I may have mentioned earlier that I haven’t been in the best frame of mind lately. Well, yeah, that’s the way it is. And then it isn’t. And then it is again. A very smart, very kind friend of mine once compared living life to swinging on a pendulum. I’m paraphrasing, but he said something like, sometimes it’s hard to tell if your on an upswing or a down. It always stuck with me because it really is just like that. And some days, you just feel flat no matter what–like that Arp poem–the one in the first sketch below. Here are two sketches I did back in 1994. Both are about 30 x 20 inches They’re from the same series as these. These old works were kind of a jumping off point for some I’m doing now like the one above.

Anyway, I figure looking back and comparing past with present is appropriate enough right now what with the new year about to come in. Happy New Year, everyone.

Oozing WIP Update: Round 2

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on December 31, 2011 by ssstephg

Here’s a bit of progress on this one. Remember what it looked like before? Well, here it is now. It’s not a big change, but what with the holidays and feeling as if I’d rather hide in a dungeon than open my eyes most days lately, I figure any progress is good.

Hope you’re all enjoying your days more than a sharp stick in the eye and fingers crossed for a positive start to this next year!

Happy New Year. If you get wasted, hope its a good time.

Dead Wood, Auto-tune & Seasonal Binges

three elves Christmas 2011
Oh you know… “the holidays” are happening and all that so it’s time for wailing traditional songs about out of wedlock conception and excessive consumption. Time to kill trees and dress them up like two dollar hookers. Time to over-indulge in foods we pride ourselves on avoiding during the rest of the year and then resolve to quit them again once the calendar resets. GOD I LOVE THE HOLIDAYS!!! No I don’t. Well, sort of. I like the tree genocide part a bunch anyway. OK, not the genocide part, but the two dollar hooker bit. I like that part alot. I also like yowling off key with my more talented friends beside me to help make my voice sound passable because you know, auto-tune only does so much.

And so that’s what I did. I gussied up some dead wood and my friends allowed me once again to be dead wood on our yearly Christmas album. To be fair, making the album WAS my idea in the first place. Oh, and I design the album cover ever, too. It’s just that I am musically retarded, can play no instruments, and when singing require special attention in order to sound close enough to on key. Although one year I played the tambourine and that was OK. This is our sixth year making an album of four songs which we send out to torture a long list of friends and family. Would you like to hear it? It’s actually quite good despite me! Go ahead, give a listen! My pal Bodart does an amazing job recording, mixing, and making everything sound great.

Confession: I actually do like eating like a little piggie, too. So in fact, I suppose i do sort of love the holidays. Hope your days are happy regardless of what you believe and how you celebrate or don’t.

Ever see the Bloom County Christmas special A Wish For Wings That Work? It’s a pretty good one. Not the most festive scene, but this is one of my favorites.

Well, happy holidays and try not to give anyone rabies!

Miles Mausoleum

Posted in Art, film, Jason Gray, landscape with tags on December 24, 2011 by Jason Gray

As promised several weeks ago, here are some of the shots that I took on a visit to a nearby abandoned mausoleum. All photos were shot with a Bronica ETRSi and 75mm f/2.8 lens on Kodak T-Max 100 film. Images were scanned, which contributed to the funky color-cast, and appear completely unedited (save the watermark). I’ll include some scans from the final prints at a later time.

From Wikipedia:

Stephen Miles, a veteran of the War of 1812, was buried here by his son Stephen W. Miles. The mausoleum is located atop Eagle Cliff midway between Columbia and Valmeyer in what is known variously as Eagle Cliff Cemetery or Miles Cemetery. Due to its size and position on the bluff, the mausoleum is visible from several miles away, and has thus gained a prominent position in local legend. It has been a frequent target for vandals, and as a result all bodies were removed and reburied elsewhere; the fifty-six crypts are now empty and open, and the door to the mausoleum is gone.

Nice and Easy

When taking monotypes and working back into them with other media, I intend to allow the under-print to be an integral part of the process and have a dialogue with the fresh mark making. With this piece I fear I have pushed to far with the paint and the literal form. The most overt area revealing the print is the space on the right with amorphous cell-like blobs. That said, I like the spotty abstracted relationships and may accept this as sort of a red-headed step child, even though she’s a brunette.

