Like David Hockney’s layered Polaroids? Want one of your own? Well, you’re in luck because you can get your own photos Hockneyized here.

I’d also like to thank Bryan Linden for puking in my bathtub 13 years ago so I could have this artistic opportunity now. Thanks Bry, for your unflagging dedication to the arts!

Digi Wooly Willy

Posted in Art, Links, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 24, 2009 by ssstephg

Remember Wooly Willy, the magnetic toy where you picked up the metal shavings and used them to draw hair all over Willy’s face? Man, I loved that game! I actually found one a few years ago and still play with it sometimes. Well today I got wondering if there were a digital version of Wooly Willy, and lo and behold, of course there is!  FreeLancerFox has a version in his Deviant Art gallery.  I also found a Wooly Willy application at Paze Interactive that’s available for your iPhone or iPod Touch.  This second one looks more like the original game.

Have fun!

Introducing “Here In The Land Of Slack”

Posted in Art, Links, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , on June 16, 2009 by ssstephg

You may have noticed a recent addition to the links we like section here on d’Arte Board–“Here In The Land Of Slack” is a wonderful art and poetry blog written by poet, friend and fellow Western Mass dweller Jim DuBois. I was recently very flattered when Jim asked if I’d like to be featured on the blog. Of course I would! Who wouldn’t want to be included in a blog full of interesting, provocative writing and art? See the posts here and here, and make sure to check out the rest of Jim’s blog while you’re there.

Following is Jim’s description of “Here In The Land Of Slack”:

“I wanted to have a place to promote the creativity of people close to me and in my local community. because I think there are not enough places to see the creative works of human beings. Lots of people do creative things and they just end up in a pile in their closet or something. Which is too bad. The world is more interesting to me when those things are shown.

Even people who make art for a living don’t have enough places to have their work shown, and can always use some more exposure, so I started adding some artists that I like to the blog. But I always try to make and have at least some personal connection with them when I do.

So, I started a blog to have a place to show creativity that I find interesting. Hopefully it brings a little more connection among creative people in the world, because that is also important to me.”

Yeah so, go take a look!

Are you stuck on a project and you just can’t figure it out? Take a nap. I don’t have anything I am stuck on, but I might take a nap anyway, you know, just in case.

Last week I was playing on a Wii but now I am back at home and I don’t have one so I’m playing this instead. Not really the same thing, but it’s frustrating enough that it will do for now. Enjoy.

Wonderful little flash game, short and sweet but a bit tricky to figure out at first. I’ll give you a hint, keep the jellyfish away from the sharks, then start swapping words, oh and there are multiple endings too. It’s called Today I Die.

Bargain Shopping In NY Art Auctions!

Posted in Art, Links on May 4, 2009 by jdhastings

Recessions are great for finding bargains. I’m thinking of not spending any money after this trouble is over and just saving it so I can go crazy during the next global meltdown!

The Financial Times is reporting that (duh) art auction prices are goign down with everything else in the world. Of course that just means more deals for collectors like us!

That means you could buy the Chagall pictured above (“Le Jongleur de Paris”) for under TWO MILLION DOLLARS!! How can you pass up a deal like that? It might as well be in the Goodwill Bargain Bin!

Nobody doesn’t like naked people. This site is like having X-ray glasses. Something very interesting happens as the models “transform”. its definitely an fascinating little social experiment and it will also make you a better public speaker.

I was supposed to be working all day today but I couldn’t help but play a few sneaky rounds of Me and the Key. The premise is simple, find the key and click it. I can’t seem to get past the second Pong round, because I kind of suck at this stuff, see if you can do better.

