Miles Mausoleum

Posted in Art, film, Jason Gray, landscape with tags on December 24, 2011 by Jason Gray

As promised several weeks ago, here are some of the shots that I took on a visit to a nearby abandoned mausoleum. All photos were shot with a Bronica ETRSi and 75mm f/2.8 lens on Kodak T-Max 100 film. Images were scanned, which contributed to the funky color-cast, and appear completely unedited (save the watermark). I’ll include some scans from the final prints at a later time.

From Wikipedia:

Stephen Miles, a veteran of the War of 1812, was buried here by his son Stephen W. Miles. The mausoleum is located atop Eagle Cliff midway between Columbia and Valmeyer in what is known variously as Eagle Cliff Cemetery or Miles Cemetery. Due to its size and position on the bluff, the mausoleum is visible from several miles away, and has thus gained a prominent position in local legend. It has been a frequent target for vandals, and as a result all bodies were removed and reburied elsewhere; the fifty-six crypts are now empty and open, and the door to the mausoleum is gone.

I Just Feel Like Sharing This

When I was out in California I saw William Kentridge’s Magic Flute video installation. I usually don’t have the patience for video work but it was mesmerizing, and soothing to my Stendhal Syndrome tummy. I thought about posting it here but since an integral part of the piece is the 3D structure it’s housed in it doesn’t seem to translate effectively for the internet. I found this piece instead, Wanting…And Weighing (1997), I hope you like it.

Saturday Night Hallucinogenic Cartoon Fest

I only realize now that the Betty Boop character was based on a D’arteboard author. Listen carefully to her giggling and exotic New Jersey accent. Catch Cab Calloway singing a brilliant cameo.

Winsor Mccay was an early animation pioneer and he was apparently experimenting with horse tranquilizers here.

Arthur Lipsett

I sheepishly admit I had vague awareness of this avant-garde filmmaker, who was a huge influence on people like Stanley Kubrick and George Lucas. He sadly committed suicide just before his fiftieth birthday.

Art World Mascots

This film just came out: Herb and Dorothy Its playing in New York.

Herb and Dorothy Vogel were a working class couple living in a rent controlled one bedroom apartment and they spent all their money on contemporary art. The stipulation was it had to be under $100 and it had to fit in the car. Over the past 45 years they amassed a huge half-billion dollar collection they stuffed in their apartment. They eventually donated -not sold- the entire collection to the Smithsonian.

I’m Going To Make Some Popcorn And Watch A Movie

I’ve liked the artwork of Jamie Hewlett since his days drawing Tank Girl for Deadline magazine, and I’ve liked Blur since, well, Blur and so I was delighted when Damon and Jamie got together to create Gorillaz. Someone else liked the idea enough to film the project from early days and put together this fun documentary and now you can watch it for free on the internet, I’ll give you a teaser below and if you like what you see you can watch the whole thing here. Enjoy!

Funny, sad “Guest of Cindy Sherman”

We went to see the documentary,“Guest of Cindy Sherman” , last night in Greenwich Village and it left me with mixed feelings. Very entertaining and maybe a little too long, it paints a great, bitter picture of the overblown downtown art scene, the biggest joke being the bloated Julian Schnabel’s performance. I’d recommend seeing it if and when it comes to your neck of the hemisphere.

Let’s Go To The Movies

Back when I was doing self portraits I got compared to Cindy Sherman about 8 million times, which was initially frustrating because I had no idea who she was, but I suppose later flattering because when I saw her work I really liked it. Anyway, there is a movie about her playing at Cinema Village in NYC opening today and I want to go see it, so if any New York d’Arte Board readers wanna go with me then hit me up.

Some Attention

I recently had a photograph featured in print for Shore Bride Magazine. The article features information on a client of mine who selected the image. I generally make it a practice to sneak some 35mm shots in on all of my digital shoots, and it turns out that this happened to be one of those! Who says film is dead? You can find out more information on Cynthia here, and read more from the writer here.

Recently, I was hired to cover the 3rd Annual Ducati Fashion Show, an event that puts on display the latest motorcycle-related clothing available from the Italian, speed bike manufacturer.  After the shoot, in contacting each of the models regarding their photos, I found out a bit more about one of them, Michelle Niemiec, through her Myspace profile (myspace.com/Mniemiec22 ).  As it turned out, she is much more than a pretty face.  Michelle is the author of Industry Exposed, a book that provides guidance to neophyte models through frank discussing of her own experiences.  In addition, Ms. Niemiec is also the founder of NationalTalentAssociation.org, an editor at Model Scene Magazine, and the Vice President of Women Against Sexual Predators (W.A.S.P.) Chicago.  Upon learning all of this, I was naturally intrigued, and also very impressed (that’s a lot of achievement and involvement for a 26 year old).  So, in the spirit of good blog journalism, I approached Michelle to see if she would be interested in answering some questions on behalf of D’ArteBoard; she politely obliged.  Here is what followed: Read more »

The animated life

I rediscovered Jeff Scher again recently. His animated drawings and paintings choreographed to music are mesmerizing.
From the NY Times:
Jeff Scher is a painter who makes experimental films and an experimental filmmaker who paints. His work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art and the Hirshhorn Museum, and has been screened at the Guggenheim Museum, the Pompidou Center in Paris, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and at many film festivals around the world, including opening night at the New York Film Festival. Mr. Scher has also had two solo shows of his paintings, which have also been included in many group shows in New York galleries. Additionally, he has created commissioned work for HBO, HBO Family, PBS, the Sundance Channel and more. Mr. Scher teaches graduate courses at the School of Visual Arts and will be joining the faculty at NYU Tisch School of the Arts Kanbar Institute of Film & Television’s Animation program in the fall. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two sons.
