More Graph Paper Designs

Posted in Art, Drawing, J. D. Hastings with tags , , , , , on May 31, 2011 by jdhastings

If I didn’t have to work for a living I’d get a lot more art done. And read more books. In fact the world as a whole would be a better place.

I came tantalizing close to finishing something to post this weekend but got caught by the buzzer. Instead, here are some designs I scribbled while teaching myself some of the art of tessellation.

Saturday Morning Cartoons: A Purge Of Dissidents

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , on May 28, 2011 by ssstephg

Found this via the Melvins on Facebook. It’s the first in a series.

From Amphetamine Reptile Record’s Youtube channel:

Amphetamine Reptile’s ART Division (OX-OP), teamed up with artist DALEK and HAZE XXL to do a bizarre project called A Purge Of Dissidents (2007). Weirdo space monkey animations by DALEK soundtracked by HAZE XXL. Several Melvins accompany him on this track.. The finished project was released as a BOOK/CD/DVD. It’s still available on Ipecac.

On The Fence: About Sculpture

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , on May 21, 2011 by ssstephg

Well, it’s the sculpture that’s on the fence. I’m not on the fence about the sculpture. I like it quite alot. I like it so much it’s even on my fence. It’s not my sculpture though, as in, I didn’t make it. The artist is Mark Bodah.
Shown here among various overgrown weeds, this sculpture is made from cheesecloth, wax, sticks and wire. It’s about six feet long and has been hanging on our fence for close to a year. I’m pleasantly surprised by it’s weather resistance. Perhaps a fence made from the same materials is in order. I’m going to give it some serious consideration.

Monotypes from Life, Indirectly

Posted in Art, art on paper, Drawing, figurative, gesture drawing, monotype, nude, printmaking, technique, Tom Bennett, work on paper with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on May 19, 2011 by Tom Bennett

To be clear, if one is making a monotype from life, working from a an inanimate subject like a still life doesn’t pose many problems. working from a live landscape is more challenging in that one requires a press(if one is using a press) to be nearby, and working from the live model is only problematic if the model becomes uncomfortable since the process can be a stop and start, dragged out thing. The monotypes below were made from life “once removed”, in that I drew the model in a sketchbook first and then created the monos from the drawings.

Early Collage

I am stuck in bed under a haze of cold medicine, so I’m gonna phone this one in, it’s back from our early ATC rampage and it is called Angels With Commitment Issues. Maybe there will be more later, I don’t know, I’ll let the Nyquil decide.

Spring felt like summer for a while this week so I spent some time ornamenting the concrete out in front of ye olde homestead.

COLOR.

Posted in Art with tags on May 13, 2011 by Jason Gray

After several months spent in a darkroom, laboring over the tonality of various black and white prints, it almost feels weird just writing it, c-o-l-o-r. Recently, I picked up my digital cameras at length for the first time in quite a long time, and I have to admit, all of that vibrance at my fingertips felt pretty liberating. Nonetheless, most of the images on this post are concerned with geometry; something that I have been relying heavily on in my black and white work.

All Nikon D50 or D300 with Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, or Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G lenses.

Work in Progress Painting

Posted in Art, figurative, nude, oil painting, Painting, Tom Bennett with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 12, 2011 by Tom Bennett

Work in progress, another in  the series “Old Ruling Class”.

The support is a cradled masonite board treated with a white clay ground, which produces a nice balanced surface that is both a resist and absorbing platform which allows me to do reductive mark-making with tools such as a razor blade, which is a technique my father, Harry, used to great effect in a number of projects such as his Divine Comedy series.

Harry celebrates his 92nd birthday this weekend. Happy Birthday, Dad!

Buried Treasures

Posted in Art, Toni Tiller with tags , , , on May 11, 2011 by Toni Tiller

I think I may have mentioned that twice a year I serve as the chairman of the art department for Minks To Sinks, a local charity tag sale of enormous proportions. It’s so popular that people start lining up hours in advance on opening day, and the line stretches around the block (not an easy feat since we don’t even have blocks in Wilton), and when the gates open there is stampede of people behaving more like wild bulls. I have yet to see any of these excited shoppers head straight to the art tent, which is a shame because I happen to know there are some real goodies in there. Here are some highlights, two of the best, and a few best of the worst.

This was one of the nicer pieces, an original brush painting by James Yeh-Jau Liu.

The back plate.

Here is another one of my favorites, an early William Matthews print.

I liked them both, but the aren’t nearly as fun as these two vintage paint by number boxers.

I was tempted to grab this one myself for my collection of hideous paintings of children, but ultimately I resisted.

I am sure some hipster snapped this baby right up – with a bonus sneak peek at my fab leopard print rain slicker in the reflection!

That’s all for now, October will bring the next round of treats from the tents, see you then!

Of the batch of dropcloths I recently finished, this may be my favorite. I don’t have much more analysis to provide.

Saturday Morning Cartoons: Story Corps, No More Questions!

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , on May 7, 2011 by ssstephg

I love this animation!  The dialog is from a Story Corps interview with 87 year old spitfire Kay Wang and her son and grand-daughter.  Kay is none too happy about answering her family’s questions, but her answers are very entertaining.  She passed away just weeks after the interview and her family returned to record some of their thoughts which are also included.  It’s funny and very sweet.
