Frank Stella

Yesterday was great. I spent the day building my own indoor studio in the room that was up until recently occupied by a giant breathing bottle of tequila, which sounds preposterous but I swear it is true. It took all day, and in the process I had to make a much bigger mess, but at the end of the day there was a huge, completely functional space. Initially the intention was to make the space and then make some art to post for today, but at 10:30 pm I realized it wasn’t going to happen, so I’m going to post this cool interview from Frank Stella instead.

“I Will” by Ellsworth Kelly

0“I Will” by Ellsworth Kelly, Stainless Steel, 1981.

I created no new art this week, so I decided to contribute an essay that I wrote a couple of years ago about a work of art that was in my old neighborhood in Chicago.  Ellsworth Kelly had long been one of my favorite artists before I realized that this sculpture, one of my favorite public artworks in the city, was his creation.  I know that my D’ArteBoard co-writers remember the long-winded, boring essays that I used to write for fun, so it should come as no surprise to them that I wrote an essay on this piece.  It’s a short one though; read it after the jump, and then watch the interview with Ellsworth Kelly celebrating his 75th year on the third rock from the sun.   Read more »

Some Attention

I recently had a photograph featured in print for Shore Bride Magazine. The article features information on a client of mine who selected the image. I generally make it a practice to sneak some 35mm shots in on all of my digital shoots, and it turns out that this happened to be one of those! Who says film is dead? You can find out more information on Cynthia here, and read more from the writer here.

Gustav Klimt: 2008 Dancehall Remix

Klimt used a lot of abstract patterns to assist in his representational paintngs. I decided to use Klimt’s representational paintings to make some abstract patterns. Thus the cosmic balance has been restored.

Click on them for a bigger view. Each of these is about 14″ inches wide, I think. They are physical collages of posters.

Recently, I was hired to cover the 3rd Annual Ducati Fashion Show, an event that puts on display the latest motorcycle-related clothing available from the Italian, speed bike manufacturer.  After the shoot, in contacting each of the models regarding their photos, I found out a bit more about one of them, Michelle Niemiec, through her Myspace profile (myspace.com/Mniemiec22 ).  As it turned out, she is much more than a pretty face.  Michelle is the author of Industry Exposed, a book that provides guidance to neophyte models through frank discussing of her own experiences.  In addition, Ms. Niemiec is also the founder of NationalTalentAssociation.org, an editor at Model Scene Magazine, and the Vice President of Women Against Sexual Predators (W.A.S.P.) Chicago.  Upon learning all of this, I was naturally intrigued, and also very impressed (that’s a lot of achievement and involvement for a 26 year old).  So, in the spirit of good blog journalism, I approached Michelle to see if she would be interested in answering some questions on behalf of D’ArteBoard; she politely obliged.  Here is what followed: Read more »

Links Du Lapin #3

Back when I was trying to learn to paint, a failed venture by the way, I used to love to look at the deceptively simple paintings of Wayne Thiebauld. The SFGate recently published an interview with him, where he talks about his time in New York City hanging out with the big boys of Abstract Expressionism and the influence it had on him as an artist, a teacher, and who in the process unconsciously reveals himself to be a generally lovely human being. Go check it out here.