Bespoke Face Corset and Neck Brace by London artist Paddy

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=19170589

not only because maybe I’m feeling a little droopy, but because it’s a gorgeous, thought provoking hand-crafted work of art. From the artist’s etsy shop, madybypaddy:

“Due to popular demand, Paddy is making available for the first time his unique Silk Face Corset and Neck Brace garments. Paddy was originally commissioned by London’s Victoria & Albert Museum to produce a series of facial garments in response to themes and issues relating to cosmetic surgery raised at the Museum’s event ‘Short Cuts to Beauty’. Each Face Corset is made specifically to fit the commissioners face and combines ‘facial body play’ with beautifully crafted workmanship. Each commission will be produced over a number of weeks via a postal fitting correspondence.”

Happy Friday!

Good News!  d’Arte Board friend Terry Border of Bent Objects fame has finally announced the  purchase date of his much anticipated book.  The book will be available October 6, 2009.  It’s now available for pre-order on Amazon and Border’s Books.  As per Terry’s suggestion, I’m thinking I’ll head over to my local bookshop and see if they’ll order a copy.

I have no idea what Easter is for but one of my favorite things in the world is playing with eggs. I used to do pysanky which is Ukranian egg dying with wax, but I never did the kinds of traditional designs, I liked stuff more like this, but right now I am intrigued by this method and I thought I would give it a try and let you know how it turned out. Here are two other cool things you can do with eggs, dye them with onion skins, or go to the toolbox and grab your Dremmel and see how steady your hand is.

    Yet More Contemporary Chinese Art

Local Public Broadcasting Station KQED does a monthly tour of art galleries in the SF/Bay Area. This month they focused on a few galleries featuring Contemporary Chinese and Chinese American Artists. You can view the video by visiting that link, and you can even subscribe to their podcast.

Of particular interest here, the second gallery they visit is the Mark Wolfe gallery, which is one of the places I’ve visited the last two months during my own monthly Twitter Art Crawl. I highly recommend this as the artists give some great explanations for their exquisite work.

It’s spring (finally!) and much in the vein of our Christmas snowflake maker Steph steered me in the direction of this flower maker. Add petals, choose colors, shapes, and opacity and then add it to the community garden here.

They can be as simple or as complicated as you like.

    Lazy Morning Art Blog Surfing

Posted in Art, Links, Miscellaneous, news with tags , , , on April 6, 2009 by jdhastings

On this groggy morning, prior to kickstarting myself with the necessary dose of caffeine, I have been passively surfing other art blogs for stuff to excite the tiny part of my brain that is fully awake. I thought I’d share some of the results.

Robert Goff ponders the relationship between an artist’s age and whether they are “emerging” (via Amy Stein). The question came up in response to a young investor/collector who was, “like so many fairgoers today, acquiring art for reasons other than what it depicts, what it represents, how it affects him.” If this recession does nothing but burn out every smarmy interloper who decided that art was a hip avenue of speculation, it will have been worth it.

Something tells me I’m being an optimist on that point, though here is a lovely blog devoted to the idea of collecting art on a budget as a labor of love.

Again with the economy on our minds, we have another story of an artist selling their personal wares for spare cash. In this case Modern Art Obsession notes that Nan Goldin is selling some very personal wares. If you ever wanted to share an intimate moment with Nan, here’s your chance.

Paging Tom Brown- Destiny Calling on Line 1…

Posted in Art, Links, Miscellaneous, MOMA, news with tags , , , , , , on April 3, 2009 by jdhastings

Close friend of d’Arte Board, Tom Brown, who could be said to be stepfather to the site due to his pioneering work in the field of Myspace Group Moderation, has long been a fan of two things: Photoshop Trickeration and Chess.

Well now the two have been somewhat combined into Competetive Photoshopping.

(Yeah they call it tennis, but it could just as well be chess, unless you choose to wear a headband. Which you should probably wear at all times anyways, whether playing chess, jazzercizing or taking a nap after eating a bunch of pork ribs.)

I just learned of this thanks to the Museum of Modern Art’s Twitter Feed.

You can view today’s match LIVE at this website or via their own twitter feed.

This still doesn’t replace my idea of a Competitive Painting League where artists have to contend with their opponents playing active defense, trying to disrupt their attempts to accomplish their goals, but it’s a step in the right direction. I’m all for it.
