I’m tired and when I’m tired I throw stuff down on paper and slop it around, pretending that my subconscious has something to do with the chaotic garbage that is left.
But is it art?
Humans are full of sh*t , huh?

This week we’ve had a change with the blog, I’m sad to say that Daniel (aka Happy Cloud) is leaving us. He said his work and interests were going in a different direction and this wasn’t a good fit for him anymore. We’ve enjoyed his company here immensely and wish him the best in his pursuits, we were lucky to have him for as long as we did.
At the same time I kinda get it because I have struggled with the same thing. I’ve got about a million projects going right now and most of them are not directly art related, at least not art with a capital A, you know fine art, the good stuff. These days I’m trying to get things renovated, start a freelance business, and just keep up with the ridiculous pace I’ve set for myself that I don’t see changing any time soon. If anything it is only going to get worse.
So I ask myself if I still fit in here too. Maybe, maybe not. I like being here, the other authors have been my friends for years and I’m really reluctant to give up this blog, I enjoy the deadline even as I bitch about it in my head every week. So now I wonder if there is a way to make this work for me even without a fine art post every week. I could link to other people’s work, that’s always a quick option, but what I’m leaning toward more than that is seeing if I can find the art in what I’m doing from week to week, because for me it’s all about the approach. The same thoughts, questions, critical processes, and design decisions take place if I am making a print, a collage, working on my house, or doing a big clean out job for someone else. More time is needed to see if it can play out or if I’m just going to bore the pants off of you with my domestic projects and potential lack of visuals. I guess we’ll find out.
Another piece made by painting other pieces on top of it.
“Charlie Brown Sweater Dropcloth” I don’t know how big it is. ~30 inches wide? Acrylic on Canvas.

I posted the rough sketch that became this last week.
Here’s the result, now collaged with a mix of paint, fabric and print media. This is 1 of 16 tiles for a large piece I’m making for a friend (hence the curved edges where it’ll be joined to another tile). It’s 12: x 8″ more or less.
In it’s current state it’s a lot harder to read what’s going on. The worm head stands out, but the body doesn’t. The dust clouds fade into each other. On the other hand, it’s still kind of pretty, and I don’t entirely mind that the represented object isn’t totally clear. It’s something the viewer can work on if they want to.
I still reserve the right to make changes if I feel like it, but I’m satisfied for now.

I’m only calling this a “work in progress” because there are still a few small tweaks and touch-ups to do here and there. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. I wish the purple in the lines would have come out more; they really look black unless you look at them in the right light. Otherwise I really like the colors.
I will definitely be making more paintings like this soon; although, they will all probably be smaller.

I started out with the intent of filling a Tumblr request for an octopus attacking a boat. Problem was, it was way too hot for eight legs that day. I quit after three legs and no boat. Then later when it cooled off a bit, I came back and finished up what I could before it got too dark to see. I’ll have to give this one another shot soon.

Some of you might recall a series that I started several years ago, and that was somewhat erroneously referred to as “Photo-Impressionism”. In any case, here is a slight expansion on that old, abandoned project; picked back up in the city where it began. Enjoy.

This week the weather decided to turn rainy so I had the opportunity to get back to cutting up some paper. I worked a little bit on JD’s book that I have had in my possession for far too long, but got a little stuck so moved on to something else. For awhile I have been thinking about exploring the layering of some very fine lined pieces in much more subtle color choices. This is one that is in progress and needs a few more layers to pull it together, but in the end I am hoping it will evoke some kind of floral
something or other.
I’m in a bad mood. I didn’t sleep well and when I finally did fall asleep I dreamt about not being able to fall asleep. Then I’m out of tea, my computer is running slow and AN ENTIRE SCHOOL OF CHILDREN was in my way as I tried to exit the BART station to get to work.
Also, I apparently forgot to upload my image for today up to Flickr and I stupidly left open an opportunity to play an X in 2 directions on a triple letter score on Words with Friends. I am a bottle of pure distilled rage this morning and hate everything.
Here’s a quick drawing of the worm from Dune that I made into a collage I can’t post. The little figures suck. I get it.

Here’s another WIP pic of the painting I’m working on.

I’m not yet decided if I’m going to keep the star bursts white, or fill them in with color. I added them to break up the color a bit, but while I like them in the painting, I kind of miss the impact of all that color and how with the lines it confused the eye.
I’m really hoping to make some paintings that, while using cartoon elements, don’t only elicit the response, “Oh, that’s cute.”
Here’s a video I’m working on. It’s not really a cartoon. I know you’re shocked. Please try to roll with it.
I shot the video and then made the sound to go with it. The sound is built using loops in GarageBand which is a program I’m just learning (through trial and error) how to use. I kinda rushed through last night to get a version uploaded so I could post it here. In the process, I learned that saving files as mp3s can change them quite a bit. My friend tells me this has something to do with the file being compressed and something something something. It was late and I don’t remember. So the levels are off, and well, there’s more work to do, but any comments are most welcome just the same.
It’s like and not like the previous two videos I posted. Links here and here for comparison.
Thanks for looking.

It’s the beginning of what many climatologists say is a long period of climate change and hot summers in this hemisphere. Its hot here in New York and I wearily prepare for the heavy clammy dampness and the heat and the high electrical bills. So this image is a mild counteractive to that. I am thinking of Cape Cod Bay and its temperate tone , yet the warm yellow may mitigate even this attempt at the cool.

I’ve been busy busy busy lately. My friend has decided to get rid of one of his houses and invited me to raid it for plants/rocks/supplies and since all those things, especially plants, are expensive I’m going to happily take him up on it. What it means is I spend most days right now loading up The Pig (my Chevette) going over to his house digging up plants and rocks and moving them to my house. Repeat.
So far I’ve moved about 60 plants, and I probably have another 70 or so to go, and since this doesn’t leave a lot of time to cut paper and make collages I am going to label this a design project and post it here. Title – My House, Size – 2.25 acres, Medium – Mixed Media.
This is my little cat house, which I have posted on Twitter before, but it’s had some changes and has now been landscaped with some variegated shrubs and a lot of Hosta, which hopefully the deer won’t eat. I swapped out the previous “deck” for a more natural wood plank. I’m thinking a few more plants and rocks, and maybe a slate walkway leading up to the plank.

This is a piece of woven metal that was gifted to me which I have decided to incorporate as a lattice for some climbing plants and a little Vinca will be coming soon too.

And this is where some new shrubs, Rhododendron and Azaleas were dug in and now I need to make a rock retaining wall along that dark dirt line. Hopefully it will be finished today.

I was laid up this weekend with a twisted ankle so decided to make a quick book for this.
In a hurry, I went to my standby, the target, with a line through it that rotated clockwise over the course of 6 pages. I hadn’t made a book comprised of actual premade quilts before, so this was a nice exercise. The whole thing is about 8″ x 8″ I think. Maybe 7″. It’s made of Acrylic on Canvas, drawings and pre-printed collage materials sewn together.
Here’s the progression:

I’ll post larger images after the jump.
Here’s the covers. I had to take these while at work.:

Front Cover

Ready to ship. In theory. In practice I had to buy a huge sticker that covered up my handwriting and got smudged and may not have fit right.
So there’s a healthy chance this never ends up anywhere.
Bigger images of the inside after the jump.
