I’m only calling this a “work in progress” because there are still a few small tweaks and touch-ups to do here and there. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. I wish the purple in the lines would have come out more; they really look black unless you look at them in the right light. Otherwise I really like the colors.
I will definitely be making more paintings like this soon; although, they will all probably be smaller.

Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, Painting with tags acrylic, Art, cartoon, Painting, wip on June 13, 2011 by Daniel Allyn LeeHere’s another WIP pic of the painting I’m working on.

I’m not yet decided if I’m going to keep the star bursts white, or fill them in with color. I added them to break up the color a bit, but while I like them in the painting, I kind of miss the impact of all that color and how with the lines it confused the eye.
I’m really hoping to make some paintings that, while using cartoon elements, don’t only elicit the response, “Oh, that’s cute.”

Posted in Art, art fair, Daniel Allyn Lee, Painting with tags art fair, monster, Painting, wip on June 6, 2011 by Daniel Allyn LeeJust got done, this last weekend, with an arts and crafts fair. I was busy the last month preparing for it. It went great and I had fun, but I’m also glad its over. Now, I can work on some paintings; I’ve been staring at this roll of canvas for a month in anticipation. I did start a painting last week, that I was hoping to get done to use at the fair, but I didn’t have time to finish it. Now that I do have time, I’ve changed my plans a bit for it and hopefully I will post some finished pics soon. For now, here’s a couple WIP shots:

Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, Painting with tags Art, cartoon, Illustration, monster, paintings, show on May 2, 2011 by Daniel Allyn LeeThis is one of the pieces I did for the Meth & Hot Dogs 2 show at Lift designer toys and gallery in Royal Oak, Michigan, which is near Detroit. It opened on Saturday and from the photos it looks like a great show with a fun opening.

Form a Line Please, 11″ x 30″, 2011
This is a little more straight forward then I plan on working on in the immediate future, but I like it. I just bought a bunch of canvas and stretchers, and after a craft fair coming up in may I plan on concentrating on painting more. Til then, its sew, sew, sew, monsters, monsters, monsters, with maybe a little sketching in between.

But here’s an old collage I’ve been thinking of a lot lately while working on quilt piece for the show.

Posted in craft, Daniel Allyn Lee, design, digital, Illustration with tags Drawing, fabric, Illustration, monsters, pattern on March 14, 2011 by Daniel Allyn LeeI managed to get this group of monsters to wrap around after fiddling with them forever on the computer. I’ve wanted to try this for a while to get some fabric printed with my characters in the pattern. The pattern doesn’t match exactly, but close enough. I’ll probably just have a swatch printed with this exact pattern. I’ve had some fabric printed with monster faces before, that I made into dolls, but not an original drawn pattern. I’ll have to experiment more with.

Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital, Illustration with tags Collage, digital, monster, steph on February 28, 2011 by Daniel Allyn LeeI was inspired to try using the preview/detail photos by Steph to make a monster digital collage. The colors are a bit on the dark side, but I think it works. One of the drawings I used is an interior a tavern. I also included a sketch of some beer steins, just to be silly. (I didn’t get Steph’s permission to use her photos; I hope she doesn’t sue me.)

I think, I’m getting closer to what I want to do and where I want to be with these. Next, I want to use this particular approach in a painting, a paper collage, and maybe a quilt and see where it goes from there.

Posted in craft, Daniel Allyn Lee, Painting, Textile with tags craft, design, doll, fantasy, handmade, monster, toy, wizard on January 31, 2011 by Daniel Allyn LeeI made a couple test dolls. One of which is a custom mighty muggs monster; I got a bunch of blanks for cheap recently. The second is a Wizard I made from scratch using polymer clay, fabric, and batting all on a wire armature.

With the monster I wanted to try out my paint on, and gluing pieces onto a DIY doll like this. Its sort of like a munny, but by Hasbro. Then, with the wizard I wanted to try making a doll like this. I wasn’t too concerned with how he turned out I didn’t really do too much planning on him. The sculpting is pretty basic but he’s kind of cute. now that I know how thses will turn out I wall definitely attempt more involved designs for both.
still making monsters
Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital, Illustration with tags Art, digital, mosters, not art on January 3, 2011 by Daniel Allyn LeeHi, I haven’t posted much lately. I’m a bad blogger. I was pretty busy over the holidays making stuff for people. I’m still getting some holiday related projects wrapped up. I definitely made a new years resolution to make more art.
This is a digital collage that I never got finished. Then, looking through some sketches these monsters seemed to fit. So, I put them together.

If a disagreement does arise someone usually gets eaten alive so monsters just try to get along.
Here’s another study painting; some fun with color and a simple circle pattern.

Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, Painting with tags ape, computer, conflicted, Illustration, ohio, Painting on November 1, 2010 by Daniel Allyn LeeHi, I haven’t been around for a while. I had a show in Ohio last month and got really busy at the end of September. I got waaaay behind on my daily drawings and just didn’t have anything to share. It was a kind of nice have a break from art for a while.
I’m so over being conflicted about art vs. illustration vs. craft. I still want to make art, but I worry the kind of art I want to make won’t be taken seriously. I guess, its a silly thing to worry about. Anyway, I’m getting caught up on the Daily drawing project, but I’ll pry mostly keep that on my other blog. I do plan on doing other stuff, like a series of studies for larger paintings.

I’m just playing around with color and layering images right now.

Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital, Drawing, Illustration with tags fantasy, Illustration, paint, sketch, sword on August 23, 2010 by Daniel Allyn LeeThis week, for my daily drawings I’ve been concentrating on people instead of monsters. I’ll pry continue this theme next week too, although, I need to practice my perspective drawing. I’ve also been thinking about trying some paintings were I use my own drawings as I would a found image. I made these two digital colored drawings as kind of a sketch; one being a straight forward approach to color and the second a more arbitrary abstract approach.
I like the arbitrary one a lot and I would like to explore the idea in paint, as soon as I have time.

Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital, Drawing, Illustration with tags drawings, Illustration, monsters on August 9, 2010 by Daniel Allyn LeeThis week, I started to concentrate on embracing my weird a bit more. I think, I need to stop editing my ideas, trying so hard to be cute, funny or clever. Maybe its not a perceivable difference to anyone but me, but I’m really digging it and will probably continue for a while.

Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, Drawing, Illustration with tags Art, Illustration, monster, ohio on August 2, 2010 by Daniel Allyn LeeI’m working on about five new paintings for a small show in Ohio this October. These are a couple sketches for them. I wanted to do a few small grouping of monster and them a couple of the paintings will have large crowds of them. All of which will be surrounded by plush monsters on the wall.

I’ll post some of the actual paintings when they are finished.
