i have little today …

Posted in Art on October 31, 2011 by laelia e. mitchell

just an iphone pic.  i’ve been working for pay this past week and the time spent at the studio was mostly … well just time spent sitting doodling and listening to music.  while i’d imagined unparalleled creative output once i had a studio outside my house, the reality is that everything is different.  how i see things, what i’m interested in doing … it’s all new.  and a bit frightening may i add.  that said, i head off to lands far away this weekend for work.  so either, they’ll be a bunch of new things to post  or i’ll be so jet lagged that i wont know that next monday has passed.

so … til either next monday … or not, here’s a wonderful quote/image from … of all places … facebook

Accepting that it’s impossible to always feel grounded might be a good idea.

Sub-Quilts

Lately I’ve been trying to do more of the types of quilts I started the year working on, but I’ve been having issues with color schemes. I have Piles of canvases lining my dropcloth divided into rough colors (Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange, Neutral) that are supposed to help me with this, but this actually just tends to limit me to a single hue. When I try to start combining the colors together, the combinations start getting too complicated to control.

Green

Color schemes like this work well, but are harder to herd than you might expect. Complements make each other brighter, so the pieces you thought was underplayed prior to adding it suddenly become stark when sewn together. At that point the rest of the quilt becomes a series of reactions trying to wrangle the color scheme back from noise. If you become too conservative, though, the colors wash out into uniformity. This can be good at times when you want to emphasize the pattern of a quilt, but in chaotic patchwork of a hundred tiny pieces, you lose your focal point.

My response has been to work in more uniform fields, which I can then combine in larger, easier to control forms later. That’s what these are. I need to finish another color or more and then will make 3-5 pieces out of them, with overall shapes defining them. They will each end up 28″ square, but I need to add 4 inches to the green one.

seeing dots …

Posted in Art on October 24, 2011 by laelia e. mitchell

so this is what im working with … i know crazy huh?  just sitting in the studio making dots on a long roll of rice paper.  it’s likley going to become some sort of scroll, or something.  i dunno.  i just kept making these marks on the paper and thinking about .. well nothing.  it’s quite liberating. i’ll keep you updated on the scope of the scroll.  it’s presently 4″x 48″.  i’m considering taping another length on to expand it to 96″.  it might push me into some sort of psychotic break, but some of the best work has emerges from absurd beginnings.  of course so has some of the worst!

on the topic of process … i had the opportunity to see the willem de kooning retrospective at the museum of modern art, ny.  remarkable to see the development of a vision over so many years and periods.  i chose to visit not because i’m such a fan of de koonings, but for the unique chance to see how he emerged over time.

Whoever is in charge of setting up my scanner should really get on that. And buy me a new printer. This is getting annoying.

I’m not sure I’ve posted this before. This was originally created as a wedding gift for a close friend. Because of it’s dimensions, I’ll post a smaller version with a some bigger versions of 2 of the components after the jump for anybody looking for details.

Each part of the triptych is 10″ x 10″. While I didn’t really try anything radically new in these, it’s still one of my favorite pieces in terms of color relationships that I’ve made.

new ways to think about art

Posted in Art, art on paper, block print, laelia e. mitchell, printmaking, rice paper, work on paper with tags , , , on October 17, 2011 by laelia e. mitchell

i’ve been able to spend a fair amount of time in the studio this past week and what has been organically emerging is a distinct move towards other ways of expressing myself besides photography.  while making images using light (the camera) will always form the foundation of HOW i see, how i EXPRESS what i see is shifting.  the fun of exploring block printing with my “networks we love” series or my obsessively relaxing dots using sumi ink of japanese rice paper …these activities seem to provide a much needed re-jiggering to my studio practice.  now, WHERE this is going is unimportant.  i decided that the “studio practice” is what i’ll focus on instead of the hustle to show, however, the need to have a direction will emerge.  WHEN  … i don’t know, and HOW this will take shape … i have not the faintest idea.  all i know is … i keep making dots, printing words using inks on paper wondering wtf it’s all about.

below is the 7th in the series “networks we love”  a collection of wifi networks names gathered from my travels and from asking twitter, google+ and facebook connections.  block prints : image is 4×6 printed on 9×12″rice paper.  edition 5

Here’s a closeup of another sculpture. Again, I’m being stingy with my art. I would apologize, but it won’t change anything. I still feel a need to keep this mostly to myself. But the detail pic is kinda pretty at least, isn’t it? It’s pretty or gross I suppose, depending on your perspective. In the interest of pretending to be generous, I will post a couple more photos after the jump. Read more »

Ann-Maree Walker: Almost Like Being There

Posted in Art with tags , on October 14, 2011 by Jason Gray

Recently, I photographed the installation of Ann-Maree Walker’s new site-specific work, Almost Like Being There, which will remain on display through October 21st at the Luminary Center for the Arts in St. Louis. Incidentally, I also photographed the image for her promo card (see above).

