Actual Size (I Think)

Posted in Art, Collage, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on September 7, 2011 by Toni Tiller

During one of the discussions on how best to approach reproducing these for the internet the point was brought up that they look different at their actual size. My thought at the time was to post them larger so they would be more easily seen, but that also magnifies the flaws that aren’t as visible in person. Now I have a 17 inch screen, and I am sure that if yours is bigger, or smaller it might throw this whole idea out of whack, but if that is the case you can just grab your average 2.5 x 3.5 inch baseball trading card and imagine this image over it. They are small.

I like this one by the way, it’s going in the direction I was hoping for more of in my last post. The lines are delicate loops and the gradated pink over the gray adds an uneasiness that reminds me of glare on a photo, but which is really only the color as it is.

These are the remaining Volcanos I made last month. They probably aren’t as good as the originals, and I forgot to scan 2 of them better ones cutting them up again, but such is life.

labored day

Posted in Art on September 5, 2011 by laelia e. mitchell

this last week has been filled with the tasks of moving into my new studio.   packing, trashing, packing, packing, trashing …. you all know the score.  needless to say, neither art work nor much thinking about art has taken place.  the last thing i produced is the first in what will be a long project … collecting network names and block printing them.  i recently started to block print … another path taken to shake up my art making … and have found it to satisfy a number of creative urges.  i can hand craft something … i can then make reproductions of them … not disimilar to photography in the democracy of multiples … and it’s sorta cheap and doesn’t require much equipment.  the “network project” is really a knock-off of michelle vaughn’s 100 tweets which is a wonderful project mixing the age-old craft of letterpress with contemporary interent activities.  it’s a brilliant project … mine not so brilliant yet, i’m having fun

video still from the vid below
Here. This is another abstract video featuring one of my hard working sculptures. I am learning something new and (hopefully) getting closer to figuring out how I want these to function every time I work on a new one.

Thanks for looking!

Zoo of the Uncanny

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , on September 2, 2011 by Jason Gray

So I was walking through the Saint Louis Zoo the other day, and I turned around to witness the strange Arbusian scene of a little girl trying to coax a small flock of exotic birds to be her friend. After taking the picture above, I started to think about how really strange the whole zoo environment is, with all of the animals tidily on display for their (often disgusting) human counterparts to look at, all wild-eyed. The zoo is a fantastically odd place, and I tried to snap a few photos that relayed this feeling that I was having at the time. Enjoy.

All Nikon D50 with Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-x pro lens.

Dark Trade: New Coat of Paint for Old Print

I’m continuing to take old and not particularly successful monotypes and reworking them with oil paint. It’s not quite working here perhaps because I haven’t resolved the relationship of the figure and its treatment with the breaking up of the picture plane. The shapes are not jiving, but I do like the figure.
