Snow Day!

Posted in Art, landscape, monotype, printmaking, Toni Tiller with tags , , , on January 12, 2011 by Toni Tiller

It started snowing last night, and kept snowing, and snowing, and…yeah you get the idea. We are currently buried under two and a half feet, which I really don’t mind. My yard instantly looks a lot cleaner, and the sculptures take on a new dimension. This is the one behind my bedroom, just to give you an idea of perspective this thing stands at about 8 feet.

Looks pretty with all the snow on it, doesn’t it?

I also took the opportunity to use the new space I mentioned last week. Taking a step back from the abstracts, I thought I’d try another landscape based on an image by sculptor Molly Sanger Carpenter. I lost familiarity with using the inks this way so I think I will be taking a few more stabs at this image, as well as also printing multiple layers on the same image.

Nope

My sewing machine died this week. Apparently it had been stored in a cold wet garage prior to my getting it. I took it to the vet and they put it down. But I traded in it’s corpse for a new one Saturday, then put this together to try it out.

“Nope” 24″ x 24″ Acrylic and Canvas, Quilted

If this looks a lot like last week’s quilt, it’s because it was made with many of the same component pieces. However, this one took a lot more work to make. The pieces are smaller and I tried a lot of new things, like building sheets of small scraps to build into sheets I could cut into patterns. And obviously letters and, minimally, working text into my work. I’ve been told to be more conceptual. I still have more to learn, there are some ripples, but I’m moving forward and that’s all that really interests me.

These color schemes kind of annoy me. I may change direction on that front soon.

WIP: Flaming Pink Hole

AaaaaaaaaaaandNo, this has nothing to do with goatse.
painting diptych WIP
Yes, that’s a hole through the center of the top part.  It’s a diptych at this stage, acrylic on cradled panels. And it stands about 40 or a little more inches tall altogether. It may turn out to be two separate pieces. It will look much different in the end. But that’s half the fun of WIPs, right? I guess.

Sapphic Traffic

I’ve got to tell you, this post is hardly going to be edited nor proof read; I just am too tired. I was at MOMA  today, looking at abstract expressionist work and 20th century drawing and architecture and was thinking about intent and personal expression. Making art is an exercise spent in a huge vast tent filled with noisy, quiet , intellectual, emotional individual endeavor. But at the end of the day, week , year, life, I find myself drawn over and over to the substance, the surface of PAINT. I respond to the manipulation of it  and the texture of it. I am about a conversation that concerns both the art and the evidence of process. I embrace the emotion, the mess.

Here is a monotype thats about pushing the ink and paint around in a concerted , organized and mildly erotic but intuitive fashion.

Frank Stella

Posted in Art, Interview, Toni Tiller, video with tags , , , , , on January 5, 2011 by Toni Tiller

Yesterday was great. I spent the day building my own indoor studio in the room that was up until recently occupied by a giant breathing bottle of tequila, which sounds preposterous but I swear it is true. It took all day, and in the process I had to make a much bigger mess, but at the end of the day there was a huge, completely functional space. Initially the intention was to make the space and then make some art to post for today, but at 10:30 pm I realized it wasn’t going to happen, so I’m going to post this cool interview from Frank Stella instead.

Back on the Horse

I made this this weekend as an exercise to remind myself how to make art after being too busy or otherwise occupied for the last few months.

I haven’t even had time to stretch this. It’s a quilt of a bunch of paintings I made for other things.

still making monsters

Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital, Illustration with tags , , , on January 3, 2011 by Daniel Allyn Lee

Hi, I haven’t posted much lately. I’m a bad blogger. I was pretty busy over the holidays making stuff for people. I’m still getting some holiday related projects wrapped up. I definitely made a new years resolution to make more art.
This is a digital collage that I never got finished. Then, looking through some sketches these monsters seemed to fit. So, I put them together.

Happy twenty eleven! This year I’m thinking, let’s keep things random for a bit. With that in mind, here’s a minute plus of nothing much.

SPOILER: The wizard gets it in the end.

Today I Need This: Rocket One String Guitar

1-string rocket guitar by Celentano Woodworks on Etsy
because even though I’m musically retarded it’s still fun to pretend. And this is just about the coolest, cutest thing I’ve seen in forever! It was either this one or the cupcake ukulele, but I figure in my case, the less strings the better. Get your own handmade instrument at Celentano Woodworks shop on Etsy.
And if you do, be sure to send us a video of you serenading us all here at d’Arteboard so we can post it for all to see.
