This is more of a doodle-y drawing, blue ink pen on paper. I liked how it turned out. I’d love to do more of these, the same size drawing just on a much larger canvas; might be fun.

This is actually the first drawing I did for this daily drawing project that I started last week, but I just got around to inking it the other day. I ordered some new pens and I think they are helping me remember to vary my line weight.

(after the jump-more from last week and my illustration Friday drawing.)

In an effort to become better at illustration I’ve decided to commit to making at least one drawing a day for the next year or more. If I get stuck on what to draw, I’ll randomly select a word from the dictionary. I plan on posting my favorite drawing once a week online.
for this drawing the word was ‘eleventh’.

Well, I did my first craft show last weekend. It was fun but it rained a lot and I didn’t sell as much as I’d hoped. This last week I’ve been doing a little relaxing, organizing stuff, taking pictures and listing it on etsy and putting together some shipments to a couple of consignment shops. Now, I want to make some art and try and write a story book.
Anyway, here is something I started a while back with plans on finishing for the show but instead I finally got to today.

Hipster Monster, 8″x10″, digitally colored pen and ink
I’m still working hard on stuff for the upcoming craft show, I’ll have a booth at. This is just a fun lil sketch I decided to play around with in the computer. I’m hoping to concentrate a bit more on drawing and writing after this show next month.

I just ordered some post cards of this and another design. This one is three different sketches mashed together and colored on the computer.
I’m doing a craft show in the beginning of June. Its my first one; I figured I’d try one out and, see how I do and if I like it. Anyway, I’ll pry sell little sets of postcards plus, I plan to stick them in the bags instead of a business cards.
I’m already freaking out about not having enough time to get everything I want to do done. I plan to make a few collage/paintings between now and then, but mostly I will be sewing my face off.
This, I started a few months ago and I just decided to put the finishing touches on it yesterday. I think its funny. the background got a little dark on me. I’m definitely running with this collage, acrylic, illustration combination. I think, I just need to get comfortable with it and loosen up a bit.

communication, acrylic and collage, 11″ x 14″, 2010

Here’s a fun little drawing of a group of monsters, drawn in ink pen and colored on the computer. I’ll probably paint in the original with acrylic washes. Its kind of nice to be able to play around with the color first on the computer screen first. For some reason I love using the halftone filter on the color.

Here is a peek of the wooden idols I’m working on. They’re acrylic on wood and all around 12 1/2″ tall. I had three different designs cut and I’m close to being finished on all of them. I wanted them to be brightly colored, with lots of pattern and decoration and have a definite hand-painted look. I was loosely referencing Aztec, Indian, Asian, and Pacific northwest American Indian motifs with these and some other designs, I still plan on having cut out down the line.

I’m tired of being conflicted about working on character illustrations. I like it and I’m going to concentrate on it. I think I gained a snobby attitude about illustration back in college, where it seemed really important to differentiate art, design, and illustration with very clear lines. I think I’ve been a bit self conscious about not making ‘serious art’. I think you can make really interesting art using more populist themes. lowbrow, pop-surealism, reduced figuration, or whatever ya call it…
This painting was a little experiment in reusing a segment cut from and old painting in a new way. I think the characters are a bit stiff and the composition stinks, and it could use more dry brushing and washes in the background, but the colors work and I see potential. I’m calling it a first pancake and moving on.
I wanted to use pictures that I took for this is a digital collage. Most of them are nature shots from around my home. I tinted(tainted) all the pics with clippings of internet porn. I like playing around with source material especially with digital stuff.
