It’s Been Awhile

Posted in abstract, Art, Photography, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , , on December 8, 2010 by Toni Tiller

I haven’t done one of these subway abstracts in quite awhile, mostly due to the fact that I rarely take the subway any more. Last week my boss called me into the office and I found myself back on the G line, my old home away from home. I was sorry to see that in the last year the city has finally taken an interest in the G and there were very few dilapidated billboards where there used to be plenty. I went home with a grand total of 5 images, none of which I was overly in love with while shooting, but in uploading I found this friendly face.

I like him alright, but in the process of looking at the images I realized I had lost connection with whatever process I used to use to make these. I felt a little rusty, so this may not be my best, but it felt like good exercise.

I’ve been trying my hardest to get new items in my etsy store for the holiday season. I finally put some paintings up that I had been meaning to for a while.

OK no flames yet unless you count the sun, but above is some pretty grass and the fire pit construction continues. Here are a couple of progress shots. I’ve done a bit more work since the last photo. Hey look, I match my shed.

New Series

Honeymoon 3; Oil on Canvas; 24″ x 36″

I am too tired tonight to introduce this series the way that I should.  It has to do with memory, and I will leave it at that (more to come later).  This week/month has been/will be a really challenging one, workwise.  On the upside, I did get to spend a morning with Richard Diebenkorn’s son-in-law photographing Richard Diebenkorns for the upcoming catalogue raisonné.  Pretty exciting!!

Anyway, more on my series later on…

One Must Make Sacrifices…

This piece could be a comment on the current state of the world economy and its effects. Or a statement on the wrath of scorned women. Maybe just the fact that the old testament is one bloody violent book.
Suggested by Carravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes.

Privacy Is Dead Because Me And James Gilbert Said So

This is late. The contract for this stated that it was due five days after accepting, but it also didn’t list any penalty for not making the deadline so…yeah, here it is, late. The thing is that I actually had the image ready on time, but then got a whole heaping pile of writer’s block to go with it.

Originally I was going to write about the #thesocialgraph, a show based around social networking, and one that while walking through I realized I had connections to half the artists participating through social media. The show was fun, I am a big advocate for social media, and I had demonstrable connections to the show, so I figured this would be easy to write about right? No.

The more I thought about it, the more abstract my thoughts on the subject got, until I didn’t know what I wanted to say, and ultimately came to the conclusion that I had nothing to say. There is nothing linear about how I perceive the relationship between social media and networking and art, it’s substantial, it’s there, but when I go to grab it my hand passes right through. Maybe I just need to think about it more.
