Heavy Metal!!

Posted in 35mm, abstract, Art, Jason Gray, Photography with tags on May 6, 2011 by Jason Gray

Well, maybe not quite, but I did use copper to tone these. This is a short series (meaning these may be it; let me know what you think) in which I attempted to reduce real birds to 2D “cutouts”. I have been playing with the illusion of the real lately, in my photography, and I think that these are a good example of that.

Sexual Assault Can Lead to Liver Damage

Tityus was the Greek mythological character who was put to death for assaulting a daughter of Zeus and sentenced to be eternally chained in the great pit of Tartarus, a greek version of hell, while his liver (thought to hold passionate emotion, ie, anger) was gnawed at by vultures and snakes. This story of eternal struggle and retribution is similar to the Prometheus myth and in ways to the narrative of Sisyphus. Titian apparently loved this line of metaphor; he made paintings of all of these subjects. Last year I made a monotype based on his Sisyphus.

I see existential analogies between ancient myth and the contemporary human condition and have always been intrigued by the dark gothic drama of baroque allegorical art. Here I’ve taken multiple images from allegorical paintings and overlapped them, searching for some kind of combination of grace, jaggedness and abstracted puzzlement.

As with any just completed piece I post, I’m still pondering adjustments.

Considering the connection to sclerosis and retribution, I’ve invented a new drink,  The Bin Laden:  2 shots and a splash of water.               (apologies to the ultra sensitive)

Thanks, I’ll be here all week. Enjoy the veal.

For Laelia

Posted in Art, Collage, Toni Tiller with tags , , , on May 4, 2011 by Toni Tiller

A few weeks ago @laeliamitchell sent me a pretty little handmade art book and so now it is my turn to return the favor. Kind of wish I had a better picture but this will have to do for now.

Jazz Portraits

Posted in Art, Collage, Drawing, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 3, 2011 by jdhastings

I forgot to upload the piece I was going to post today, so I’ll put up some random jazz portraits I’ve made in the past. I may have posted some of these before. When in doubt about what subject to represent (when I bother with representation) I tend to drift towards portraits of Jazz musicians because of my passion for their artform. It’s not deep, and often the portraits don’t convey the essence of what I love about their art, but it’s something to use as I explore ways of representing things.

I’m currently working on a piece incorporating portraits of Coltrane and Miles in them, so in a way this is still relevant.

monster painting

This is one of the pieces I did for the Meth & Hot Dogs 2 show at Lift designer toys and gallery in Royal Oak, Michigan, which is near Detroit. It opened on Saturday and from the photos it looks like a great show with a fun opening.

Form a Line Please, 11″ x 30″, 2011

This is a little more straight forward then I plan on working on in the immediate future, but I like it. I just bought a bunch of canvas and stretchers, and after a craft fair coming up in may I plan on concentrating on painting more. Til then, its sew, sew, sew, monsters, monsters, monsters, with maybe a little sketching in between.

Online Exhibition

Posted in Art on May 1, 2011 by Jason Gray

Saint Louis Community College at Forest Park’s Photo Club has sponsored this online exhibition featuring work by students from its Photography Program (where I have been getting all of my recent black and white lab time).

Aside:
If you live in the area, and are thinking about going to/back to school for photography, or if you are a film enthusiast and need some extensive time in a fully equipped black/white lab, you should be considering STLCC at Forest Park. The program is headed by local artist Jamie Kreher, and offers a truly first-rate education (I am comparing it to my experiences in the art departments of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago). For information on the program or to enroll go to the school’s website, here.
