I didn’t really have anything new to post this week until I remembered this. Here is the image I submitted to the latest edition of Brown Mega Corp. arts newsletter.

Well here it is.

acrylic and mixed media on 3/4 inch board
17 x 10 inches
and it measures about 3 inches at the deepest part
I had a bitch of a time getting a decent photo of it. This was the best I could do. It’s not quite accurate in terms of color and value, and I think it’s a little hard to read spatially. There are lots of thick, glossy transparent layers–hard stuff to photograph. I’ll add detail shots after the jump to give a better idea what it looks like in real life. Reproduction issues aside, this is representative of the direction I’m heading in now. Any and all comments welcome and appreciated, even hating. Read more »

Posted in 35mm, abstract, art school, Jason Gray with tags 35mm, Black and White, Jason Gray on March 4, 2011 by Jason GrayAs promised, here is the first round of work that I have been producing on 35mm, black and white film. Last January, I enrolled in courses at the St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, which gave me access to a great, black and white film lab. Since then, I have been working on a group of pictures that centers around a wooded area in Forest Park (the urban park of St. Louis). I have made a few exceptions to that, as you will see. Enjoy.
All Nikon N80 or N8008s with Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D or Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G lenses.

Getting Back Into The Snip Of Things
Posted in Art, Toni Tiller with tags Art, Collage, cutting, paper, Toni Tiller on March 2, 2011 by Toni TillerAfter working out my glue issues last week I immediately hit a wall, struggling with my composition and thinking that maybe this whole thing was just a bad idea. Or maybe it wasn’t the idea what was bad, maybe it was the approach, so as is the current custom I threw my angst out to Twitter and got a speedy reply from JD Hastings, who suggested I do the thing I think I shouldn’t, especially if it makes me laugh. Well I wasn’t anywhere close to laughing, I didn’t know what I should do much less what I shouldn’t do so the next best thing was to just do the opposite of what was being done. Instead of gray scale geometric shapes maybe loose loopy color would work. At the very least it would be way more fun to cut out, and that is the best part so even though I have no more idea where these are going at least they are a lot mote enjoyable to make.
Then they got more intricate, the Spirograph set came out, and things got even more enjoyable, the only down side being there are now four million little loose scraps of paper in my bed that stick to my legs when I am sleeping. Everything has a price.
Book Filler
Posted in Art, Collage, craft, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags Art, Collage, J. D. Hastings, Painting, quilting, sewing on March 1, 2011 by jdhastingsIf you saw my post last week, I created a blank book as a test of book making methods. It is the exception to the rule of judging a book by its cover, since that was all I really was trying to create.
In order to fill the book, I’m going to try to send it to people to trick them into filling it for me. In order to convince them to do so, though, I figured I should add a few pages myself, so I make a couple very different quilts for the cause:
This is the first page. I think it’s very welcoming.
This is a play on my tendency to get into arguments on the internet. I even got into a minro altercation regarding my omission of an apostrophe. The background is made of quilted paintings, the words are made of arty gallery mailers moutned on canvas.
For my next trick, I made my first ever fabric quilt, with 2 sides and binding.
Technically it’s awful (note the corners of the shapes don’t line up and I had no idea what I was doing with the binding), but it’s my first try, so get over it.
