W.I.P. #2 And White Square Project

Posted in Art, digital, Links, monotype, printmaking, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , , on February 9, 2011 by Toni Tiller

I am working the same source image as last week and am about half way through this one, two runs through the press so far, and at least one more to go. I have realized recently that one of the real benefits in using fabric is that it can be soaked and re-soaked as many times needed without breaking down, an option paper doesn’t offer. What I am learning is that because fabric is more selective about what ink it wants to grab multiple printings gives me an opportunity to build values slowly and gives me more decision making options. So far I like where this one is going, hopefully I won’t fuck it up.

In other news I was contacted the other day by the friendly people over at The White Square Project, a fun participatory Tumblr blog. Every two weeks they give people a new theme and a 250 x 250 pixel square to fill. The current theme is color, and this was my contribution*:

I chose a digital piece, but they accept all mediums, so come on over and play!

*confession – I wish i knew how to quilt like JD because I would totally quilt the hell out of this pattern.

I’m A Little Stuck

Posted in Art, Links, Toni Tiller with tags , , on January 26, 2011 by Toni Tiller

And I mean that literally, stuck between here and there thanks to some weather issues, so until I can get there I am going to post this link that I posted around a few places last night. Described as, “A list of the Best Painters of all-time in Western Painting, the 101 most important painters of the history of western painting, from 13th century to 21st century”, let’s just say it generated a lot of conversation. We all had a lot of opinions about who was on there that shouldn’t be, who was left off, and if these lists are just a complete bunch of horseshit. Feel free to weigh in.

I haven’t done one of these in forever, but it’s Sunday, and raining, and I’m kind of thinking about writing but am actually just goofing on on the internet playing with THIS.

Try Walking A Mile In These

Posted in Art, Links, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , , on March 10, 2010 by Toni Tiller

I’d be lucky if I made it 10 feet. And how do you resist the urge to scrape the bottom of your shoe off? These are designed by the artist INSA and are an homage to both Chris Ofili and Alexander McQueen. They can be seen in the upcoming exhibit at Tate Britain.

While I was looking into those I found these too. Is our friend Terry Border branching out into footwear?

It would seem so at first glance but it is really the work of artist Polly Verity. She uses paper and wire to creat art and wearable garments, check her out.

John Currin

Posted in Art, Links, Toni Tiller with tags , , , on March 1, 2010 by Toni Tiller

No, not that one, but OK I’ll admit that was who I was originally looking for, but then I found another John Currin completely on the other side of the world. Just so happens he is an artist too, and much like our own Tom Bennett is also the son of a painter, Garry Currin. John creates dark, taut, richly textured narratives with his work, I’m not sure what medium he is using to create them and I am enjoying them so much I am also not sure I care. Have a look at more over on his website Obscure Gallery, or find him on twitter here.

We all “met” Lisa in a particularly pedantic art group on Myspace that shall remain unnamed when she was creating lush and visceral paintings of herself and her friends. She has since moved on to pursue her MFA at Goldsmiths and is re-contextualizing  charity shop figurines, giving them the opportunity to become social commentators. I like them, and I think you should go to her website and have a look around.

Nail Art… but IS it art?

Nail art, it’s big in Japan. No, not this kind of nail art:

Holiday Art Sale!

Hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving weekend! Overall, mine was good, but a bit of a mixed bag. I didn’t give details over the weekend when I mentioned I was laid up with a fabulous new injury because, quite honestly, tripping over the ottoman is not a cool way to earn yourself a bad ankle sprain. So instead let’s pretend it was a missed triple Salchow landing. Or if your not of the mind that figure skating is cool (and I’m not unless it involves some crazy thug knee-bashing a la Tonya Harding vs Nancy Kerrigan), let’s say I twisted my ankle jumping off the shed roof into an enormous pile of leaves (although for the record, my launch off the shed went down without a hitch.)  So now my ambulatory abilities are severely restricted.  I can’t put any weight on my right foot.  I’m forced to sit around on my fat ass as much as possible or hobble around on crutches when neccessary and I don’t even have an impressive anecdote to go along with it.  I cringe every time I’m asked the dreaded question, “What happened?!”  I’ve told a bunch of people that my pal Mark pushed me down the stairs.

shop#2 lotsa stuff at $25!

