In the Auerbach of my Mind

Another reworked monotype. I was thinking about Frank Auerbach, the great british figurative expressionist. He’s one of the painters floating in the back of my head; his aggressive paint-slathering is of such a unique character it has hammered itself there into my sub-brain. My application isn’t mimicking his nor is it close, it’s the attitude he has with working and reworking this viscous medium until it practically destroys the surface and has to be scrapped down and rebuilt all over again. I’m having a great deal of fun exploring and tripping along with these old prints I made back at Robert Blackburn’s Printmaking workshop in Manhattan.

Dark Trade: New Coat of Paint for Old Print

I’m continuing to take old and not particularly successful monotypes and reworking them with oil paint. It’s not quite working here perhaps because I haven’t resolved the relationship of the figure and its treatment with the breaking up of the picture plane. The shapes are not jiving, but I do like the figure.

Sexual Assault Can Lead to Liver Damage

Posted in Art, homage, male nude, nude, oil painting, Painting, Tom Bennett with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 5, 2011 by Tom Bennett

Tityus was the Greek mythological character who was put to death for assaulting a daughter of Zeus and sentenced to be eternally chained in the great pit of Tartarus, a greek version of hell, while his liver (thought to hold passionate emotion, ie, anger) was gnawed at by vultures and snakes. This story of eternal struggle and retribution is similar to the Prometheus myth and in ways to the narrative of Sisyphus. Titian apparently loved this line of metaphor; he made paintings of all of these subjects. Last year I made a monotype based on his Sisyphus.

I see existential analogies between ancient myth and the contemporary human condition and have always been intrigued by the dark gothic drama of baroque allegorical art. Here I’ve taken multiple images from allegorical paintings and overlapped them, searching for some kind of combination of grace, jaggedness and abstracted puzzlement.

As with any just completed piece I post, I’m still pondering adjustments.

Considering the connection to sclerosis and retribution, I’ve invented a new drink,  The Bin Laden:  2 shots and a splash of water.               (apologies to the ultra sensitive)

Thanks, I’ll be here all week. Enjoy the veal.

Stage 2 of a Figurative to Abstract Painting

Posted in abstract, Art, figurative, homage, male nude, oil painting, Painting, technique, Tom Bennett, Work in Progress with tags , , , , , , , , on February 24, 2011 by Tom Bennett

This week I’m posting a current stage in an ongoing metamorphosis of a painting influenced by Caravaggio’s Crucifixion of St Peter. I’m trying to find the place where the abstract marks camoflage any overt figurative narrative. I’ve been working here with oil, oil stick; a 3 part medium made of damar, turps and stand oil; and black oil medium, made with litharge. The black oil creates a really beautiful, deep and strong paint film and glaze.

I’ll be the first to admit this is a mediocre photo.

I have here 3 monotypes intended as semi-abstracted versions of a mensa candidate from the Jersey Shore, as dreamt by Toni Tiller via her blog.

Monotype: House Boys Don’t Do Windows

I think a true nightmare might just be being a page for a congressman. This is a first attempt at an interpretation of a Toni Tiller dream.
From Tiller’s FB page:
“Last nights dream – tom bennett was the nude valet for newt gingrich, performing the basic everyday head houseman skills; announcing guests, co-ordinating staff, and managing his employers social schedule. the nudity wasn’t a purient thing, newt just liked to explore the power of his reach, too bad that it all came out and cost him the 2012 nomination.”
Her blog, Last Night’s Dream
The drawing is a bit weird: it becomes a woman below the waist. And the ass has a stain. None of that was not a consciously intentional thing. I’m going to be sick now.

Virility, Sterility, Puerility. Andro Pause is Coming to Town.

I’m continuing this series of the male figure. Here’s a new word I came across: Andropause. I find this an amusing attempt by some to excoriate the more complex feminine process of midlife aging. As a member of the male gender class, I admit we are the weaker sex emotionally, psychologically and, considering our place in the biosphere, physically. Lets face it, men are deep down scared shitless. That’s why we bluster and play the the macho door-busting hero. The Male mid-life crisis might as well be call boyopause.

Gratuitous Laziness

Posted in Art, art on paper, figurative, gesture, male nude, monotype, nude, printmaking, Tom Bennett, work on paper with tags , , , , , , , on May 5, 2010 by Tom Bennett

I’m a contradiction. I work very hard and I am lazy. I have a deep desire for luxury and comfort: whether its an old drafty shack on Cape Cod or a Parisian 5 star Hotel, as long as I can sleep and play the lay-about. Until, of course, my buried catholic-induced guilt and Swedish-bred work ethic kick me in the ass.
Here is a monotype in a series of self-portraits as a beached ne’er-do whale.

far away from stuffed animals

Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital, male nude, nude with tags , , , , on July 6, 2009 by Daniel Allyn Lee

I wanted to work on something that was not stuffed animals and cute, twee monsters. I’ve been futzing with this digital collage for a while. I’m not convinced its absolutely finished but I think its very close.

Monotype: Sex, Death and the Nude

I was thinking about the drawings of Annibale Carracci, which I was fortunate enough to actually handle in the Uffizzi Gallery in Florence once years ago. That, and the atmosphere of Turner as this image – generated from a photographic collaboration of sorts with Toni Tiller – was developing.

I don’t have any work ready to post this week for a thousand reasons and excuses, so here is a study I made today connected to the current nude male series.

I’ve had a seven day flu which has wiped me out. I’m still reeling , but I dragged my self down into the dungeon where I keep my press and pulled this. There’s a set up for you. The turps really help me breathe, its better than nasal spray. Another in a series of male nudes.

Ghost Image Redux

Posted in Art, art on paper, figurative, male nude, monotype, printmaking, Tom Bennett, work on paper with tags , , , , , , on March 11, 2009 by Tom Bennett

Here are 2 more pieces in the series of unique prints I’m making using the “ghost” image of previous monotype left on the plexi glass plate. I’ve included last week’s image to put the current two in context. My main medium here is, again, oil based etching inks, with oil paint brought in as more viscous and opaque passages are handled. In the case of “King of the Unnamed Wand 3″, I purposely applied paint and ink in heavier quantities in areas of the plate so that the pressure of the press- about 6000 lbs psi-pushed the medium into splayed “waves” across the image. This can be a wild, hit or miss proposition. Here, I initially was ambivalent about the results, but on further reflection I decided I liked the graphicly strange marks.

First in a series of male nudes using the ghost image of a previous monotype. The ghost is the ink or paint residue from a heretofore printed plate. I hope to continue with a short, evolving narrative.
