Straight Sketchbook, Homie

Posted in Art, Drawing with tags , , on November 30, 2010 by jdhastings

I’ll probably be at work 11-12 hours today so the time I’m spending on this will just keep me here longer. I may be plumbing the random depths of my Flickr feed for stuff to post the next few weeks. But that’s why I don’t delete the random crap in my twitter feed.

2005Brains

This is an underground room full of brains in tanks. They control robots outside to prevent bodily risk. I drew this years before Surrogates sucked the life out of the idea, thanks.

5_06_Lava Flow

The initial sketches for pieces I’ve posted on here before. Could I find and link to that piece? Yes. But I won’t.

This is the sketch for a piece I’ve been working on for 3 years and will probably never finish.

“November Is A Nice Day For Ice Cream”
by StephG

It’s been a while since I posted a sidewalk doodle. I’ve been busy with things and stuff and haven’t felt much like drawing on the walk. But the other morning the urge hit me. The concrete was wet and the sky was grey and misty. Perfect? Well no, but whatever. I felt like it.

Happy Sunday!

Today I need This: Swarovski Encrusted Sailfish

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on November 27, 2010 by ssstephg

made by Kevin McHugh and available for sale in his wonderful Etsy shop. It’s really beyond fabulous, and I want it with every fiber of my sparkle-obsessed being! Plus, it would be the perfect focal point for my freshly painted dining room. But in blue or pink? Blue or pink?

If only I had an extra five grand!
Wall mounted fiberglass base. Over 12,500 hand-applied crystals. Crystal colors: crystal/crystal metallic blue/ jet black/aquamarine aurora borealis with blue glass eye.
53″ x 30″

This one’s eight K, but it’s enormous!
Wall mounted fiberglass base. Over 12,500 hand-applied crystals. Crystal colors: dark pink/light pink/crystal crystal aurora borealis with blue glass eye.
78” x 53”

Yes yes gorgeous materialistic want blablahblah, but I should also mention that the artist began making these spectacular fish to draw attention to their dwindling population. From his bio:

“The more I researched these fish and other billfish like Marlin, the more I wanted to showcase them, and bring attention to their plight of being overfished and possibly brought to the verge of extinction”

Dear Santa,
I can be naughty AND I can be nice.
Bring me this sailfish or I’ll have you iced.
Love,
-Steph

How to be a Successful Photographer Artist

Posted in Art, Jason Gray with tags , , on November 26, 2010 by Jason Gray

Not much to show for this week, except for two cats that have shown a bit of improvement, healthwise. Next week though, I might have two paintings to show from the new series that I am working on dealing with memory. Stay tuned.

By the way, Digital Rev TV (shown above) posts the most entertaining photography-stuff “reviews” around. You can check out their YouTube Channel here

Happy Thanksgiving! Turbacon Fer Dinner?

For the record, I gagged through most of this, and I almost cried when they got to the pig part. Really. But I know there’s alotta bacon love out there. This is for all you mammal eaters who heart the pigmeat with such zeal!

Happy Eatin Day!

Painting in Tongues

I’m interested in how the viewer digests, distills, deconstructs and then reconstructs a piece of art. The visual language an artist uses must rely on the understanding of that language by the viewer in order for the work to to be interpreted as art.
The first is a representational portrait of fellow blogger Toni Tiller, the second is an unfinished version, a work in progress with the intent of abstraction. The first uses marks that signify and symbolize very specific ideas, whereas the second uses a language that speaks more about material first and objective form second. What perception and perspective the audience carries in response to each piece is significant.

Group of Sketches

Sketch Group

Various sizes. Each is around 14-16″ wide. Acrylic and Watercolor on Canvas with Safety Pins.

I started making these a few years ago to use up some material and maybe showcase some of the techniques I’d been developing in very simplified form. Each one isn’t much on its own, but the hope was that in concert they’d become more than the sum of their parts. Here’s some details:

That’s what I’ve been doing. I’m making a fire pit! I spent the week digging the hole and removing the sod. Today, we laid out the landscaping fabric and started laying stones on the patio. Here’s what it looked like this morning.

and a proper soundtrack…

Love & Flames,

In Absentia

Posted in Jason Gray with tags on November 19, 2010 by Jason Gray

I know that I have been away, but I have two sick cats, and well, haven’t really been feeling much like sharing anything. Bella and Percy both have chronic kidney failure, which has been a fairly traumatic event at my household. I know that sick kitties might not seem like a big deal to everyone, but if you’ve ever had cats, then you understand.

Above is Bella, below is Percy.

Disturbing

Posted in Art, art on paper, Drawing, figurative, homage, mixed media, Tom Bennett, work on paper with tags , , , , , , , , on November 18, 2010 by Tom Bennett

Someone recently suggested these were disturbing in a Tracey Emin kind of a way. Peculiar. That is scary. I don’t know.
These may have some autobiographical connections. The first is loosely based on a Van Dyke.

Another Not-So-Great Photo

Posted in abstract, Art, monotype, printmaking, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on November 17, 2010 by Toni Tiller

It’s OK to admit that right?

I have no idea what is going on but every time I try to photograph these things something goes wrong. I can correct some of it in photoshop of course, but it never quite gets there, you know? It’s easier when I do pieces that are really bold and graphic, but as soon as I start making things that are softer, or more subtle a lot seems to get lost in translation. I’m still going to make things like that, but I guess I am just going to have to accept that they might not ever look that great on the internet. Maybe I should try something different like scanning them? If anyone has any advice on this please feel free to share it.

moonman

I decided to try to employ some of my digital collage techniques to an illustration. I should have done this before. I think it turned out pretty nice. Definitely, something I will explore and play with.

This is a little digital sketch I made by screwing around in Photoshop with a scan of a pretty autumn leaf. It ain’t Hokusai but whatever. I think it’s kinda pretty. I think YOU”RE kinda pretty!

That’s all I have to say.

Here, this one scrolls through a bunch of Hokusai works to the tune of some lovely Chinese music. *shrugs* Wakarimasen.

Hermit

Hermits are weirdos and kinda fun to think about. I’ve been living like one on and off for the last few weeks, that is, when I’m not being excessively extroverted. When I’m working, painting, designing, or illustrating – I’m in my hermit head.

These are two one-off prints inspired by a typically odd Rubens: “Hermit and Angelica.” The symbolism and allegory in the original is ripe with sex, potential violence and redemption. In my versions the hermit is such a cypher he’s really not there at all.

I’m Back

And look, I brought you this badly photographed piece of art I made!

I really like this piece so I should have done a better job presenting it but that would have required an iron, and effort, and I’m just not quite there yet. Next week, I promise(ish).

You’ll Just Have To Trust Me That I’m Going Somewhere With This

Posted in Art, Drawing with tags , , on November 9, 2010 by jdhastings

Really.  These are part of a work in progress.  The series may or may not expand.  These will become some form of collages.  Many decisions left to be made.  Yes they are rough.
