Sunday Sidewalk Doodles: ArtCar VroomVrrroom

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on July 31, 2011 by ssstephg

In the interest of expanding categories until they become so inclusive as to mean almost nothing, this week’s edition of Sunday Sidewalk Doodles features an artcar I stumbled upon in the Whole Foods parking lot yesterday! The hell’s that got to do with sidewalk doodles you may ask. Welll, the car’s trunk was painted with chalkboard paint and the owner had affixed a container of chalk for anyone so inclined to doodle on the board, and doodle we did! Just a small bit of doodling was done actually. The real point of interest is the car which was decorated in rough glittery pink paint punctuated by puffy, frosting-like script that spelled out sayings like “put peanut butter on your pancreas” and “It’s not who you love but how you love that counts” and “PLUR” and stuff. I suspected the owners might be the handsome stylish young gay couple I noticed in the cheese aisle because of the one’s snappy colorful but understated ensemble complete with stripey socks. And I kinda wanted to wait out in the blazing parking lot to confirm or allay this suspicion, but my chauffeur has even less endurance for such stalker-ish nonsense than I and so the artist/s remain/s a mystery. Now, pics! Enjoy!

I kept noticing and really liking this little detail on one of my in-the-works sculptures. Thought you might like it, too.

Work in progress, not sure I like it, but whatever.

Yet More Dillas

Posted in Art, Collage, J. D. Hastings with tags , , , on July 26, 2011 by jdhastings

I told you I had 9 more of these.

I still plan to crank out more editions of different prints but fell behind this week even as I make it harder for myself by making more complicated source materials to go into these… which are still intended to be source material for another project I should be working on. Anyways, I’m wearing down a bit. Fortunately I had these ready to go.

All are mixed media, 11″ x 8.5″

These are basically made with leftover parts from the last batch. In those, I cut out the shape of each layer below it. These are the shapes that were cut out. The only added element in these is the background I mounted them on. As with any batch made in volume some of these are much better than others.

A little because that’s all I got. Here you get to see the artist at work kinda like a monkey at the zoo. Like my heat wave work smock? It matches the art. Pretty stylish, eh? And here is a detail of part of the WIP.

OK, I’m off to do some stuff and things now. See ya later.

Not a Lot New

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , , , on July 22, 2011 by Jason Gray

I don’t have any new art to share this week, so I will take a moment to remind anyone local to head on over to my studio and see me on the 30th.

Here’s your friday night music video:

The Life And Times Of Matvey Matveich

Posted in Art, events, Toni Tiller with tags , , on July 20, 2011 by Toni Tiller

I actually worked on some art this week, but not enough to show you all anything. A likely story, I know, but I swear it is true. But in other news I’ll be participating in a show next week (along with Tom Bennett), and I will also be hanging it, and by hanging it I mean pointing at walls and telling sweaty guys to “put that one up there…no, more that way, um yeah. wait. no, lets put it back over here…”

Here’s the run down on the show, a fun idea built around a fictional person.

“DUC presents a pre-launch affair celebrating the Life and Times of Matvey Matveich, with original art pieces and performances.

We found the old suitcase behind an abandoned train station in Stavropol containing an old VHS, a damaged journal, and some bank statements. Upon viewing the tape we realized we had come across the belongings of a very mysterious individual.

Who is Matvey Matveich? Where is he now? Eleven artists, assembled under the order of the grand Duke, set out to discover just that.

Guest List: Co-hosted by Patrick Duffy, Jason Thome, Geoffry Payton, and Fixx Invictus.

Featuring: Alexcalibur, Fixx Invictus, Bretlan Weaver, James Curtright, Jazmine Catasus, Joanne Weaver, Therese + Joel, Toni Tiller, Tom Bennet, Paul Cupo, Gio Black Peter, Emil Martirosian, Nikita Shoshensky.

Live performance by: Alexcalibur, Joanne Weaver, and Fixx Invictus.

Theatre Bar, located in TriBeCa, is Albert Trummer’s cocktail fantasy world where Moulin Rouge meets Death & Co. A true playground for artists, and drinkers alike to meet and create the moments that make New York the extraordinary city that it is.”

Hope to see some of you there!

Ring of Fire

I guess these aren’t special anymore.

I spent the weekend making 18 new Volcano collages as source material for the same project I made last week’s J Dilla collages (in addition to the 9 in this post, 9 more were drying as I was prepping these for posting).

Volcanos107 Volcanos108 Volcanos104

In general these were more problematic than the Dillas. I used more elements that had already been collaged in these (see the concentric circles, wavy lines and Q-Bert squares in some of the pieces). Additionally, the design itself is a lot more detailed than the Dillas. Thicker materials plus more detailed cuts mean more headaches with the cutting machines. I had to throw out 1/4 to 1/3 of the materials I tried to cut. That doesn’t matter much when it’s a sheet of newspaper, but is a real pain in the ass when you have to throw out a collage that took a few hours in itself to create.

The results are generally worse than last week. I think 2 of these came out well, The rest range from serviceable with reservations to kind of terrible. Strangely, the 9 I prepped yesterday seem more successful despite being made of the spare parts from this. Anyways, I got the 1 or 2 that I’ll need for the larger project.

City-Wide Open Studios

Posted in 35mm, abstract, Art, art fair, awareness, Drawing, Jason Gray, Painting with tags on July 15, 2011 by Jason Gray

Every year, the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis sponsors an event that brings the art viewing public directly to local artists. The premise behind City-Wide Open Studios is for St. Louis’ artists to open their studio doors in an organized fashion, choreographed by CAMSTL, so that art viewers, art buyers and art interlopers have the chance to peruse the local talent at hand.