All photographs, Nikon D300 with either the Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G, Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G, or Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-x Pro lenses.

Cole in Yer Stocking

Posted in Art, awesome, oil painting, Painting, Tom Bennett with tags , , , , , , , on October 13, 2011 by Tom Bennett

I’ve been away without art materials so I have nothing but this image of a painting by the 19th century painter Thomas Cole to post. It’s part of a series called The Course of an Empire, this being “Destruction”. As far as I’m concerned, its as good a symbol of the fate of contemporary western culture as any. Later, it’s my bed-time.

I did not create this. Nor do I produce it. I assure you I have never been anywhere near this. I simply present it to you for your consideration. I won’t tell you what it is, but you can probably figure it out.

I’m posting this instead of art because I haven’t had time, my scanner still doesn’t work, the NBA season may not happen, and I’m having some issues with other utilities. As such, I feel this is more apt to send into the world, than any old piece I could locate in my flickr.

columbus day …

Posted in Art, digital, laelia e. mitchell, Photo-Impressionism, Photography, Work in Progress with tags , , , , , on October 10, 2011 by laelia e. mitchell

so this is the day that good ole chris columbus invaded the native peoples lands, brought all manner of disease and claimed ownership of said property.  sounds like our financial industry!  so in honor of that, i’m going to close my bank of america account and find a credit union, get outside and embrace my liberation … and not celebrate columbus’s rapacious ways.

Long Weekend Itinerant

14 x 11 inches
acrylic on 4 ply all rag mat board

Seeing as this is Columbus Day weekend, I am probably off being very busy picking apples, finding my way through corn mazes and searching out Columbus. In the spirit of the holiday, take a look at this sketch and let me know what you discover. Apparently, it is harboring such delights as a heart, a hematoma, porn, mammal meat, aquatic life, extreme weather, and unholy nods to the birds and the bees. What do you see? Say dead people and I’ll squish you like a bug.

More Men (not Mormon)

Posted in 35mm, Jason Gray with tags on October 7, 2011 by Jason Gray

Last week, I posted a pic from a new series of photographs that I am working on. This week, I am showing off more shots of some of the men from the series, and next week, I hope to have some of the women ready to put on display. It is interesting to me to observe how differently the women versus the men approached posing for this; the women had a sort of default “pose-face” whereas the men kind of let their guard down a bit more. I guess that’s culture….

All Nikon N80 with the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G lens and Kodak T-Max 400 film. Prints are on Adorama-branded, variable-contrast, fiber paper. Please excuse my dusty and orientation-moody scanner.

Silvermine Art Center in New Canaan, CT is organizing a fundraising event it has hosted for 10 years now, Signed, Sealed and Delivered. It’s an art sale and auction designed for collectors and art lovers featuring over 500 small, 4″ x 6″ original works in all media for sale at $50 each, to benefit the Center’s programs and outreach.

I’m contributing these 3 tiny paintings, all oil over monotype on Rives BFK printmaking paper. I rarely, if ever, paint this small with oil and I find it to be a disciplined exercise in control and direct manipulation of materials and form. Hellzalotta of fun.

Two For One

Posted in Art, events, Toni Tiller with tags , , on October 5, 2011 by Toni Tiller

Those that have been with us for awhile might remember that I am in charge of the art department for Minks to Sinks. It is essentially a giant tag sale and I spend days in my little tent pricing a few thousand frames and framed posters, and when I’m lucky a few original pieces. It’s a tight space but I’m happy to be there because without fail a monsoon hits us every sale. It’s our version of a rain dance and we often joke that we should take it on the road to drier climates because we are sure to bring the clouds with us. I took this from the safety of my spot, check it out.

It was a mess, but we all just keep our grease pencils in hand and carry on.

Every sale I allow myself to choose two pieces to bring home, it is always the very best and the very worst piece I can find. This time I think I managed to combine them, what do you think of my treasure? I think at 2 bucks you can’t beat it.
