Nested Flowers

Many thanks to fellow member, Jason for sending me some photo suggestions this weekend. The settings helped a lot and I have updated the pictures from last week’s quilting project.

This week I’m finally posting something that formed the basis of this post and this post. Those were both sketches to teach me how to make this or to help me visualize a color scheme that is something of a departure for me.

3 Layer Flower
“3 Layer Flower” 24″ x 24″ Acrylic on Canvas with Safety-Pins

What’s new about this is it had the basic form as this piece but manages to nest the shape within itself. Honestly, I wasn’t as happy with the final result as I hoped I’d be, and have still considered adding some purple higlights into the fields of blue, but I did accomplish the basic goal I set out to do. In the future I can now nest several more layers in similar fashion. In theory.

This is actually the first drawing I did for this daily drawing project that I started last week, but I just got around to inking it the other day. I ordered some new pens and I think they are helping me remember to vary my line weight.

Guh! I dunno. Silly Beardo!

Posted in Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on July 10, 2010 by ssstephg

I’ve been stuck, yes literally stuck what with the humidity, to this chair all week so I haven’t been able to paint.  Instead, because it’s been within arms reach (and well, what material could be more appropriate in this sweltering heat?), I’ve been making things with felt. Silly little pins like these, and um, I made some beards…

Yeah, these are totally inspired by Erin’s awesome work at imadeyouabeard. And yeah, this is KPAO! related stuff.

I like the unshorn look. I mean I really like it.  I’m seriously attracted to a good beard.  Yes, a nice chin curtain is hard to resist.  It’ll be practical once winter rolls around again, too.

Grass

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , on July 9, 2010 by Jason Gray

I don’t know if insanity is a symptom of heat-stroke, but I was baking in the hot sun the other day, while waiting for a ride, and I became suddenly very interested in the grass. So naturally, I started taking pictures. I won’t bore you with all of them, but I do kind of like this one.

Also, I have uploaded a bunch of writing on photography, how-to’s and these-are’s mostly, over on my personal blog, so go check those out if you are intrigued. Oh, and J.D., I have looked through your picture settings and I have some suggestions that I believe will help you; I will be emailing those to you tomorrow.

I Just Feel Like Sharing This

When I was out in California I saw William Kentridge’s Magic Flute video installation. I usually don’t have the patience for video work but it was mesmerizing, and soothing to my Stendhal Syndrome tummy. I thought about posting it here but since an integral part of the piece is the 3D structure it’s housed in it doesn’t seem to translate effectively for the internet. I found this piece instead, Wanting…And Weighing (1997), I hope you like it.

Grind

Due to the grind of a daily schedule, I haven’t been able to create new work over the last couple of weeks outside of sketchbook drawing. These folks feel the grind as well.

Two Views (Again)

Posted in Art, landscape, monotype, printmaking, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on July 7, 2010 by Toni Tiller

As I attempted to discuss two weeks ago part of what I have been exploring with this process is working the same plate twice. Mostly it’s just because it gives me a chance to continue to figure out how to manipulate the materials. If I put the ink down this way this is what happens and if I go back and do it another way I get to see what happens when I do that. It’s a slow process of trying to get a command over some pretty lo-fi technology, but it’s also fun and I’m actually wondering what would happen if I did the whole thing even more low tech and use a rolling pin or something. Maybe I’ll run over my plates with my car, I don’t know, but I like how a simple change in viscosity here can produce two very different moods in the same visual structure.

So It Finally Comes To This

*UPDATE* New photograph uploaded.

Last week fellow d’Arte boardist Toni Tiller was in town and taught me some basic tips on how to use a heavy duty sewing machine my friend Sam had given me.

Quilt1
“4 Quilts” Acrylic on canvas, quilted 24″ x 24″

Yesterday morning I started with a drawer of unused scraps of former paintings and managed to make four 12″ x 12″ “quilts” that I then bound together. All in a day, which is kind of shocking compared to how long things usually take.

Unfortunately, I still need someone to show me how to photograph things better. No matter how much I tried to color correct this it still has too much contrast. The whole piece is much more muted and soft in person.

Obviously I have much to learn and allowed myself to make a lot of mistakes I was aware of as I was making them, but the exercise was to get myself repetitions so I became familiar with the machine. Next I’ll take on better planned out designs, curves and such, and slowly build up my competence. Meanwhile I’ll be able to use these techniques with the painting, safety-pinning, collage and wood work I already use in my work.

All in all I’m excited to see where this goes. I’ll post a detail shot after the jump, though it is similarly hampered by poor photography skills (and the fact that I only had a half hour to photo it before having to go to bed).

drawing a day

Posted in Art, Daniel Allyn Lee, Drawing, Illustration with tags , , , on July 5, 2010 by Daniel Allyn Lee

In an effort to become better at illustration I’ve decided to commit to making at least one drawing a day for the next year or more. If I get stuck on what to draw, I’ll randomly select a word from the dictionary.  I plan on posting my favorite drawing once a week online.
for this drawing the word was ‘eleventh’.

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles: Buzz Melvin, Peter Pan & Daffy Duck

Posted in Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , on July 4, 2010 by ssstephg

I’ve mentioned the whole KPAO! thing here before. This week’s sidewalk doodle comes courtesy of a KPAO! outing in the park where our August fete is to be held. We normally draw on the sidewalk outside mi casa, but for a change, one evening early this week, the posse sauntered over to Kennedy Park and covered the concrete with chalk. This one was a collaboration between myself, Bodart and our friend Ida. Daffy in the upper right was drawn by Sir Edwin.

Oh yeah, did you hear? The Melvins finally hit the charts! I love The Melvins.

Acrylic TadpolesWaterfallLeafed Abstract Finish

It’s done. Whaddaya think?

acrylic and composition gold leaf on panel
24 x 24 x 2 inches

This one was fun to make. Aside from the actual painting being enjoyable, I got a big kick out of hearing what specific imagery people extracted from the nonobjective forms, textures and colors. Sometimes, when that happens with nonrepresentational work, I really want to scream, “IT”S JUST PAINT!” and then borrow Daniel’s exploding cotton candy cart and blow the literal bastards up. This time, not at all. I dunno why. Maybe my somewhat abrasive, tightly wound self is beginning to soften and unwind. Maybe I’m just tired. Generally, I spend the bulk of my days in the company of nearly silent feline friends who seem to have a deep understanding of the abstract.  I make nonobjective art and they offer scant commentary on things like composition, color relationships and paint handling.  But things have changed a might at the homestead, and there were many studio visitors while this was in progress. In the post title, I mention some of the things people saw in this one while I was working on it. If anyone wants to test my endurance for matrixing by offering up their own interpretation of this one in the comments, I’m totally up for hearing what you see.

I’ll include a buttload of progress photos after the jump cuz it’s fun to see that sorta thing, right? Well, I like it anyway. Read more »

Dog Days

Not a lot to update. This was my first week at the new job, and it is fun, but a lot of work. This shot is similar to one I posted about a year ago, but different. wOOF.

Our own Steph Girolimatos wants to ride around Holyoke, Mass with her man Mark and me on the handlebars while I draw them. I have a feeling it’ll be vastly more comfortable and smoother than the NYC subway.
