New Painting: Translating Leaf to Pixels

I don’t think the metallic leaf translates well in these tiny digital images. All that stuff that looks white is really silver. Meh, what can ya do?  Hire a photographer I guess, but that’s getting a little fancy for my blood.

i forget the size–about 16 x 24 maybe?

I’ve decided to go horizontal at this point. You may remember I was on the fence about orientation when it was still in progress. It works nicely that way in real life. The high contrast of the broken silver leaf against the warm textured background almost reads as rusted metal and the circular forms running across the middle make this weirdly fun shifty movement happen when the painting is laid on it’s side. It’s more static when left a vertical.
Detail photos after the jump!

This one will prolly be included in an upcoming show I’m having. More details on that soon!

Okey Dokey,

Nice one Stephanie. And I don’t think a pro photographer will be able to improve on yours. Metal leaf (gold or silver) is notoriously difficult to capture in a stiff snap. Since it is interective and changing with the viewer’s movement, it’s all a matrer of … “ya gotta be there”!

    • thanks, Ann. that’s good to hear. i’m unsure of how so much of what happens in my work actually comes across through a photo–particular tactile qualities, subtle color shifts, transparent layers, textured surfaces. that’s why i always include detail shots. i figure it supplies integral clues.

I meant still snap …not “stiff” snap… but I haven’t had my quota of caffeine
