A lot of it, most of it, like most man-made stuff in general, is crap. Regretsy is my new favorite blog. Some of this is art. Well maybe very little of it is. The rat is kinda tasty.

Rat-eating plant.
What it does with the bones, I don’t know. Now if an obnoxious Donna Summer-playing neighbor-eating plant can be discovered, I’ll be set.

Posted in "But Is It Art?" with tags Ami Vitale, Doug Aitken, Jason Gray, Nikon D300s on July 30, 2009 by Jason GrayMaybe not, but Nikon just released their replacement for the camera that I currently own, and sent Ami Vitale out with one to record some video. Here are her amazing results:
When HD video was first introduced, I was highly skeptical and felt like it would somehow take away from the still-imaging prowess of future camera models. Now, I am beginning to come around, and seeing video like Ami Vitale shot from the camera that I will most likely upgrade to sooner or later, only helps to quicken the about face. Plus, seeing a lot of video work by artists like Doug Aitken is really making me interested in experimenting. See a trailer to one of his pieces after the jump.

German authorities are asking if a nazi-saluting gnome on exhibit in Nuremberg is in violation of the law. I can see this in my backyard garden in Brooklyn as a flippant bronx cheer to my loud, authoritarian, merengue-playing neighbors.
The artist has been overtly disingenuous about the potential socio-political provocativeness.

LizardMan Tips the Scales on Coney Island

Steph prompted the whole idea in an earlier post, but it was well past his show time when we got in the car. The fog was thick as soup and Meg and I were crawling around in the misty mess when finally we spotted the Circus Sideshow Freak Bar, and low and behold, there was Lizardman hmself, holding a post-performance chat with his fans and a few gecko groupies. He spoke of his sword swallowing techniques among other things, and we took some pictures. His dedication to his self-mutilation –– that is, uh, craft – is remarkable. Well, here are some shots.

This was Coney Island in the fog :

And then we meet Jim Morrison- uh, I mean, the Lizardman:

Ever since my father took me to Madison Square Garden, when I was 7, to see the Barnum and Baily circus I have been fascinated with it and the side show.
An artist and photographer, James Mundie, let me know about this.
There is an exhibition of human oddities and medical anomalies at a gallery in downtown Los angeles called the Todd Browning Gallery, named after the director of the classic horror film, “Freaks”. The gallery specializes in vintage and contemporary photography by international artists. The show is called Shock and Horror
Written Letter Project: Update Two
Posted in "But Is It Art?", Jason Gray with tags facebook, internet, Jason Gray, myspace, reality, written letter project on April 7, 2009 by Jason GrayToday, the time has come for me to delete my personal email address. The funny thing about my experiment is that I keep finding out about others who are embarking on similar adventures, away from the imaginary womb of the internet and back into the scary reality of, well, reality. Am I tapping into some collective subconsciousness, one wherein other people are also wondering what exact relevance all of this electronic interconnectivity has toward their lives? Or am I seeing, and engaging in, the start of a fad; a popular way of thinking, not unlike that which began myspace, and then harbingered the flood from Myspace to Facebook, et al? Some sort of actual Neo-Luddism? It is just as possible that I am placing too much emphasis on societal undercurrents that are best left alone, or at least ones that are not worth the time it takes to understand them. However, I can’t help but feel that there is a better, more fulfilling way to construct a conversation with another human being than by first logging in to something innately devoid of humanity and neglectful to the nuanced expressions of life. This is what I am in search of; I’ll let you know when/if I find it.
This week will begin my first round of sending out letters. It should be interesting to see what kind of reactions they solicit.
For the record, there has been some confusion about why, if I am trying to get away from the internet, I remain writing for this blog, and why I am keeping my business email/website/myspace profile. The answer is that I never intended this experiment to be about total versus zero internet exposure. What I am trying to gain is insight into what happens when you eliminate the extraneous exposure on the internet, and what you gain or lose from spending that time out in the real world. I realize that for my business to succeed, I need to have an online presence, therefore it remains; this blog on the other hand, is personal, but I see it also as functional, to both my art and my photography business.
Miniature Implantable Eyeball Telescope
Posted in "But Is It Art?", science, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags eye, prosthetic, technology, telescope, vision on April 4, 2009 by ssstephgThanks to my pal Daniel for sending this really cool link. Vision Care Opthalmic Technologies has developed a visual prosthetic device designed to correct or improve vision loss due to dysfunction of the macula. Basically, they implant a tiny telescope of sorts directly into the eye which functions to enlarge images 3X or 2.2X across the retina. The larger image is then focused on not just the damaged area of the macula, but on healthy tissue as well which allows the patient to see without blindspots. Wow! Telescopes, cameras, what’s next? So much potential! This sort of technology sends all kinds of exciting artsy sci-fi fantasies through my geeky little head. Thanks Daniel! -Steph Gerolimatos

I spent this last weekend in St. Louis, which is to be my new home, come May 1st. From all perspectives, this will be a good move, as it will allow my wife and I to save money, revolve around a smaller nucleus, have more space, do more things, etc.
Nonetheless, this post is centered around the photographs that I took while doing other things, this weekend. It is image heavy, so be forewarned… Read more »

Remember this post about the fabulous Smith College bathrooms? and that time I mentioned the cute bathrooms at The Carle and supplied a link to pics? Well it appears I’m not the only one with a peculiar fascination for arty water closets.
I present without further ado, The Art Museum Toilet Museum Of Art. Now doesn’t that name just stumble awkwardly off the tongue and then take a minute to digest? Regardless, they’ve accrued quite an impressive collection of art museum toilet photos. Aaayunnnd they’re looking for more. They’ve already got shots of the Smith College commode d’arte, but I didn’t see any from The Carle. Perhaps I should submit something.
