Squiggly Collaboration 1

Posted in Art, Collage, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , , , , on November 29, 2011 by jdhastings

This last week I’ve been collaborating with co-Darteboardist Toni to combine some of my collage methods with her collage forms. Here’s a couple results. These are still very early in the process, but I think they have promise.

A similar, second version of this couldn’t be finished on time. We decided this is good enough, but the color choices obscure the form. Fortunately, you can see the form better in this smaller experiment with collaged fabric:

this is an example of the prints I’ve been playing with. the handcrafted experience as opposed to photography seems to resonate these days. all play in the studio is good! (this post is being written on an iphone…. ahhhh technological gadgetry)

Out Of Context: Small Strips Of Paint

Alongside my sculpture, I’m also making making these quick word paintings on strips of really nice scrap mat board. Some are bits of conversations taken out of context. Some are text I made up based on awkward interactions or silent insecurities or the sort of internal dialog that begins when the external dialog wanders into that confusing realm of “Whatever the fuck is going on here I will never understand.” These are sort of like what you might see if you opened one of my journals and I didn’t bust your head open before you had a chance to read a bit. I was inspired, in part, to turn them into paintings by my friend Daniel Allyn Lee who has a real knack for word art. So far, it’s been a fun project for me.

Nothing new here except a Friday Night Music Video by Salem (may want to turn your speakers down a bit). Tomorrow, I plan on exploring an abandoned mausoleum, so hopefully that will turn up some goodies for next week.

new work … no pics, yet

Posted in Art, art on paper, laelia e. mitchell, monotype with tags , , , on November 21, 2011 by laelia e. mitchell

i’ve been working with the monotype as a means for creative development and i’m finding the process to be a great way to both have fun AND mine some deeper ideas.  i’m not a trained printmaker and my forays into the plastic arts in college were abysmal.  yet, this time, i’m finding a real draw to printmaking in particular.  i can only guess it’s my inner finger painting child screaming for more attention …  yet, it might be a bit more.  my drive to pick up my camera has dropped to  all time lows and i spend more time drawing and playing with paints and papers than ever before.  additionally, i find little interest in looking a contemporary photography.  it all seems so contrived and well .. i dunno.  i’m sure to find my way back sometime.

so… while i’ve samples of this new direction, they’re all at my studio and i’ve not had a moment to foto them for this entry ( i know … what a loser)  i’ll be sure to post some soon

in the meantime …. this is a detail of an ink scroll 4″ x 48″

Little Art: Mini Icky

Think bonbons. Think icing. Think sugar. Think of that awful sick feeling you get when you eat too much, because that’s what I’m thinking while making these. Provided all things fall into place in such a way that I end up satisfied with the end result, these will be displayed in a group show in December at The Northampton Center For The Arts. The show is a yearly invitational exhibit curated by the lovely and talented Jane Lund. This year’s theme is “desserts.” I threw around the idea of a more literal approach since I do actually enjoy switching gears to representational painting every now and then. But in the end, I decided that since the work I’m currently making already fits the bill in a slightly off-beat way that I should just roll with it. Might as well appreciate serendipity when it lands in your lap like a warm cat on a cold night, right?

…and I apologize. It has just been really hard to post lately, and I haven’t done too much art-makin’ neither. Anyway, I hope to have something more for you all soon, but until then, enjoy this friday night music video.

P.S. I am looking for volunteers to pose for my next photo-series. So, if you can make it over to STL, I would love to take your picture!

Leafing through the archives of not-quite successful prints, I came across a good candidate. I didn’t document it in its original stage, as I haven’t really done for most of the pieces in this series, but suppose I should. I will, however, search for a slide of it, which I am almost positive I have catalogued somewhere in the cave I call my studio.

I’m not isolating the printmaking paper with hide glue or gesso or anything. It should last at least until a meteor hits the earth, destroying civilization as we know it.

Electro-Collage

I may have posted this before but I don’t have anything finished today so you get it again. An electronic collage of painting scraps re-assembled in photoshop. This is a few years old and what really stands out to me is that the type of pattern in this has moved into my physical work and that I’m much better at it now.

still feel like s#*t …

Posted in Art, banksy, laelia e. mitchell with tags on November 14, 2011 by laelia e. mitchell

it’s been 3 days since i returned from an overseas trip that involved 18+ hours of travel each way and spanned 9 time zones and i still am flummoxed.  during my trip however, i had the great fortune of seeing a bunch of films; “exit through the gift shop” , “the world according to anish kapoor”, “looking for lowry” and “basquiat: a life”.  all were really interesting art films and i highly recommend them.  additionally i viewed “chasing madoff” and the hilarious “greatest movie ever sold”.  all good and all worth seeing.

as far as making art … well i’m still in a cycle of experimenting with different mediums.  i did take my camera on my travels, however, the ONLY picture i took was at the hotel as i was leaving – pathetic.  i’m heading to the studio today and hopefully a bit of my “art self” will appear.  until then below are a couple of phone fotos …

Pink Circle Chain Link

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on November 12, 2011 by ssstephg

sketch by stephg
8 x 10 inches
ballpoint pen, acrylic and soft pastel on all rag matboard

You may remember that I default to circles. Here I am doing it again. If you think of the outline of a circle as a route that ends where it begins (and you are me) you may also be able to see the circle as a metaphor for acceptance, and a reflection of a recurring pattern of existence. This helps explain (to me, at least) why I return to the shape again and again.

Again and again,

Improvisation, Art, Life, Freedom

Posted in Art with tags , , , on November 10, 2011 by jdhastings

This is a profound lecture by George Lewis. To explain who Lewis is would be complicated. He began as a jazz trombone player, but has become as much a theorist in philosophy, art and technology. This lecture covers the idea of improvisation, but contextualizes it in such a way that breaks down easy comprehension of the concept. He covers how computers can both improvise and be considered free actors while doing so, the concept of freedom itself in terms of improvisation and the relationship between the immediate act of improvisation and the full breadth of history. It’s an incredible talk that will probably require multiple views for me to really grasp.

Stripes

Posted in Art, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , on November 8, 2011 by jdhastings

These are all made of masking tape made to get patterns on canvas. They’ll be used in future quilts. Clearly it’s time to switch up the straight lines I’ve been using with some curves, dots and such.

Flesh In Pixels

digital collage
Because of things and stuff, I spent far too much time this week. I spent it and now it’s gone. If time were money, I’d be broke. I have no idea what it means in this context that I AM broke. Anyway, as you can see,I fucked around with pixels instead of paint.

Completed Quilts

Posted in Art, Collage, craft, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , , , on November 1, 2011 by jdhastings

This weekend I finished working with the quilts I posted last week.

Green copy White copy Orange copy

Before starting these I had been having trouble getting started with these types of quilts. For a few weeks I’d had several false starts, or completely partial pieces that I wasn’t comfortable using on their own. Finally one night I began idly working the green part of this piece:

Green copy
Each piece is 26″ x 26″, acrylic and paper collage quilted together.

I actually got a good 18″ x 18″ of it done. The next night I realized it was too green, as I mentioned last week, but the process had put me back in the flow of the process. The form in these is one I’d been meaning to return to. What followed was a relatively rapid process of completing the 3 pieces, cutting them up Friday night and finishing them Saturday.