Maps

Posted in Art, Collage, Toni Tiller with tags , , , on December 21, 2011 by Toni Tiller

In my search to find bigger things than magazines to cut up I came across an old map and thought I’d give that a try. I started by cutting out the perimeter of the land masses (the Netherlands were a bitch) and then started doing my interior cuts. This is essentially the exact opposite of what I would normally do because making the exterior cuts can usually weaken the structure of the paper, making interior cuts more difficult. In this case the paper was so large and of a more durable quality this has not been an issue so far.

The main thing I have learned from this so far is don’t take a photo of a complicated piece on a glass top table, with over head lighting, while using a cell phone camera.

Holiday Preview

Posted in Art on December 20, 2011 by jdhastings

I’ve been busting my ass the last few weeks preparing for Christmas. I’ve probably spent 12 a hours a day the last 3 days at the sewing machine. Both my thumbs have given blood to the cause, and I am ready to sit on a couch and do do nothing for a few days.

Because I’ve been working on gifts, I’m not going to show them all until after the holiday, but here’s a sample of the pieces I’m making for my family. I didn’t have time to polish the presentation.

These are little books made of different types of designs. This book features the semi-circle wave I use fairly often in various forms. Each book has 8 pages, including the covers, and the inside cover features a gift card.

taking a break

so … i’m in the studio today and will be packing up some supplies to take with me for the holiday break. i’ll be in the southern vermont area with very limited internet service so I’ll likely pass on next monday’s post. in the meantime, i’m thinking about my practice and how i’m moving away from photography and how it feels. if one has spent 30+ years in one discipline, how do you move through the discomfort of transition?

work in progress by stephg

I’ve had this piece sitting around, waiting for paint for months. This week, I started painting on it. There will be much, much more paint before it’s finished. It will likely end up with little resemblance to what you see here.  But I thought it might be fun to share progress shots of this one along the way. You can see a photo of it at an earlier stage after the jump.

Saturday Morning Cartoons: Meow Meow Meow Nyo!

Posted in Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 17, 2011 by ssstephg

In the mood for something cute and creepy and weirdly amusing? This Japanese cartoon from 1947 fits the bill nyo! PLease excuse me now. I’m off to dress my cats up in doll clothes and watch them play ring toss in all their bipedal splendor. Maybe i will even bottle feed them instead of making them struggle with their mini canteens nyo!

A monotype currently being revisited. Something about this makes me think of, remember fondly, my experiences in Turkey. I can’t tell you why.

So I Was Hanging Out

Posted in abstract, Art, Collage, Toni Tiller with tags , , , on December 14, 2011 by Toni Tiller

Working on collages, scalpel in hand and one of my friends was telling me a story about how he used to work on his grandfathers pig farm as a kid. He said his job was to sit around and hand castrate the little boy piglets with one swift, well placed cut and sometimes he’d have to do about 600 a day assembly line style.

While he was telling me I ended up making this.

I swear I didn’t do it on purpose.

Sweets! December 2011 Exhibit @ The Northampton Center For The Arts

“Excess”
mixed media
dimensions variable

Last night’s reception for the seventh annual Jane Lund invitational exhibit was, as always, loads of fun! The show features the work of fifty local artists. The art, all based on the theme “Sweets,” which is also the title of the show, is very diverse. Seeing how different artists interpret the theme is always entertaining.

Due to thick paint and it’s stubborn refusal to dry in a reasonable amount of time, I ended up showing one of my icky, hanging sculptures (pic above) instead of the tiny pieces I previewed here a few weeks back. It was a fine substitute though since the work is very influenced by food–desserts in particular. One of my goals with these pieces has been to make work that causes both feelings of attraction and revulsion, and if I am to judge by the feedback I’m getting from this one piece, I’ve succeeded. Yay!

And here are a handful of other photos of works from the show. Follow the jump to see more.

The last week and a half has been a blur of illness and commercial work. I have nothing new finished to post. So here’s an older monotype from the archives.