This is the first year that I will be participating, so come out and show me some support. I will have dozens of paintings, drawings, and photographs on display. I will be showing on Saturday, July 30th, and my studio is located at 3434 Magnolia Avenue in Tower Grove East.

The event kicks off with a reception for the artists at “the Contemporary” (information from CAMSTL’s site below).

JULY 26TH. 6:00-9:00 PM.

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, NO RSVP REQUIRED. CASH BAR. 3750 WASHINGTON BLVD.

To kick-off the week-long celebration of local art, CAM will be hosting an Open Studios Preview Party where visitors can visit CAM’s Main Galleries to see one piece of artwork by each participating artist. For that night, and the entire following week, each piece of art will be displayed with a label of the artists name and number that corresponds with the printed map – allowing the public to see the artwork beforehand and map out their weekend studio visits. Join CAM and over one hundred local artists for a night of celebrating the local art scene and all that it has to offer. Pi on the Spot – Pi’s mobile pizza truck – will be selling mini pizzas all night!

Another quick sketch between lunch and the next thing.

I’m thinking about the cottage and the lobster and the sea. Not that this image necessarily says that.

Top Secret!

Posted in Art, Collage, Toni Tiller with tags , on July 13, 2011 by Toni Tiller

I am participating in a Twitter print exchange that is being organized by the very cool @laeliamitchell and 7 other people, including our own @j_d_hastings and some of our other Twitter pals some of whom I don’t know at all. I love projects like this, it’s such a fun way to connect with other artists, especially the ones I don’t know because there will be nothing but surprises arriving in the mail and I’m always excited by the prospect of fleshing out my art collection even further. Since I don’t want to spoil the surprise of what I am making for anyone else you will just have to wait*.

*There really is an art swap, and I really don’t want to spoil the surprise, but this also may or may not be a minor ruse to cover up the fact that I have no art this week. Maybe. You’ll never know for sure. But if you really have your heart set on seeing something you can go check out my ex-husbands latest project, a graphic novel just getting off the ground about the joys of being a professional bird watcher here.

Grippa Dillas

Posted in Art, art on paper, Collage, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , on July 12, 2011 by jdhastings

I made 9 of these simple J Dilla Collages this weekend to help with another project. I made so many in order to ensure that I got 2 that met my needs. I got that, so now I’ll find a way to group the rest and either sell them or give them away. I actually have another 8 drying right now (a byproduct of making these actually). I’m going to be spitting out a lot of different collages like this the next few weeks.

First, a group of 4:

4Dillas
Each Dilla is about 10 x 7. Multimedia.

Close Ups:

JDilla068

JDilla070

JDilla072

These are the best 4 to me, hence including them in a set. After the jump I’ll include the other 4, including the 2 I’ll be using in the future product. I didn’t use the best ones for that product because they’re going to be cut up further so there’s not as much reason to.

Quick Painting: Under Water & Short Of Breath

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , on July 9, 2011 by ssstephg

art by Steph Gerolimatos

18 x 9 inches
acrylic, purple flocking fiber, red ballpoint pen and graphite on all-rag board

I did this sketch the other day while the paint on what I really wanted to work on stubbornly refused to dry. And although I was irritated at the time, I really do understand. Extreme humidity can suck the energy to do anything out of anyone… or anything. Hell, I was barely able to muster the energy to breathe that day. Gills might have helped, but wearing mine always reminds me of that awful movie Waterworld so I generally keep them tucked away–out of sight, out of mind. Also, I didn’t manage to stay dry myself so how can I possibly expect more from my art? Right. It makes no sense, any of it. Flocking hell.

I Can Smell Your Buffalo Wings From Here

Posted in Art, Drawing, Toni Tiller with tags , , on July 6, 2011 by Toni Tiller

This is my stab at making art this week, please note the new surface of choice. I predict that this is the onset of a new trend and soon everyone will be drawing on stryrofoam left over containers, you just wait.

When I’m not busy revolutionizing the world of art trends I’ve been putting together boxes of goodies to send out to some of my friends from my vintage windfall. Fabrics, yarns, sewing supplies, and weird things I can’t identify will soon be hitting the post office and making their way to other parts. The woman I inherited these from was unique and prolific, and I am sure she would be pleased to see these things make their way out of the attic and into the studios of other artists. First I gotta sort it all though.

16 Dualities

Posted in Art, Collage, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , , on July 5, 2011 by jdhastings

This may be the biggest and most substantial single project I’ve ever taken on for myself.

16 Dualities

“16 Dualities” 40″ x 40″ acrylic and multi-media on canvas with safety pins.

Each of the component pieces of this work are miniature versions of this work, which itself was one of the most challenging pieces I’d taken on.

The challenge is, if you look at each piece’s 2 colors one at a time, you hopefully notice that they each have their own hole in them, and that the 2 holes link with each other. This is accomplished by weaving 2 entirely autonomous pieces that cross over each other.

Unfortunately, this was the piece where I learned the benefits of using lighter wood for the frames if I’m going to attach them all. The entire piece weighs so much I’ve never even attempted to hang it and may choose to display them separately, if the occasion arises.

After the jump I’ll post a close up of one of the pieces and some of the alternative patterns I was thinking of aranging these in. It turns out that exercise is similar to some of the considerations you have in regular quilting.