Do you feel bad for me? How bad? So bad you’d be willing to put your money where your mouth is and toss some of your hard earned green my way? If so, you’ll be thrilled to hear I just spent the last several hours (sitting on my fat bored ass) updating both of my Etsy shops.  Any art lovers on your Christmas list?  Maybe you wanna treat yourself to something this holiday season.  The miniature encaustics that I typically sell for $125 through galleries are now priced at a mere 75 bucks!  My second shop where I sell less involved paintings is loaded with a bunch of stuff priced super low–mostly $25 and under!

Whelp, that’s it for now. I’m gonna grab ye old crutches and hobble off to the water closet. Fingers crossed I don’t trip. Wish me luck. It would suck to have my obit read: busted her skull on the toilet bowl.

Unsteadily,
-Steph

Potassium, Balance & Things That Don’t Suck

Posted in Links, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on November 28, 2009 by ssstephg

Like most normal people*, I LOVE bananas.  As part of a balanced diet I eat upwards of four a day.  They’re a good source of potassium in a neat, tidy package.  They come with their own durable, biodegradable wrapping in a lovely cheery yellow and are the perfect snack matrix for peanut butter–the greatest food invention ever.  And bonus of bonuses, they come with stickers!  Stylish stickers that will stay in place on your sleeve for days and days.  If you’re a banana fan, you’re no doubt as excited as I am about Chiquita’s recent sticker line expansion–so many delightful new designs!  But have you visited their website yet? It’s a fun waste of time where you can design banana stickers, alter photos and waste loads of time doing other time-wasting nonsense! I’m really diggin it since (due to my lack of balance) I’m all laid up with a fun new injury.

*I realize not everyone loves bananas. I once had a startling conversation about fruit with my pal Karen who I’d always considered normal (ok that last italicized bit is a lie which just proves my point). She explained that her favorite fruit was the orange and that her least favorite was the banana because it’s so inconvenient. She complained about the messiness of peeling them, having to remove the damn stringy bits and pull out the “little black buttplug” at the bottom. Funny thing is, I have all those complaints about oranges… except for the buttplug, with oranges it’s the white bellybutton thing where the segments meet at their ends. And then there’s this nutjob I know from the hardware store around the corner who actually hates bananas. Just goes to show, people are freaks.

Quite normally yours,
-Steph

Consumer Detritus: Regretsy

Posted in "But Is It Art?", Links, Miscellaneous, Tom Bennett with tags , , , , on October 7, 2009 by Tom Bennett

A huge number of artists and craftspeople worldwide market their handmade creations on the online site Etsy. A lot of it, most of it, like most man-made stuff in general, is crap. Regretsy is my new favorite blog. Some of this is art. Well maybe very little of it is. The rat is kinda tasty.

So I went to see the new Harry Potter movie last night because I’m one of those dorks who read all the books and totally got sucked into the story (shut up, it’s really good), and was delighted to discover there’s a new Hayao Miyazaki flick COMING SOON!!!  Watch the trailer for Ponyo here… due out in theaters August 14.

Here’s a clip from one of my favorite films ever, Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.

Here’s a new game to play while we all have hours to kill over the long weekend, it should suck up at least 15 minutes. You have to slice shapes and avoid balls and maybe some other stuff. As expected I’m not very good at it, the little balls keep smashing me, so I’m going to watch this video from the 1930′s to cheer myself up.

Wanna Participate In An Internet Meme?

Of course you do. So, draw a giraffe and send it here because this gentleman is trying to get a million giraffes and so far he has only 5500. The only catch is it cannot be digital, which is a prejudice that I know will break some of your hearts, but he says he has a good reason. Worth a look even if you aren’t going to send a drawing because some of them are surprisingly lovely.
