Hipster Monster
, 8″x10″, digitally colored pen and ink

I’m still working hard on stuff for the upcoming craft show, I’ll have a booth at. This is just a fun lil sketch I decided to play around with in the computer. I’m hoping to concentrate a bit more on drawing and writing after this show next month.

This sketch reminded me of something so, I decided to add the star and red background on the compooter to kind of play it up just for fun.

monster card
I just ordered some post cards of this and another design. This one is three different sketches mashed together and colored on the computer.
I’m doing a craft show in the beginning of June. Its my first one; I figured I’d try one out and,  see how I do and if I like it. Anyway, I’ll pry sell little sets of postcards plus, I plan to stick them in the bags instead of a business cards.
I’m already freaking out about not having enough time to get everything I want to do done. I plan to make a few collage/paintings between now and then, but mostly I will be sewing my face off.

another cartooney drawing

monsters
Here’s a fun little drawing of a group of monsters, drawn in ink pen and colored on the computer. I’ll probably paint in the original with acrylic washes. Its kind of nice to be able to play around with the color first on the computer screen first. For some reason I love using the halftone filter on the color.

end of times

Here’s something I was messing with this week. I think it turned out alright. Of course, what does it matter, the world will be gone in a couple years anyway.

unhappy home

I wanted to use pictures that I took for this is a digital collage.  Most of them are nature shots from around my home.  I tinted(tainted) all the pics with clippings of internet porn.  I like playing around with source material especially with digital stuff.

Electronic Collage

Posted in Art, Collage, digital with tags , , , , , , on October 27, 2009 by jdhastings

That title should be pronounced in your best approximation of the vocoder voice, such as was used by 80s greats Zapp on such hits as Computer Love. Why doesn’t anybody make music like that anymore?

Anyways, here is my electronic art, baby:

Meta-scrap Small

Just like the Zapp song was being played on Vinyl, this is not entirely digital. In fact, it is built from 4 different sheets of scanned scraps of paintings.

I explain more and embed Computer Love after the jump. You know you want to embed computer love.

digital cat today

Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital on October 19, 2009 by Daniel Allyn Lee

This piece is a few weeks old. I didn’t make any new collages this week. I think, it is a self portrait; I mean, it started of as one. I’m not sure what that means about me, but I do like cats.

Here’s another experiment in illustration. I’m thinking about moving into paper collage and paint soon. Although I still <3 digital.

Still, experimenting with ways of mixing illustration with collage.  Nothing too serious; just working through some ideas.

The art dolls I had planned on posting today still aren’t finished, next week for sure. Instead here is a little experiment combining digital collage and a monster drawing.

gree

I’m not sure if this works that well; it kind of feels like the illustration is just slapped on top off the collage. I need to work on integrating the two more. It is still fun and i really do like the background though.

patterns

I opened a new etsy shop. I have so much older art just taking up storage space, I figured I might as well see if anyone wants it. Its nice that etsy lets you run two different shops and it doesn’t cost that much to list. I was going to try ebay, but I wasn’t very impressed with the art I saw there and I already have experience with etsy.
This shop will be filled with mostly art, but I was also considering making some decorative pillows. I made a few quilted pillows for gifts and I really like the way they turned out.  I also plan to get some custom printed fabric from spoonflower.com to make some pillow from.  Here are a few patterns I was considering.  I’m not sure which to try out first.

far away from stuffed animals

Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital, male nude, nude with tags , , , , on July 6, 2009 by Daniel Allyn Lee

I wanted to work on something that was not stuffed animals and cute, twee monsters. I’ve been futzing with this digital collage for a while. I’m not convinced its absolutely finished but I think its very close.

i missed my day

Posted in abstract, Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital, Photography with tags , , , on June 24, 2009 by Daniel Allyn Lee

I was gonna post on Monday, but I got a bad back and my moms was in the hospital. She’s fine now and I got some pain pills. I think I’ll post some of my new monster paintings next week. Here is an abstract diptych of digitally altered digital photos. Just something I was futsing with. I peeled the dried paint out of a paint tray and took some shots of it. Then, I layered a few of them together.

TOO LITERAL?

unfinished

Unfinished, digital collage, 10″ x 13″, 2009

I’ve been very busy making dolls. I had this piece unfinished on my computer and decided to throw some words on it that I feel are relevant to me. I dunno if it comes across too heavy handed, sickeningly rainbow colored, or overly-literal but I don’t have time to think about it too much. I gotta go make some toys!

the opposite of regret

Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital on May 11, 2009 by Daniel Allyn Lee

This went through many permutations before I settled on this version. I’m not sure if the opposite of regret is reminiscence or hopeful expectation; either way I felt it fit well. This is an older paper collage reworked digitally into something new. I’m not sure why I keep doing this with old pieces but it is interesting to go back and reexamine decisions and see where different choices might lead.

The Greatest Digital Artists To Have Ever Lived

Posted in Art, digital, news, video with tags , , , , on May 6, 2009 by jdhastings

The title of this post is a bit of an inside joke, but is useful to frame some of the questions posed by a couple stories I’ve seen lately.

First, (courtesy of Art Fag City) is news that David Hockney is “painting” images on his iPhone (see above), then sells prints of them.

I’m undecided right now as to whether I’m more disappointed in Hockney for this, or anybody who would spend money on it. I mean, the image itself isn’t doing much to sell itself, so there must be some other factor going into it.

things I’ve done before

Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital with tags , , , on May 4, 2009 by Daniel Allyn Lee

I was working on a new collage. Well, a reworking of an older collage that would result in a new digital collage, but it just isn’t coming together yet and I want to spend more time with it.  So, I’m a bit late today in posting an old piece.  New work next time, I hope.
