKilZ HerE.

Watch for us at your local supermarket checkout line!  And now, on to the quiz.  Below is my own masterful drawing along with the startling scientific test results.  Click the picture to take the test and gain amazing insight into your own warped psyche.

Happy Cuddly Bean Day Y’all!

Posted in Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , on January 5, 2010 by ssstephg

Today, January 6th, is Cuddle Up Day, a day to cuddle up to who(or what)ever you have handy I s’pose. Isn’t that sweet? It is until you discover it’s also Bean Day.  What an odd coincidence.  It hardly seems appropriate.

well so, hesitant hugs, depending on which holiday you choose to celebrate.

Sunday Sidewalk Doodle: Happy Snorkeler

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , on January 3, 2010 by ssstephg

I spent a while outside drawing this on the sidewalk the day before New Years Eve when the ground was dry and the temperatures not too terribly low. It’s been snowed on and shoveled off a couple of times since then so it’s gotten a little blurry but it’s still visible!

Every year it’s a battle between me and New England winter. And every year I get my ass kicked hard. Usually by this time, I’m just about down for the count. So far, this year is different. Each time I manage to squeeze in another sidewalk drawing, it feels like a tiny victory.

Ah Hell, I got nothin: Nonsense Post Number 13,001

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on December 26, 2009 by ssstephg

How bout this sketch from an old journal?  Chronic insomnia self portrait.

Yeah sorry I didn’t post at a reasonable hour today but you know, it’s the holidays and I’ve been busy hanging out with people I rarely see and eating like a pig and stuff.  I’m sitting in my living room right now while three friends are playing “Take On Me” on guitar, bass and accordian.   Good times.  Let’s see, what else?  Um…  Here’s a slightly blurry photo of Dermott,  my pet turtle from a few years ago.  He’s nine now so he’s about six or seven in the pic.  Handsome devil, isn’t he?

Ever wonder what the ratio of fur to body is on your cat?    It’s about eight parts fur to two parts body on my pal Buster.  I found that out when he had to have his foot shaved one time.

Coincidentally, eight to two is the ratio of beeswax to damar resin I use when mixing encaustic medium and here’s a detail from another encaustic icon work in progress.

Alrighty, I’ll stop now. Sorry bout that. I promise this sort of nonsense post won’t become a habit. Hope you all are having a great holiday season.

Big Hearts,
-Steph

Christmas Angels

After reading Jason’s post I was inspired to look back through some photos of Christmas trees I’ve had over the years.  The closeup on the left here is from one of my favorites. It had a sort of Vegas meets Dr. Seuss vibe. I’ll be sure to include a full body shot after the jump.  I think this was from two years ago.    If I remember rightly, we sawed down the tree ourselves at a local “kill your own” tree farm.  They supplied us with a saw, a length of rope and a red plastic sled for the chore.  Then we headed off wandering through the fields of trees to pick our victim all special-like. There was alot of snow that year which made the deed that much more of a challenge. After the kill, cold, wet and victorious, we dragged the slaughtered evergreen back to the parking lot, crammed it into the back of the stationwagon and headed home for some well-deserved hot chocolate. So fun!

Last year, I took a slightly more humane although still very DIY approach to the Seasonal centerpiece. Read more »

What I’m looking At…

Posted in Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , on December 5, 2009 by ssstephg

The recent issue of National Geographic has an article about pollen which is accompanied by lots of fabulous color-enhanced microscopic images. I can’t stop looking at them! Here, I scanned some for your viewing pleasure.
I made a compilation of a bunch of separate pics.

Now I know what the water from a productive netti session looks like up close. What amazingly gorgeous forms! And kudos to whoever did the coloring. That must have been a fun job.netti pot StephG
Nasal irrigation is good.

In the same NG issue, there’s a fascinating article on the Hadza–a hunter-gatherer society of Tanzania that has changed little in the last 10,00 years or so! The series of really intense, close up portraits of members from the camp visited by the author is especially striking.
Here are three examples cut and pasted into one pic. Read more »

Nail art, it’s big in Japan. No, not this kind of nail art:

This kind:
